Quiet night at home
i’m not a huge fan of the picture of dorian gray, but i’m rereading it because i’ll be taking a course on victorian lit in the fall
What to Read This Week > WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING
For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
give me the old-school love. write me letters. leave me random notes. kiss my hands. slow dance with me. write a poem. lie down with me on the grass. read to me.
queer books that didn’t disappoint me the way everything else has. please enjoy.
Here’s the thing to remember about anti-racist book lists:
Read these, yes. But then read books that were not written as treatises on racism. Seek out Black art not only because it can teach you something about race but because Black people are simply doing extraordinary work.
Read Morrison as much for her prose and her mastery of pacing as for her politics. Read Ross Gay’s Book of Delights, an ode to little wonders and a reminder to look at the world with gratitude. Read Elizabeth Alexander’s stunning testament to grief and marriage, The Light of the World, and note the innovations in form as she mixes memoir with poetry and recipes, a collage meant to mirror her late husband’s paintings. Read NK Jemisin’s The Fifth Season and marvel at the worlds she builds.
Just a small reminder. Black art does not exist solely to educate non-Black people. Always be expanding your horizons.
oh, to be the owner of a small bookshop on a cobblestone street with roses climbing the front of the building, where books are stacked about in piles and there’s always coffee brewing and a sleepy shop dog lifts his head at the sound of the door’s bell and thumps his tail against the hardwood
some things we should start romanticising
bike rides, especially when listening to music. the wind in your hair, the songs in your ears, every sound being quiet and living in your own bubble of lyrics. (edit: in some countries this is illegal and it can be dangerous - i had not thought of that and i apologise)
sitting in a bus. you’re going back home, maybe you’re reading a book or just looking outside of the foggy glass.
making tea. warming up the water, bringing it to a simmer and closing the gas, pouring it into a ceramic mug, the perfume of tea leaves: it’s a ritual.
buying a new book. walking in a book store, reading the first page of a book that sounds interesting, choosing a book because of its cover, never having heard of that book.
reading the last page of a book. that one doctor who episode where the doctor says he rips the last page of each book he reads, reading the last line and feeling like all the air in your lungs is gone.
that one specific moment when you are coming back from a party and you’re walking the few last steps before getting home.
writing your name on a new notebook. scribbling messy letters or trying hard to make it look pretty.
tying shoe laces. where are you even going?
picking a flower. getting off the road and into a patch of grass just to pick a yellow wild flower, pressing it in a book, or putting it in a glass of water.
finally getting to bed. the cold bedsheets, closing your burning eyes, the small sounds of the city.

excited to go back to campus in the fall! hopefully i’ll get the chance to attend some in person seminar courses.
On Monday I received my package of Star Wars fanzines that was created by @sacredsomethingbykara! Don’t they look stunning!? And they’re so creative and fun! If you’re a Star Wars fan definitely check out their shop for all these zines (and more!)! Can’t wait until Friday for Clone Wars day!
When I think of roses and books, only one story comes to my mind, a tale as old as time… Happy International Book Day!

Today at macrolit.books IG: What’s the inspiration for this stack of books? Please follow us while you’re there. :)
i cower inside the covers of gently worn books because the villains living within them are a lot less frightening than the ones that greet me when i turn the final page.

I will never get over how stunning and gorgeous these covers are for The Folk of the Air trilogy! I love the dark backgrounds and how they really bring out the colors! Queen of Nothing is hands down one of my favorite covers from last year (even though I STILL haven’t read it yet, don’t hate me!)
