He was determined to cast a trans actress in Banana and nearly gave up until he found Bethany Black. Casting her made history as the first trans actress cast as a trans character in a UK drama. He kept in touch, and has remained a mentor, friend and script doctor to her ever since. That's what sort of man he is.

@silvermarmoset It's the classic case of people being a thousand per cent harsher to someone who is a minority and pushing hard for representation, than white cishet men who have to be pushed and shoved into it or done the bare minimum. Like look how people tore shows like Sense8 apart or literally any kids cartoon lead by lgbt people like She Ra that tries to represent people, for being imperfect.

Even if he doesn't fuck up in the slightest they'll find something to try and discredit him, because after they've been driven bonkers by having to pretend that the last minute, stale crumbs they've been celebrating for years were good, they're going to be faced with a show that is actually doing the work like casting Yasmin Finney right out of the gate.
