The Gopis plead with Krishna to return their clothing, folio from 'Isarda' Bhagatava Purana', by the so-called "Master of the 'Isarda' Bhagavata Purana", India, ca. 1560–65. MET (ID: 1972.260)
The Bhagavata Purana is one of Hinduism’s eighteen major Puranas and a central text of Vaishnavism, traditionally attributed to Vyasa. Written in Sanskrit, it emphasizes devotion (bhakti) to Vishnu while covering a wide range of subjects, including cosmology, mythology, genealogy, and cultural practices.
The work is divided into twelve books comprising 335 chapters and about 18,000 verses, with the tenth book—focused largely on Krishna—being the most popular. It has been widely translated and played an important role in introducing Hindu thought to Europe in the 18th century.
Philosophically, the text draws on Vedanta and Samkhya traditions, presenting a theology centered on devotion while incorporating elements of non-dualism, qualified non-dualism, and dualism as developed by thinkers like Adi Shankara, Ramanuja, and Madhvacharya.
