But the later books are fun parodies of classic fantasy tropes PLUS increasingly touching treatises on kindness and the human condition and parallels of real world inequality and the evils we face PLUS have the benefit of being set in a world growing richer and more established as the series goes on

A very random Good Omens/Star Trek DS9 crossover thought, at least in terms of ship dynamics.

One thing I really love about Aziraphale/Crowley in Good Omens is that Crowley desperately tries to be a cool, suave demon, but nobody believes in his cool and suave image except Aziraphale. That’s why Crowley is at his coolest when he is actually Aziraphale pretending to be Crowley in the body swap: he becomes the awesome, swaggering serpent of hell that Aziraphale sees in him.

That same dynamic is present with Garak/Bashir. Garak wants to project the image of the cool, unflappable lizard spy, but nobody believes in this image except Bashir. 

Which is why I propose that if there were some kind of Star Trek bodyswap shenanigan between Garak and Bashir, Bashir in Garak’s body would be much cooler than Garak in Garak’s body, because Bashir believes his hype. 

I would read that fanfic.

it’s interesting how eleanor shellstrop acts like she’s lazy when she’s actually incredibly hard working. instead of just running away, she got herself legally emancipated from her neglectful parents and worked to afford her own apartment, (as well as presumably school tuition and healthcare). she was the top salesperson at her job for multiple years. the tech startup she was a temp for wanted to hire her full-time and thought she would make a great member of the team. she threw herself into learning ethics and moral philosophy, reading incredibly difficult books multiple times in order to understand it. when she threw a party for the neighborhood residents, even tahani, who threw huge parties as a living, thought eleanor did a good job.

eleanor puts on a big show about not caring about anything, but in reality she cares so much.

Once we were in a (poorly-researched) Viking-themed world and, having just about completed the main quest, spontaneously realised that the whole thing was a double feint by Loki, who’d planted an agent in our party that we’d just killed. We were being distracted by this necromancer nonsense while Loki was on the way to poison Yggdrasil and bring destruction upon the entire world.

Except he wasn’t. Loki had nothing to do with anything and had planted an agent to mess with us as kind of a joke. Then we marched off to ‘save’ Yggdrasil.

Bringing Loki’s agent along with us. We’d killed the wrong dude. And now that agent had a really great idea to seriously fuck shit up, thanks to us.

In that campaign we also managed to collapse half a continent into a lava dungeon and turn a neutral but dangerous sea monster who happened to be residing on a major shipping lane, into an evil undead sea monster who actively targeted ships for the joy of killing.

That is an excellent example of a phenomenon I like to call "Chekhov's Gun Show", i.e. there is no single insignificant detail you can put down that can be guaranteed the players won't treat as the key to some great plot point. To you it's just a throwaway NPC, a careless piece of set dressing, a line of dialog you ad libbed without thinking, but to them? No! It's a CLUE! It's OF VITAL IMPORTANCE! Don't you think your players know a Chekhov's Gun when they see one? They are SMART, COMPETENT GAMERS! Chekov's Guns round every corner! Never mind you're just trying to make the world feel lived in, and waving a giant glowing arrow over the actually important details. To them, they're stood in a vast convention centre filled with potential Chekov's Guns that you, the GM, keep insisting aren't really there like some kind of inverse Emperor's New Clothes deal
