Years later I saw Dan Bern in Ann Arbor and he was rocking out in this very quiet polite sit-down venue where the audience was totally silent and just did polite little golf claps after each song. The room was totally dead. And you could see him getting frustrated with the lack of interaction. So right in the middle of a song he started talking about how Ann Arbor was the only northern town that sent soldiers to fight for the confederacy during the civil war, because the upper crust of Ann Arbor was all about slavery and oppression, and me and my friend were roaring w laughter and everyone else got all fusty and insulted
