Hello everyone! I wrote my first fanfic, hooray!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Since I plan to periodically create fan art based on the cartoon Luca, I thought I'd explain my feelings about it.
Oh, I've managed to get hooked on a not-so-popular cartoon, where most people only like the main characters and actively ship them, and I've managed to get hooked on a specific character that almost everyone hates.
Luca is not my favorite cartoon, and at first, I didn't like it at all. Unexpected, right? It's just that for everything else I like, there are great fanfictions that I've enjoyed, but for this particular cartoon, I couldn't find anything that captured my heart, so I had to take matters into my own hands. Moreover, I've always wanted to write.
First of all, I really love the atmosphere of a small Italian town. If you're longing for a vacation in Italy but can't make it, you can definitely turn on this cartoon: the colorful rolling landscapes, the endless sea, the cozy streets with colorful houses and laundry hanging out to dry—it all creates the perfect atmosphere.
I also loved the beautiful sea monsters that can take on human form. The way the main characters had to avoid water to keep their secret reminded me of my favorite childhood series, H2O: Just Add Water. Unfortunately, the main characters, Luca, Alberto, and Giulia, didn't really grab me, although they were quite charming. I especially liked Machiavelli and Ercole Visconti. I always like animals and many villains; I can't help it. Machiavelli is a devoted pet and a stern cat who quickly uncovers the main characters' secret. His face always charmed and amused me. And as for Ercole... He evoked the most emotion in me because he was both irritating and amusing at the same time. Despite all his comedic qualities, he can be a little scary. What's interesting to me about him is that he can develop in different directions: he can become a truly terrifying, serious villain or a former villain who undergoes a redemptive arc. I adore flawed and evil heroes who undergo a difficult transformation. The story of evil's redemption is perhaps one of my favorite plotlines in cinema and literature, and I really want to create a fanfic about such a story.
I would also like to clarify my interpretation of the plot. Some viewers tend to view the cartoon as a metaphor for the story of two gay men. I can understand why, but frankly, this theme is alien to me and doesn't resonate with my personal perception of the world. The director emphasized that each viewer has the right to perceive the story in their own way. This is a huge strength of the cartoon. It leaves room for the personal perceptions of completely different people. So, I see this message: the complex relationships between different races, species, and cultures. As a representative of the Russian people, I understand very well how important it is to be able to adapt and build friendships regardless of origin. Sometimes, people treat you well until your ethnicity is revealed. This is especially well depicted in the Russian film Goodbye, America about Russian immigrants living in America, where one of the main characters hid his origins, pretending to be Polish. Only at the end does he, so to speak, voluntarily step out into the rain, revealing his true identity.
I, too, want to let the rain touch my body and reveal myself. I proudly declare to the world that I am Russian. Let someone perceive me as a monster based on my nationality and views. I won't change because of this; I will always remain myself.
To sum it up, I can confidently recommend the cartoon Luca. The beautiful animation, Italian atmosphere, engaging plot, and charming characters will provide a positive experience, and most importantly, Luca reminds us that true friendship can overcome any borders and differences, that all living beings on this planet have something in common.
And a drawing at the end. Russia as a sea monster. Strong, serious, friendly, kind, and respectful, until it's attacked by self-proclaimed heroes who attack monsters:)
