See he had braced himself for the beginning of their relationship- that angry, spitting, growling puppy who wanted nothing to do with him. Who Titus had to drag back inside for meals kicking and screaming. Who curled up on his side in their king sized bed at the furthest corner he could. Who spent all his time either outside in the dog kennel or inside hiding in the massive library reading medical textbooks.
He was prepared for them to settle into that reluctant closeness his parents had, that despite it all they knew too much about each other to leave without mutually assured destruction.
He doesn’t know what thawed Dennis towards him, but the first time he went downstairs for lunch and saw Dennis patiently waiting at the table made him stop and stare for a second. He was… pleasant. Asking him about what he was doing in his study. Asking him if the grounds were somewhere he liked to walk around.
Titus waited for the other shoe to drop. Did he want a new car? Some privilege Titus had already forbidden? A blank check?
The first time Dennis laid close enough for Titus to feel his warmth, he couldn’t help but fixate on it. Dennis’s even breath and soft snuffles in his sleep. The way his curls splayed out on the dark silk pillows. (He looked like an angel in his bed.)
He caught himself lingering; in the library he’d bring Dennis a plate of snacks and water when he asked one of the maids to bring him something. He trailed after Dennis as he walked with the dogs through the same woods he had chased him down in. (At his heel, at his side, same as the hounds with how he trotted close.)
He wanted to figure out this enigma. This person who grew up in humble midwestern hospitality. Who smiled at him and asked him how his day was without using it as a Segway into more “important” talk.
“Can I come closer?” He’d whispered one night to Titus, who’d stiffened and replied with a curt “I suppose.” The line of his body next to his own was scalding. He took the answer as the awkward surprise Titus tried to stifle.
He’d woken up intertwined with him, his face buried in Dennis’s chest, the rake of nails on his scalp making him rumble out a soft, sleepy noise. He couldn’t help but press his face into Dennis’s throat to feel his pulse on his cheek. How long had it been since someone touched him this gently without having been paid?
He realized dimly this might be a trap. He was letting his guard down. But as the hand swept over the broad plain of his muscular back he figured it wouldn’t be so bad to die by such gentle hands.
Titus sighed, watching Dennis’s skin ripple with goosebumps.
“Oh, big sigh.” Dennis murmured, voice still raspy with sleep.

after months of tension, they both finally snap during a random spat, in some supply closet at the pitt.
robby has whitaker pinned against a wall, his large hands on the kid’s hips, as he guides them to grind on the leg he slotted between dennis’ thighs ,and shit- the boy’s not turned on.
fuck, is robby taking advantage of his resident ? he could swore whitaker was into it, he’s grabbing robby’s face with so much force, delicious little whines escaping mouth while his lips are still on robby’s, and he’s pulling the man impossibly closer to himself- but the proof’s right there. or at least, what should be right there isn’t, and that’s proof enough.
dennis panics when dr robby suddenly pulls out, oh no he’s gonna say it was a mistake and he regrets it, no, no, no!, but then, his attending just sighs defeated, and drops his forehead on the wall, right above dennis’ ear.
‘do you even want this kid ? is it- am i doing something wrong ?’
dennis is so confused. he feels so good, his mind is bordering on fuzzy, his eyes started to glaze over, and he’s so so wet, wetter than he’s ever been and oh.

because yeah, she was a big part of his life. And then he lost her. but just because he's in a new romantic relationship(s) , doesn't mean he forgets her.
Widowed!Abbot truther because part of him will always be hers no matter how much he loves Dennis and/or Robby. Sometimes he feels so incredibly guilty about being in a new relationship and he breaks down on his partner and feels even guilter.
Either one would assure him that he doesn't need to take off his ring until he's ready even if he never is. And if he ever was, Dennis would buy him a chain to put the ring on to keep wearing in a way Jack felt was less intrusive on his new relationship.
When things get rough outside of work, you're almost guaranteed to find him sitting at his wife's graveside. He won't necessarily be crying but talking to her about his day, about Dennis/Robby or whatever else comes to mind.
In the event that his wife wasn't buried nearby (eg. closer to her parents), he'd go to their favourite park or eat alone at a restaurant they used to frequent. Anything to feel close to her. That includes still keeping some of her clothes in the box in the bottom of his wardrobe that he takes out on bad days.
It's getting better. After she first passed he washed with her leftover shower products and told Robby it's because he didn't want them to go to waste. Sometimes he still buys them and he definitely keeps a bottle (possibly empty now) of her favourite perfume.
Jack is a layered man and he's emotionally mature enough to have done a lot of learning and unpacking. Therapy has helped a lot of course. However, grief isn't linear and he grants himself that grace. Obviously, he'd devote all that he could to Dennis and/or Robby but there are parts they'll have to share with her always <3

I know that once they're together, Jack Abbot is obsessed with making sure Dennis eats enough. It's not that Whitaker has ever said anything to make Jack worry, he's just hyper aware of how difficult it is to get a proper meal during a 12 hour shift in the Pitt. Additionally, no matter how well Dennis sleeps the night before a shift he always wakes up too tired to eat breakfast and comes home too tired to think about making anything actually nutritional. Sandwiches off the cart just weren't enough when you worked in an ER, and on the street team.

Rather than scold him for it, Jack began meal prepping with his free time. It started off with simple; just homemade paninis and some fruit packed in Dennis' bag or left in the break room with his name on. Jack didn't say anything because he didn't want thanks or to make a big deal about it. His priority was making sure Dennis was healthy, although, more selfishly, also that he was keeping his energy up for other activities.
Dennis noticed. He was confused at first because he'd never had anyone take care of him like that. Sure, sometimes Dana or Robby threw an energy bar his way when he looked like he was lagging behind but never anything like Jack did. Even when he was younger, his packed lunches for school were simple and most of the time he would have to help make them anyway.
What Jack did was different, more thoughtful. Especially as the meals began to get more elaborate: home cooked pasta or soups, sometimes a burrito. Food that was actually filling and nutritional and kept him going for the rest of the day. Each meal was carefully prepared and packed with the utmost care. Jack never asked for anything either which seemed even more foreign to Dennis who had been taught that nothing ever came free.
Moreover, it surprised Dennis that Jack was that good at cooking because they went out to eat so often. What the younger man didn't realise was that Jack just enjoyed spoiling Dennis anyway he could. Taking him out to expensive restaurants, buying him flowers, anything and everything to remind his boyfriend just how much he loved and appreciated him. Now that included meal prepping for Dennis too.
Quietly, Dennis accepts it for a while, just enjoying the food without the expectation of anything in return. Sweet, easy loving that he allowed himself for once. Dennis refused to even share with Trinity who had regularly turned to trying to steal just a taste. Especially when Jack started packing muffins he'd baked.
After a few weeks though it moved from just lunches to a tupperware full of breakfast sandwiches for Dennis to freeze and eat as he pleased. Then homemade ice pops as the summer heat hit. It was great, too great, and it started to make Dennis feel guilty. He eventually decides to bring it up to Jack.
As usual, Dennis is a little bit awkward about the timing. He had to take advantage of moments of confidence. Not particularly tactful. "I can feed myself you know," in the middle of a makeout session on Jack's couch, hands on the older man's thigh. Definitely tactless.
"What?" Jack murmured, pulling back slightly to look at his boyfriend. The comment threw off his train off thought and his hand slipped from the blonde curls.
Dennis swallowed thickly but it was too late to back out now. "I just mean- I love the food, of course. It's really sweet but I don't need coddling like a baby," he explained bluntly, hand smoothing the fabric of Jack's jeans before he stood up. "The lunches were great but you don't need to send stuff round to Trin's place every other week," Dennis huffed, moving toward the kitchen.
Jack watched, dumbfounded by the sudden turn of events. He thought Dennis liked all the cooking he was doing, nothing had suggested otherwise until now. "I know I don't need to, I like it, that's all," Jack's voice was smooth but the furrow of his brow gave up his confusion.
Reaching over, he grabbed his crutches to follow Dennis. "I won't do it if you don't want, sweetheart, I was just making sure you were eating enough," Jack explained himself, leaning against the counter next to Dennis. He angled his head to catch the blond's eyeline again.
"I know, I know, I really appreciate it." Dennis nodded, reassuring Jack that he'd done nothing wrong. Everything Jack had done was with Dennis' best interests at heart and that didn't go amiss. "It's just, well, I don't want to be babied," he added bluntly. As much of a people pleaser as Dennis was, for once he didn't feel guilty for speaking his mind. The constant gentle understanding from Jack had fostered that.
The older man nodded in acceptance, a small smile. "M'kay, I got it, you're not some kid you don't need me telling you how to take care of yourself," he reached one hand up, steady enough with one crutch and the kitchen counter to support him. Warm fingers toyed with the back of the wavy mullet.
"I do like it when you cook for me though," Whitaker matched Jack's smile, glad that his boyfriend hadn't taken offence. It wasn't a rejection, not really. "Maybe just the lunches in future?" Slender arms slid around Jack's waist as Dennis pressed closer again.
A pleasant chuckle left Jack as he sat back on the high stool he kept in the kitchen for when his arms got tired without his prosthetic. He wasn't even slightly mad at Dennis, concerned at first, but now amused. Of course his younger boyfriend felt the need to show he was independent and capable. Two things Jack already knew.
"I'm serious, those lunches were the highlight of my shifts," Dennis reaffirmed. He followed as Jack sat, grin spreading wider. Hands still on Jack's waist, Dennis stood between his legs now too. "Just don't need feeding in my own house. When I'm here or at work, all yours, but my house my rules."
Jack leaned in and kissed Dennis' chin. "Got it darling, you're a big boy," he hummed, tone slightly lower but just as agreeable. "I know I overstep sometimes, just like knowing my boy is healthy," the crutches were leaned against the cupboard and Jack's now free hands were slipping under Dennis black tee.
"Then text me and tell me to eat, don't swaddle me like a newborn," Dennis scolded playfully. Slowly, his hands traced up Jack's chest and into silver curls and the nape of that strong neck.
Jack pouted. To anyone else the sight of a grey-haired forty-odd year old veteran and emergency medicine physician pouting would be ridiculous but to Dennis? It was ridiculously hot. Said silver-fox knew it too. "But I need to know for sure you have a full tummy," he teased, large palms flat on Dennis soft abdomen.
The gentleness of it all should not have made Dennis react like it did, yet here he was anyway. From his spot between Jack's thighs, he bent down to kiss at the older man's neck and nip at his jaw.
"Maybe you should focus on filling it in other ways, huh? Lemme take care of eating right," that cocky tone that drove Jack mad was back out to play. "You focus on satisfying my other hunger," Dennis purred against Jack's ear.
With the two now fully occupied with each other, Dennis' disregarded phone buzzed on the table:
'[21:47] (Twin)ity: Hey ik ur planning on telling Jack that u can look after urself or whatever but tell ur ancient bf that if he still wants to cook I'll take it. These breakfast rolls go hard 💯'
Summary: Dennis Whitaker gets a text about a reward from his secret lover and Trinity is pretty determined it's Amy. When he goes over, Dennis ruins Jack's dinner plans completely and the reward becomes something else. The next morning, as promised, Trinity gets her proof that Dennis' lover is definitely not who she expected.
