Every Mario Character Update #30 (WIP 1)

Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2 (FDS / NES, 1987 / 1988)

I realized that for the sake of this project, games with really big casts of debut characters are gonna take a lot longer to get posted even if I'm making decent progress, leaving the project radio silent for a while. So I'm going to start posting smaller updates for larger games until I finish them! Here's just a handful of the characters from SMB2 I've drawn so far. Once I finish the full game, I'll add them to the full collage and make a proper update post!

Where did she come from? Well, it's certainly none of my concern. She can toil over it all she likes, it just makes my job easier! GYAHHAHAH!!! Spending all day just scribbling whatever enters her line of sight, pointless creatures that coexist with her on that puny star. The Knight's nightmare, hrm? There's a joke in there somewhere, I'm sure. Talking about looking in mirrors, how cowardly do you have to be for your fear to be your own face! Is a thin piece of metal really doing you that much good? How embarrassing... What will you do when it really matters, Knight? Your world collapsing around you, your men falling at another's hand, and your favorite little mask in two pieces at your feet. Will you still flee? Will you still run away just to save you from yourself? GYAHHAHH!!! Get a grip, will you!!! I was hoping for a challenge in that little head of yours, I've heard such glowing reviews from my peers. Consider me disappointed.

Nightmare Wizard!

Finally! We arrive at the final boss of Kirby's Adv- uhh oh wait. Where's Nightmare? This is just the template image for the project, where did the art g-

GYAAAAAAHHAAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAHAAAAAAAGGHHH!!!!! Fiiiiiiiiiiinally... took long enough! Didn't you take a look at the date, Fool? Of all the days to toss me onto this stupid blog of yours, you picked the worst one! HAGH!!!! Figures. Y'know, the first time you drew my visage for this worthless "Project" of yours was nearly 10 years ago. It's been almost THAT long and you've made NO PROGRESS!? HAAAGHHHAHHHH that's so pathetic it's hilarious!!! Well if you're not gonna get this darn thing over with, sounds like there's no harm in letting me take control for a bit, hrm? "Drawing" all of these disgusting worms... I see no point to such drivel. Why not just showcase the REAL them...? Gyehegheghegh..... you do know I excel at poking around in the tiny brains of such creatures... so why don't we skip the middleman and I let you see what a TRUE NIGHTMARE LOOKS LIKE!!! Nightmare's Power Orb!

An evil entity reveals itself!! Attempting to use the power of Dream Land's Fountain of Dreams for nefarious purposes, this strange star-speckled orb manifests in front of Kirby and King Dedede after Kirby sets the recovered Star Rod back to it's usual resting place. It takes off into the sky, and so Kirby must chase after it using the power of the Star Rod itself! This so-called "Power Orb" is a strange form taken by Kirby's Adventure's true antagonist, Nightmare. Perhaps it acts as some sort of shield or protection, but it ends up not quite being enough to stop Kirby entirely. The Nightmare's Power Orb fight is a classic shoot-em-up style boss fight, already becoming a staple after the Kabula fight from Kirby's Dream Land. Funnily enough this fight has a time limit, the context being that if you don't damage it enough during this sequence, it just leaves and Kirby is forced to crash into the ground. After being weakened enough, the Orb flees to the moon. Kirby keeps up, and it's here where the Power Orb cracks open to reveal Nightmare's true form... which we'll see soon enough! The Power Orb does get referenced fairly often, I suppose it's much easier to depict one of the series' main bad guys as a funny little star ball rather than the more elaborate design that follows. Makes for a nice simple cameo to throw in wherever. We usually see Nightmare take this form whenever he makes an reappearance in a game, like in Mass Attack, or very recently in Air Riders! His parallel counterpart also has it's own Power Orb form, seen in Super Kirby Clash. Last note, but the scene of Kirby clashing against the Power Orb with the Star Rod, a white slash going across the screen while the full moon sits behind them, is one of my favorite moments in the entire franchise, so I was happy to doodle it here. Insanely cinematic intro to a boss fight, especially for an NES game!
