Hello everyone and welcome to our first ever Wicanny gift exchange!! Seeing as Campaign Four is on a current hiatus, we thought this could be a fun way to meet new fans and to pass the time. If this is your first time participating in an event like this, the rules are simple: similar to a secret santa, you will be assigned anonymously to create and receive fanwork from another critter.

Rules

When completing your assignments:

For writers - Fic must be at least 1k words and must be a completed stand alone story.

For Artists - You must submit 1 artwork with at least flat colors (or made to the same standard that would normally be considered a finished piece.) 

(These are just the minimum of what’s required of a finished gift. Feel free to write and draw to your hearts content. You may even create multiple gifts, but only one is required. There is no maximum cutoff, as long as you’re able to submit a completed work.)

Also be sure to pay close attention to your giftee’s likes and dislikes. Similarly, if there are any squicks or hardlines you do not want crossed, even simple pet peeves, then please try to be as thorough as possible when filling out your form.

Damn, the confirmation from Mara that the plan always had been for Thjazi to escape. Mara was meant to be in the Tenebral Reaches and Thjazi was meant to escape, and it was only because she wasn't that Thjazi realised he had to let the execution take place and let himself be killed.

He said, "Not you, anyone but you" when he saw Azune was the Arcane Marshal assigned to scan him, so he realised what position this would put him in. He knew Azune would immediately be arrested if he escaped. But - he only realised he had to actually die when he saw Mara. So there were a few minutes in there - standing on that stage, joking around with his brother over their lunch plans - that he was fully prepared to snap the glyph and put Azune in the noose instead.

So don't worry, Azune! Thjazi didn't let himself be killed just to save you! He was ready for you to die in his place from the moment he realised it was going to be you doing the scan!

the erasure of wick's relationship to armas in fandom is honestly troubling.

there's genuinely no amount of "but i headcanon him as gay" or loving wick and tyranny that justifies outright ignoring the woman he has repeatedly called "his love" and whose treatment at the hands of his family is a large part of why he turned on them in the first place (he was in love with someone and they told him the Light said she wasn't right for him so their relationship wouldn't interfere with his mother's business deal and now she's missing. come on.)

it's falling into the trap that MANY mixed race relationships in fantasy and sci-fi fandoms fall into, where despite being canon, they are largely ignored in favor of two white characters, or a canon female love interest is set aside in favor of a slash ship.

the optics of the fandom disregarding wick's real relationship in favor of shipping him with other white characters is pretty stark. armas is possibly rungjani or half-rungjani and she's noted by brennan to be a commoner. not the merchant class or the nobility. so this is a class-crossed and possibly mixed race relationship that's importance is being dismissed

i understand that she has not physically appeared in flashback or the campaign proper and that inhibits the ability to draw art or write fanfiction, but it's a bad pattern that she is treated like nothing at all. y'all have done more with less. it's not that hard to acknowledge her existence. and to immediately presume she is dead is just ignoring how brennan tells stories. he is not going to set up a "find the missing person" side quest for someone who has been dead the whole time, because that's bad DMing.

assuming that wick is gay (because repressed ex religious) in full defiance of how much he obviously loves armas is simply ignoring who wick IS in favor of who you want him to be.

it's fine if you ship wick with other people, but pretending like he doesn't have feelings for armas (or that he's just ~confused) isn't true to his character and honestly just makes it even more obvious that a subset of the fandom simply can't handle the idea that a racialized woman could be the most important person in a white man's life

we used to be comfortable calling people who "headcanoned" characters as gay to the exclusion of their canonical relationships with women misogynists and now we wring our hands and say "well headcanon what you want..."

my bi ass would love to add bi / panphobic as well. I am tired as fuck of my identity being erased but I cant call it out because somehow thats homophobic? a character isnt less than for having attraction to the opposite sex!!!

I really have no issues with headcanons or projecting onto characters you relate to. Hell, I am super open about doing that with Tyranny. I also don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with ignoring or twisting canon to fit your own headcanons.

I do, however, find it super duper annoying. For example. Gay Wick. Totally fine. Totally valid. He has no confirmed sexuality and even Sam has mentioned not knowing if he (Wick) is straight or not. He could be anything. That’s the fun part of fandom. They can be whatever you want them to be.

But on the flip side I have noticed this small but pervasive notion that this is the canon and to imagine him being read as any other way is baffling. Because that is clearly a gay man, is it not? Because it's basically canon, right?

Which, like…fine. Do whatever you want. But I also want to ask why?

Why is it canon? Because he is a man who grew up in a religious environment that he is now in the process unlearning. Yeah, a lot of queer people go through that but that's not specific to us. You can't point to the Creed or the Halovars as holding any sort of homophobic beliefs.

You can say there’s a lot of queer coding in his story and I’d be inclined to agree. The themes of conformity and forbidden love and discovering yourself are all gay as hell. But that’s if you divorce them from their context. These things don’t exist in a vacuum.

Wick was in love with a person that he was told goes against his religion. His love was twisted and wrong, but the text is also explicit when it comes to the Creed's bigotry against other races and people of a lower standing than them. Again, context. Nuance.

He’s uncomfortable when women express attraction to him. Yeah and he also expresses discomfort at anyone showing any sort of interest in him. He’s self involved and self conscious at the same time.

Then there’s the matter of Teor. This beautiful lion man who comes sweeping into Wick’s life and changes everything. Wick is clearly infatuated with him and in awe of everything he represents. And yeah, I would say that alongside his admiration of Teor’s ability to wield The Light, there is some burgeoning sort of Awakening happening within him. Gay as fuck.

So why can’t he be bi? What about his journey is explicitly unique to the experience of a gay man? A part of me has to wonder if it’s because he’s not traditionally masculine. He’s shown a romantic interest in women (well just one specific woman) multiple times but that’s ignored.
