Whoa, five years since the old welcome post... time for a revamp.

I'm phoenix, I write smutty, kinky, hopefully ethical rpf for the most part. I do also enjoy writing character fic but I keep getting dragged back to the actors... my fics and my characters often wander off into conversations about politics and queerness and trans rights. Oh — and there's a fair bit of polyamory in there too.

I welcome meta conversation about the ethics of it all, thirst posts about hot people, musing about how we're going to rise up and overcome structural oppression in this epoch of late capitalist white supremacist patriarchy, probably with the help of the orcas... but generally keep the dooming away from me please. We have a busy weekend ahead! Roller derby, silent book club, editing two novels, cat-sitting. It doesn't help that a friend unintentionally got me hooked on Moonlight Peaks, so my hands are too often filled with a gaming device instead of a book 🤭. Has anyone else played it (be warned, it's addictive)? My dad was visiting, and we've been on the hunt for Palestinian books at ATL's many indie bookstores, including many of these!

A friend sent me 🪻 privately for the ask game — I'm assuming that means they don't want their name mentioned... So, 🪻 what is the toughest thing you had to go through, but can say you’ve successfully overcome? This is one of those questions where I'm trying to work out how much to say, both because I don't want to accidentally give away identifying information and because I don't want to trigger anyone. I'll start by saying 'successfully overcome' looks different for everyone but the aim is that we have community and connection, and that we have relationships based on mutual respect and consent, and I think I have that now.

Anyway: tw, domestic violence under the cut.

When I was 17, I ended up in a relationship with a 34 year old guy. And that relationship followed some pretty classic steps, including isolating me from my friends, physically isolating me, both away from anyone (a kilometre to the nearest neighbour) and four hours from my parents. We took a lot of drugs. He was controlling and emotionally abusive. I managed to get away when I was 20.

I haven't touched amphetamines in 30 years. I have come a long, long way from the scared teenager who wrote "I don't think I fucked up today" in my diary all those years ago. I am fierce in my knowledge of my self-worth, although it can still be rocky at times. I am passionately polyamorous and refuse to give my time to jealous manipulation. I am empathetic and compassionate and connect my political commitment to abolition to my belief that community connection and behaviour change programs are the only things that will deradicalise users of intimate partner violence. I'm proud about my queerness now — and it makes me furious that I'm part of the statistics of bi and nonbinary folks who experience the highest rates of violence from male partners.

(There's a reason why a number of my fics have trans teens who get rescued and adopted into loving queer homes...)

🩷 I've always wanted to work in film — I love movies, I'm the sort of person who goes to a film festival and watches as many films as I possibly can. I think combining that with writing and being a film reviewer maybe? But also I did film and screen writing as part of my undergraduate studies and it would also be incredibly cool to write something and have people make it into a film. There are so many fics by people like @ukcalico who build incredible worlds and I can see it so clearly; I would love to have the funding and access to a production studio to turn great works of fiction into film and TV series.

✈️ There are two: Tallinn in Estonia and Toledo in Spain, although this was more than 20 years ago and I went back to Toledo recently and it's become more touristy. But what I loved about both of them was that they were small enough to be intimate, with old stones and romantic bones, but inside the walls and buildings were progressive people, funky music and art, great conversations about politics and power and transforming society.

🌝 This is probably the hardest question of the lot. Is the key part of this question 'to anyone'? So it's a show or book with broad appeal or vital importance? I think at the moment, I would have to say Babylon Berlin, for a look at how easily society goes from being carefree and accepting to fascist. It's in German, and there are currently four seasons but the fifth and final season is coming soon. @howtumblrruinedmylife and I have been watching it every other weekend together for months (over Discord) and were regularly stunned at the quality of the storytelling, the acting, the production and sadly, the parallels with what's happening in both of our countries. There are also enough sub-plots and romantic side-stories that you never feel like it's heavy-handed — sometimes you're distracted by the drama with the film stars or the nightclub or the underground gangs and slowly in the background, there are more and more swastikas on screen... just like in real life.
