She shook her head and laughed slightly at Sirius’s condensation. Mary liked to think that she was above trying prove her alcohol tolerance when someone doubted it, so she fiddled with the glass that the waited placed in front of her, instead of drinking it. “Okay, then what were you talking about?”

“Ah,” his grin took over his features as she asked the question he was waiting to hear. “Why, my dear, the most genius idea I’ve had in ages. If you thought I was brilliant at school, just wait.”

Mary rolled her eyes but did as she was instructed and pulled up a chair to sit with Sirius. “What will knock me off my feet? The drink? Contrary to popular belief: I can hold my alcohol.”

He made a scoffing sound, patting her hand lightly at her declaration. “Of course you can, Darling.” He chuckled, motioning for the waiter to bring two more drinks over to the table.

“But I wasn’t talking about the alcohol.”

He shouldn’t have been surprised to find Sirius Black in a place like this. The small pub practically screamed it’s name. It was loud and incredibly rough around the edges, it’s chaotic character was part of the reason why Alex himself liked the place so much. At being told to have a seat Alex raised an amused brow.

“Would I really?”

“Oh, definitely.” He exaggerated his tone, as though having Mulciber join him would make his night that much better. His grin widened, showing more teeth. James called it his doggy-grin; it was like he was baring his teeth without a growl.

A playful grin spread over his features as he turned, eyes dark with mischief. It didn’t matter who had stumbled upon his corner. He was simply happy to be out for the night, planning his next bout of pranks with his best friends. 

“You’ll want to pull up a chair,” he claimed, grin widening as he saw who had found him. “This one will knock y’off your feet.”

I’m not as dumb as poor James looks, I swear. It’s all an act to make the pretty girls feel bad for me. Pity is one of the best ways to pick up women, you know? [he might be lying, but he’ll never tell] I’m always up for a lesson or three, Marls. Just say the word. [grins boldly, proud of himself]

James chuckled again very lightly, “Oh, I’ll admit it.” he teased again, throwing an arm around his shoulder. “You saved it for now? Worth the wait. Now let’s get out of here before it’s too late to do anything. Curfew is a bitch.” he noted.

“There you go! Wasn’t so hard, now, was it?” He grinned then nodded at his friend’s suggestion. “Right you are, Prongsy. Let’s get gone, and deal with the curfew when it comes.” Not that he had any intention of obeying it. He rarely did, unless he thought he might actually get caught. But he’d let James think he was behaving-- at least for a little while.

She smirked grimly and handed the cigarette back to him, “Hate to be the bearer of bad news.” Of course, she was also put out with the guarding job, she would have much rather been put into a field mission where they would actually be doing something. “Yeah, I believe we’re in for a long night.”

“You’re good at that whole, breaking bad news thing.” He commented with a huff. He took a deep drag off the cigarette, offering it back to Lil as he let out a long breath and puff of smoke. “We could make it more interesting.” He cast her a sideways look. Lily wasn’t exactly as open to his--shenanigans as others were. But he thought this was a special circumstance.

“Yeah, well, it clearly isn’t enough,” she said, gesturing at the man in front of them before she was standing on her feet and wiping her hands against her pants, ignoring the fact that for a few seconds there when the blood wouldn’t rub off she could tell that they were trembling. “Some of the Healers in training’ll be here to pick him up soon, I’d better –” Emme started, her throat catching for a second before she was clearing her throat and shaking her head softly. “If you want to help, I guarantee that we could use more hands out there… they didn’t leave us a pretty mess to clean up.”

And it was true. They could always use more hands, the more the merrier and the more people that were willing to help out with at least this little portion of things there would be less bodies to bury and less people to stand in front of and explain to them that someone they loved was dead. The Death Eaters weren’t chaos, because that would be so much easier but they were organized and they hit hard and weren’t apt to taking people with them. On more than one occasion she felt her blood run cold at the thought of just who might be behind all of this or who might be behind the masks that they wore. 

But mostly, these days, Emmeline was left carrying the weight on her shoulders and she wasn’t terribly keen on sharing those kind of stories with anyone, least of all Dorcas. Quiet was key and silence was impossibility, not when she was more than aware of the fact that the people underneath those masks were likely the same people that she had shared life with, and some of which she still did. “It… you okay?” Emme asked softly, looking back over at Sirius for the first time and letting her eyes skim across his face before biting down on her lip.

He watched her in silence, letting her say what she felt needed to be said. He worked to keep his quick tongue under control and not anger her. She was being open and honest about something that really wasn’t discussed a lot among people. Most everyone preferred to keep these conversations in more private settings, which led to a lot of assumptions and quarrels. As she finished, he nodded. “All right. Just direct me where you want me to go.” He offered quietly. Though, to be entirely honest, he wanted to stay close to her at this point. He suddenly felt a need to watch over her, make sure she was safe.

Using the back of his wrist-- the only part of his hands free of dried blood at the moment-- to wipe away sweat on his forehead. A quick glance over the area told him that more people had arrived on the scene, but it was easily as chaotic then as it had been before. If not worse. There was little organization these days, even within the Order. Hell, the group had split to three because Dumbledore was gone and no one else had the sense to unite everyone under one cause. Because, really, no one could agree on anything. It seemed to be the same everywhere he went, and he wished it were the same for the opposite side. At least then, perhaps, there would be more chance for them to overcome the Darkness that seemed to be spreading entirely too quickly.

Her voice dragged his attention back, his brow furrowing as he tried to figure out what she’d said. Once it fully registered, the brows lifted in surprise and he nodded slowly. “Yeah, I’m-- as okay as anyone can be.” The admission was more than he offered most people. A joke, a light brush of the truth, anything but what he was really thinking or feeling was his norm. But given the situation and location, he just wasn’t in the mood to put up his usual front. This was no place to attempt humor, and even Sirius Black had the sense to recognize this.
