Paige was experiencing a lot of pain right now. Her feet were sore from being on them for almost seven hours. Her shoulders hurt from carrying her bag and the many prizes you both had won. And she wouldnât admit it so as to not dim the fun, but her head was starting to hurt from all the bright lights and loud noises of the carnival.
But if you were to ask her what the thing that hurt the most was, sheâd say watching the scene right in front of her.
Said scene was of you on your fifth attempt at the ring toss, doing your best to earn enough points to bag the grand prize. You were nothing if not determined so every shortcoming was only fuel to continue but by now you were growing frustrated and Paigeâs aches became harder to ignore.
Even the booth attendant let some tiredness slip in the form of a few yawns here and there.
After the last failed attempt you turn to Paige, the determination in your eyes having significantly dimmed. She lets a small laugh slip at the way you looked at her and it only makes your frown bigger. âWhat is so funny about this?â You narrow your eyes at her.
It only causes her to laugh more. You groan in response. âIâve been trying for almost half an hour and Iâve lost enough money to the toss!â
The booth attendant pretended he wasnât paying attention to your complaining. Maybe he wasnât even pretending at this point.
Paige takes another look at your exasperation and relents. âStep aside,â she motions for you to move so she can take your place. You look at her confused but it quickly morphs into an expression of excitement. Surely her aim is better than yours.
The guy working the booth looks at Paige, questioning wordlessly if sheâs gonna play. She nods and hands the guy enough cash to play yet another round of the ring toss.
He gathers the rings and presses a button that cues up fun lights and suspenseful game music. Instead of a bottle set up, itâs a moving target with pegs all over that youâre meant to aim for. The closer to the middle garners more points , thus granting a bigger prize of your choosing. It takes 50 points to earn the grand prize.
During all your attempts youâd reach 42 at most but now that Paige was playing, it looked like sheâd surpass that quickly.
You and the booth guy watched in awe as she gained points so easily. It was refreshing to watch after your embarrassment of a run. Paige was locked in. Her tongue poked out of her mouth slightly and her brows furrowed to concentrate on aiming at the best spots to gather as many points as she could get.
When the buzzer signaling her time was up the backboard flashed a large, green â82â. You jumped up and down excitedly and Paigeâs mouth curved into a wide smile.
The booth attendant congratulated the blonde and asked her which of the grand prizes she wanted. She turned to you and you pointed to a giant plush of a capybara wearing a strawberry hat. Paige pointed up to it but he was already grabbing to hand it over before she even turned away from you.
He handed it to her and she presented it proposal-style to you with a wide, goofy grin on her face. You grabbed it and hugged it tight immediately. Paigeâs arms wrapped around you and she planted a big kiss on your temple with a âYouâre welcomeâ attached to it. You thanked her continuously and she playfully rolled her eyes at your antics.
âIâm glad youâre happy but I think Iâve had enough carnival today. Mind if we go home now?â She asked sweetly, her voice giving away how tired she was though.
You nodded and let her lead you back to her car in the parking lot. âCan you drive? Iâm too tired,â she said to you when you got to her car.
You sighed but agreed. She was definitely more tired out of the two of you. As soon as you both got into the car she snatched the plush right out of your arms.
At your protests she argued back with, âI won him so technically, heâs mine.â

content & warnings â "four years of heavy hearts and unspoken words meet in the gampel pavilion parking lot, rehashing old wounds" , uhm just poorly written angst sorry...
word count: 1.9k , notes @ the end (i'm sorry for this)
[PRESENT DAY, 30 SECONDS AGO]
âI just wanted you to know.â
Itâs been four years. Four years of pain you thought you numbed. You thought you numbed. Because now that wound in your heart you had tried so hard to ignore felt fresh all over again.
Maybe you shouldâve seen it coming. Maybe you did see it coming. Doesnât make reality hurt any less. Thatâs just the harsh truth. Paigeâs life was changing, her future having so much in store for her. A future that you arenât in.
She left for Connecticut two hours ago. Her last message to you was five minutes ago.
paige :) 9:13PM
Boarding now
Iâm sorry
You blocked her number after staring at the message for another five. Childish, sure, but so was your hoping things would work out for you. Hoping long distance would work out. But Paige was barely out of state and look where you were now. A sick game it is, love. Not fit for childish hopes.
[PRESENT DAY, 2.5 HOURS AGO]
âPlease! Itâll be fun I swear!â Your best friend begged. Sheâs been begging you to go with her to a UConn basketball game. You would but you got off a plane not even two hours ago and entry to the game venue was in less than one. But your best friend is nothing if not persistent and you relent to her continuous pleas.
Within 45 minutes youâve showered, picked out an appropriate outfit, and done minimal makeup. You wanted to look at least a little more presentable.
Your best friend, Elsie, rushes you out to her car to drive you to the UConn campus from her apartment. She hops out of the car excitedly, telling you all about the friends that let her know about this game. You nod to the sound of her voice but you donât pay attention to the words sheâs saying.
This is a womenâs basketball game. You donât realize youâve said that out loud until Elsie looks at you and says, âDuh,â with a weird expression on her face.
You donât say anything but silently, you dread every step closer you take to the arena, knowing what (or who) youâll probably be facing in a matter of minutes.
Elsie spots her UConn friends near the entrance to Gampel Pavilion and runs excitedly up to them, waving you over quickly when she notices you didnât follow her. You walk behind the small group of girls quietly, having said minimal introductions. The place is already packed and buzzing with energy as soon as you step inside.
You follow the way to a registry table and then to your seats. Itâll still be a few minutes until the athletes come out so you take that precious time to calm your nerves. Elsie notices you breathing heavily and shaking your leg and sends you a concerned look. It snaps you back into a more normal state. You were probably worrying for nothing.
Except when the UConn Womenâs Basketball team, or more specifically, a certain blonde on the team, emerges from the tunnels, the stands erupting in cheers, people clapping loudly next to you, it feels like the world stops to lend you that moment of time to feel everything again.
âYou couldâve told me sooner.â Your voice was eerily quiet. It unsettled Paige only because she thought youâd be yelling at her. You wanted to, you wanted nothing more than to scream and yell at her but you couldnât. The only display of emotion coming from your otherwise stoic face were the quiet falls of tears coming from your tired eyes.
âI know, and Iâm sorry I didnât.â
âYou let me hope, Paige. You let me hope like an idiot in love that you would choose to stay. Or at the very least, be willing to keep me in your life!â The last sentence rising in volume as you finally felt the anger take over.
She was committed to the University of Connecticut, a thousand miles away from where you currently were in Minnesota. That wasnât the part that made you angry. You were angry that she had waited until months after she told you where she committed that she couldnât do long distance.
Your chest burned and your throat constricted with all feelings of grief and anger. Bile rose faster than the words you wanted to scream at her, leaving you speechless.
Paige was quiet herself, too ashamed to say anything further. âI hope everything goes well for you in Connecticut.â
And then you walked out of her house, a red tinge in your eyes and an ugly feeling in your heart.
[PRESENT DAY, 2 HOURS AGO]
Paige ran out with that buzzed feeling running through her. It felt like her veins were electric currents. The crowds cheered loudly upon seeing her and she loved playing into it too much, her teammates smirking at her.
They announced the starting lineups and within a matter of minutes the first quarter to the game had begun with the tip-off.
The game felt good. Paige felt in her element and the the crowds felt energized. It was shaping up to be a great game for the Huskies. For Paige especially. She sank a good number of her three attempts, getting her teammates some assists, making most of her free throws.
By the fourth and final quarter, UConn was up by 11. Their momentum hadnât slowed down and every player that got to play got a decent amount of points by the end making a decisive victory with the Huskies up by 18 points in the end.
Paige was on a high even after almost everyone had cleared out. She felt amazing, like she could do anything.
Fate has a funny way of testing her.
[PRESENT DAY, 30 MINUTES AGO]
The game ended well. You did enjoy watching (if you count out all the times your eyes drifted to Paige, which in your defense, is hard since she is kind of their star player, which was a lot of times so maybe you didnât enjoy watching as much you thought) and maybe youâd watch another one (if even thinking about basketball didnât bring back painful memories).
One of Elsieâs friends was still inside the venue talking with some other people and you were waiting outside for her since she needed a ride home. Elsie was just recapping all the moments she loved from the game and you did your best to agree and respond as enthusiastically. If she noticed you were forcing it, she didnât say anything.
A door opens and you instinctively turn to where the sound came from. At first, you donât register who walks out properly because of the canopy of darkness from the night sky.
Then your eyes meet hers and you both freeze. One could argue itâs from the chilly breeze but anyone with two, even one, functioning eyes would be able to tell something was off.
You turn back around quickly, trying to push Paige out of your mind which was much harder now that she was standing the closest she has to you in years. Your attempts are completely futile when you feel a presence behind you and Elsie is making a face at you to turn around.
Reluctantly, you do. And you think you can hear your heart crack like porcelain.
She looks good even in her tracksuit. She still has the same blonde hair and dark roots. The same piercing blue eyes. She still makes you feel the same things she did four years ago. Although now there are more painful undertones as you take her in.
âWhat are you doing here?â she asks, not accusatory, just in genuine question. It takes you a second to reply back, kind of in shock that she was talking to you again.
âIâm- Iâm visiting my friend,â you point over your shoulder to Elsie who waves before turning to walk away, pretending to be on her phone. Youâve told her bits and pieces of your history with Paige but sheâs never gotten the whole picture. Whether it was because âit wasnât that seriousâ or it hurt too bad (itâs the latter), youâre sure Elsieâs probably figured out the answer herself by now
Paige nods. Neither of you say another word for a solid minute, just standing there quietly, looking at each other. Wondering if this is real life.
Paige isnât even sure why or how she ended up here, she only vaguely remembers her feet carrying her over like there aren't four years and paragraphs of unspoken words between you two.
You donât even realize youâre crying until Paigeâs hand instinctively reaches out to wipe the droplets away before stopping herself, knowing that thatâs probably inappropriate to do now. Every fiber of your being wishes she didnât because youâd have let. Youâd have let her do whatever, no matter how reckless.
âIâm sorry,â she whispers. Itâs so faint you have to strain to hear it. âWhy are you apologizing again?â
âBecause I still donât think Iâve said it enough. I really am sorry.â
You only sigh but add a nod along with it. âItâs okay.â Except it really isnât. Somehow the pain is worse than the first time she said it. All you want at this moment is for the pain to stop. For Paige to not say anything further for fear itâll only make it worse.
But she has a knack for doing the opposite of what you want.
âIâm not sure I should even be saying this, or even be here really, but I regret doing what I did to you. I regret it so much.â
âSo why did you do it? Whyâd you let me believe we could work it out? That youâd let me be there for you? I was willing, Paige.â Quiet sobs wracked your body, threatening to get louder as she stays silent again.
Sheâs crying now too. Paige contemplates what to say next, trying to gather her thoughts but thatâs the thing about you, sheâs never been able to think properly around you. So she blurts whatever response her brain conjures up.
âI was scared.â
âScared? Scared of what?â
âOf the possibilities.â Sheâs quiet. Youâre quiet. Dead silence falls between you two.
âYou think I wasnât too? I was so terrified of all the things that could go wrong. But I loved you enough to not care, even when you chose the possibility I was the most scared of.â Anger flooded your body again. This was so unfair.
âEveryday I wish it wasnât the one I chose. But I got in my head and didnât want to lose you while we were thousands of miles apart.â The âso I lost you while we were three feet apartâ hangs in the air.
Nothing else comes out of your mouth. Youâre too tired for this conversation.
[PRESENT DAY, 1 MINUTE AGO]
You thought when you walked away that day four years ago would be the worst pain youâve ever felt. That turned out to be a lie as thirteen words fell from Paigeâs lips.
She didnât say anything else but as the final blow to your already worn out heart, she lets herself hold you in her arms, giving a light kiss to your temple before walking away to her car.
You sobbed dryly as she drove off, the last words she said to you ringing in your ears.
âI still love you. I never stopped. I just wanted you to know.â

c's 30 day prompt challenge
main masterlist!
introduction
welcome! this came about because i was having writer's block, caused mainly by lack of ideas, so i made myself a list of 30 prompts that i'm gonna challenge myself to write for everyday for the month of july! i'll be posting all those works here on tumblr and this is the masterlist just so it's easy to track everything :)
a few notes from c
[1] majority of these prompts i have thought of myself but i have taken some from prompt generators or things i've seen from here (that i will be giving credit to). [2] most, if not all, of the works from this challenge will be written about paige bueckers but that's very much subject to change. [3] none of the works are intended to be more than one part but if i have further ideas and people want to see continuations, they can be extended into multiple parts. [4] lastly, just like all my works, please do not steal my work or post on any other platform, these are intended for tumblr and tumblr only!

content & warnings â "arguing because paige stole your charger" , only playful arguing!
word count: 1k , notes @ the end (something fun!)
âHas anyone seen my charger?â You walked into your living room where some of your and Paigeâs friends were gathered. Most people shook their heads no, some replying out loud. You sighed. Your phone was down to 5% and starting to lag.
You had felt around for it on your bed when the 20% battery warning popped up in the middle of watching your show but left it when you couldnât find it. 20% was okay for now. When you got the 10% warning you felt around more thoroughly, even checking under your bed thinking maybe it had fallen when you moved around to get comfortable.
Unsurprisingly, it wasnât there. Frustration started to set in when you searched all over your room to no avail, your phone battery quickly draining to 8%.
It wasnât on your nightstand, it hadnât been plugged into the outlet at your desk. You vividly remember taking it back to your room after charging your phone in the bathroom to let it play your music while you showered earlier.
After going out to your dormâs common area you searched the outlets behind couches and through the clutter on the kitchen counters which showed no results. Literally where could it possibly be?
Itâs not like your charger has legs and skedaddled off when you needed it.
Or maybe itâs just really good at hide and seek because now your phone was at 3% and you still have no clue where your damn charger could be. Youâve looked in all the obvious places.
Well, maybe except for one.
You quickly pace towards Paigeâs door, leaning close to it to hear what she was doing inside before knocking. âCome in,â the blondeâs voice came a moment later.
You opened the door to see KK and Jana scrolling on KKâs phone. Your figure had appeared in the background and they had seen this, gesturing you over to show you off to the live.
âHey girl! The live wants to see you,â KK smiled brightly. You momentarily forget about the search for your runaway phone charger to greet the people on KKâs live.
You squeeze between KK and Jana so that youâre all in frame before waving and saying hi quickly before turning to the girls on your sides to ask them if theyâve seen your charger.
Jana shakes her head no, followed by KKâs âNegativeâ.
âSeriously? Iâve been looking for like 10 minutes!â You sigh, exasperatedly.
The people in the live chat laughing at your frustration, some empathizing with your pain. You looked down and your phone was down to 1%. It was a losing battle and youâd just let it die at this point.
Doesnât mean you donât still need your charger.
You stand up straight from your bent position between Jana and KK, your face being cropped out of frame. Your head swivels to look at Paige and ask her if sheâs seen the cord.
Sheâs sitting up on her bed, legs stretched out with one crossed over the other, her back against the wall. She wasnât paying attention, her eyes glued to her phone, occasionally laughing quietly at something funny she happens to see while scrolling.
Your eyes meet her figure before flicking to whatâs in her hand. Her phone, on charge, using your charger. The very thing youâve been looking for for almost 15 minutes by this point.
âPaige!â You demand. She looks up from her phone to look at you, her expression calm but confused. âYes?â She responds obliviously. âYou stole my charger!â
She looks back down and then drags her gaze back up to you with a sheepish smile. âGive it back!â You demand again, putting your hand out for her to return your charger. She shakes her head immediately. âNo! Iâm using it now!â Paige retorts. You groan, âYou always do this! You always steal my stuff and then refuse to give it back to me when I ask for it back!â
âOk first of all, you didnât ask, you demanded. Second, you canât just wait until Iâm done using it?â She questions you like sheâs the one in the right. You glare at her. âI demanded it because you stole it, and no, I canât wait this time because my phone is dead and I just wanna watch my show!â
By this point, KK and Jana (and even some people in the living room) arenât paying attention to what theyâre doing. Even the live was invested in this argument. KK was quietly snickering while Jana just watched this unfold.
âCâmonnnn,â Paige whined. âJust give me 5 more minutes!â
You shook your head adamantly. âNo Paige, I need my charger now.â
âHow did you even get it? I had it in my room. And why? You have your own charger, Paige, do you not?â You deadpanned.
Paige just shrugs at you. âAubrey needed a charger so I offered her mine but then I needed to charge but Aubrey wasnât at a good enough percentage so I took yours. I just grabbed it from your nightstand while you were in the bathroom.â
You roll your eyes. Of course she had. âOk well, timeâs up! Hand it over.â She makes puppy dog eyes at you, making you roll your eyes at her again. âThat hasnât worked for you before, it wonât work now.â
She leans her head back against the wall and sighs before unplugging the base of your charger from her wall and crawling on her bed towards where you stood at the edge of it to place the cord in your outstretched hand.
You shoot her a sarcastic smile before thanking her and walking back out to your bedroom. Finally, you can watch your show in peace.
You enter your room and head to your closet to grab your favorite sweater.
But when you open your closet doors expecting to see the fluffy bundle sitting in an organizer just at eye level, it wasnât there.
Then you register what Paige had been lounging in.
You were too busy to notice it hanging off her shoulders. You throw your head back exasperatedly then yell towards her door. And you swear you hear her snicker with KK.
đ â i feel somewhat ashamed that this is the longest work i have on here.. also hi again! i haven't written in a bit because i haven't had any ideas :( my requests are open if anyone wants to send something in! anyway, this is day one of something i've decided to try! for july i'm gonna pick a prompt from a list i have and write something based on that! i didn't take the list from anywhere i just made it myself. i wanted to do this to just write more and push myself to write stuff with creative freedom since a lot of prompts are quite vague. but yeah! that's my update, sorry this so long oops. hope this was entertaining to some degree, thank you for reading!!
