“You’re good at that whole, breaking bad news thing.” He commented with a huff. He took a deep drag off the cigarette, offering it back to Lil as he let out a long breath and puff of smoke. “We could make it more interesting.” He cast her a sideways look. Lily wasn’t exactly as open to his–shenanigans as others were. But he thought this was a special circumstance.

“Thanks, Black,” she replied dryly. She took the cigarette back and took another drag off it before she shrugged. “What exactly do you have in mind?” She asked this cautiously, Sirius’ penchant for trouble often made his ideas too strange or dangerous to take part in.

James & Lily II Shadows In The Night

He had been deep in thought. Though very aware of his surroundings, his mind was going to worst case scenarios of the evening. Hopefully he could keep Lily safe if it came down to it. Though nothing had really happen in a while on these stakeouts. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if anything happened to Lily, he worried about her more than anyone else, which scared him. He was hoping that by keeping his feelings in check that he’d be able to think more professionally, but that never seemed to happen when he was with her. He’d still do whatever he could to protect the woman. He turned to see her approaching and a smile immediately formed, “Evening. Coffee?” he offered, holding out the spare coffee he was holding, in her general direction. 

She felt her grin widening when he smiled back at her, “Thanks.” She took the coffee from him carefully, taking a sip right away. She leaned against the car next to him, mentally reminding herself to keep space between them. She didn’t want to make things weird and as much as she wanted to reprise what they’d been working toward in school; it wasn’t a good time. “Looks like we’re in for a long night out here,” she remarked while she looked around at the empty street. “Not that that’s a bad thing,” she quickly added. A long night with no attacks was better than a short night of terror and worry by a long shot. “So we’re just going to hang out in this car and try not to look suspicious? That’s the plan?”

He released a heavy, dramatic sigh. “That is not what I was hoping you’d say.” He muttered, holding his hand out for the cigarette back. “This is crap. I feel useless standing around like a statue.” So he was a bit whiny. His last assignment had him moving, busy. Not standing about to guard a building there was only a chance the Death Eaters might target..

She smirked grimly and handed the cigarette back to him, “Hate to be the bearer of bad news.” Of course, she was also put out with the guarding job, she would have much rather been put into a field mission where they would actually be doing something. “Yeah, I believe we’re in for a long night.”

James & Lily II Shadows In The Night

James had been up for 28 hours give or take. Unable to get back to sleep after a particularly traumatic nightmare. He tried to get some sleep, knowing James was going to be doing a stakeout with Lily. Rumors of a target family some Death Eaters were to attack. James made sure to have people ready to help defend the family if it were true. And though he hated coffee, he brought some with him as he got to the place. One for Lily as well as he waited for her to get there. Unlike his old self, he was always early now. Afraid he be too late to help if needed. James brought the car and Lily was to meet him there. Sipping on his coffee as he tried to make out the homes in the darkness of the street. His eyes would adjust shortly, but for now, everything was a series of black blobs.

When dealing with the terror and uncertainty that came with the war, Lily had constantly been trying to make light of situations that were tense. This evening was no different. She was looking forward to spending time with James, it had been a long time since they’d had the chance to hang out. And though this was technically a job to prevent an ambush on the family, there was no promise that any death eaters would even show up. The idea of hanging out with James for the evening was just as nerve wracking as it was exciting, however. Of course, Lily still had feelings for James and she could see that causing tension between them. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to be with him; it was just that the timing wasn’t right for them. Either way, she apparated a street over and quickly pulled her hair into a ponytail while she neared the end of the street. She turned the corner, saw the car and him leaning against it with a coffee. “Evening,” She smiled as she approached.

It wasn’t often that he found himself paired with the redheaded witch his best friend fancied. Lately, Sirius had found himself on patrol with Gideon or he was off on his own in the best disguise he had. So being with Lily was something of a treat. While he liked to pretend the woman was a nuisance, he truly adored the witch and looked forward to the day she and James stopped being stupid prats and got together.

He took a long, deep drag from his cigarette and released the cloud of smoke into the chill air with a sigh. “I feel like we’ve been standing here for hours.” He admitted into the silence, offering the butt to the witch beside him. “Tell me I’m right and we’re nearly done here.” He had a feeling he was wrong, but a man could hope.

When given the chance to patrol with Sirius, Lily jumped at the chance. Somewhere along the way of school and their early days in the Order, Lily had grown fond of him and saw him as the brother that she’d never had. 

She took the cigarette from him and and took a drag. She chuckled when she breathed the smoke out, “Are you sure you want an answer to that?” It felt as though they’d been standing outside the particular house for ages, but according to her watch it had only been just over an hour and a half.

[takes a big drink of her alcohol before speaking, deciding to go with the easier of topics] Well, for starters, I ran into Mulciber yesterday.

[She raises her eyebrows] Really, did you hex the pants off him? I would have.

They were. Woah, did Lily Evans just give me some compliments? My charm really has won you over. There is always a glimmer of hope even when times are this tough. Depends on who you keep company with as well. Though, my subconscious wont stop thinking about what’s happening. Or what’s happened.

Oi! I can easily stop too if you’d like. No use in inflating your ego anymore than it already is. Of course there is, you just need to find it. Forgetting about what’s happening or what happened is rather impossible, but it’s also good to use those as reminders that life is too short and that we should still try to have fun once and a while.

I miss those tutoring sessions, actually. My biggest challenge was getting you to like me and making good marks. That was a good time.

They were quite fun, weren’t they? Well, with the Potter charm you seem to have it was bound to make me less angry toward you all the time. And you’re a smart bloke, so really it was a high point for you. Right now times can be good too if we can pretend it’s not all happening for a bit. It’s hard, but it’s sometimes a good way to keep your mind off all the bad; I can vouch for that.

[She throws herself into a chair at Lily’s table, food-less so she turns her attention to the wine.] Both matters are, neither are, i don’t know. Instead you should by telling me something good about your week. Or bad. Whichever.

[She nods] Right, well, the ministry gave me a spontaneous day off tomorrow. So there’s that. I’ll finally be able to just relax for a day potentially. Now you, good or bad.

I’ll let it stay that way, gladly. To be fair, I didn’t need that much help. I just wanted you to tutor me. To annoy you, but then I thought better of it.

Ah so now the truth comes out huh? But it’s good you thought better of it. In hindsight those tutoring sessions were what started our friendship, without those I probably would have kept seeing you as an arrogant bully until at least seventh.

I do like a challenge. -chuckles- I’ll try to never bring it up again. I surprised you? I did alright on my own, what did you think about me? Why was I so surprising?

I know you do. [She grins] And good, that part of my life ended four years ago and I’d like to keep it that way. I just expected you to piss around and not actually attempt to learn. I thought it was just another one of your tactics in annoying me.

I’m going to figure out all of your secrets, Lily Evans. If it’s the last thing I do. -grins- I know I’m no Severus, but I hold my own -chuckles- Everyone knows you’re brilliant though. It’s why I needed you as a tutor in fifth year.

I wish you luck with that James, it won’t be easy. Also ew, please don’t bring that up. Oh obviously, but sometimes people forget. You were a good student, I was very surprised about that.

Oh? What other reasons do you have, Lils? Could it be because I’m so devilishly handsome?-winks- You do have your hands full with us. But you’re the only one capable, it seems.

Besides you being a cheeky prat; those are for me to know, and for you to...attempt to find out. Can’t be giving away all of my secrets now can I? [she smirks] Handsome huh? If that’s what you’d call it, I guess. That’s also because I’m brilliant, didn’t you know?

-smiles- Hopefully it’s not the only reason you stick around. Though it would keep you busy, I assume. I can get pretty ridiculous.

Nah, I have my other reasons as well. But yes, you’re right; you can be quite a handful at times. But to be fair that comes with the Marauder territory. The lot of you are nuts.

Then lets hope we don’t have to. It is a bit creepy. And I have a lot of access to hair at the Cauldron. I can find someone good for the polyjuice if we need it.
