Black Gobi

............ On the horizon, a mountain pass surrounded by numerous hills came into view. “Up ahead is the Black Gobi, connected to the eastern edge of Lop Nor to the southwest, and to the China–Mongolia border to the north,” Hao Ming said over the radio. The vehicle sped forward, and we could vaguely see the bunker on the hilltop. We had arrived at the mysterious and terrifying “Danbira Lama’s Castle,” vividly described by the Russian explorer Obruchev. “Everyone, take half an hour to explore. We’ll meet back here in 30y minutes!” Hao Ming issued the order, brief and precise. I grabbed my camera and pushed open the vehicle door, only to be hit by an unexpectedly strong wind that made it impossible to open my eyes. While inside the Patrol, I hadn’t realized how fierce it was outside. There were no swaying branches or dust being kicked up. I had never experienced such a scene—winds lashing against my face, yet utterly soundless. Just as Hao Ming had described, the ground of the Black Gobi was covered with black gravel, each piece about as thick as a mobile phone. Standing there, it felt like I was on another planet. ............

Deep South Street Slang Check — Wang Xiaoman needs YOUR ear!

Hallo, I'd like you to meet Wang Xiaoman—my favorite key character in my novel N39° Legend—Across the Taklamakan. He's a smart… hmm… handsome guy from southern China. He loves making friends and is always eager to help—though sometimes his help ends up… not so helpful. I've been waking up at 5 a.m. every day to spend an hour studying Southern American slang, but he still doesn't trust me, a non-native author, to nail it (secretly, I think he's probably correct). He dreams of speaking authentic Southern street slang, so he's got something to say to all you native speakers out there. Take it away, Xiaoman. [hands him the mic]

Ayo, Tumblr! Ya boy Wang Xiaoman rollin’ up. 26-year-old young buck—only made it to third grade ’fore I bailed. Been haulin’ six-wheelers to stack paper, now I got a slice of the action in a big-ass garage. Hell, I even snatched a stage win in a rally-raid—shaved three full minutes off the record in a bone-stock Wrangler. But that’s all past-glory chatter, ha~

[Xiao Gai cut in: tell the folks why you here.] Bet. Xiao Gai says the slang in the book ain’t half bad, but I need that real back-roads flavor from y’all. Tryna sound smooth as them country boys croonin’ on the porch radio—ya dig? “Y’all,” “ain’t,” “fixin’ to,” the whole nine. So help a brother out. If I spit somethin’ whack as hell, call me on it—drop a comment, school the author, do ya thang. I wanna rep my desert crew with legit drawl (yeah we’re out in the dunes but we got Southern vibes!), no cap. Appreciate it, y’all!

Daryaboyi, nestled along the Keriya River, is the deepest human settlement in the Taklamakan Desert. “Darya boyi” is likely a transliteration from Uyghur ئەتراپىدە دەريا بوادى: darya means “river,” and boyi means “bank” or “riverside.

It was my English teacher who introduced me to Tumblr.

A couple of days ago, I found out online that my English teacher, Taylor Swift, got engaged to a gym teacher.

I first got to know TS in 2009. This time, I’m determined to understand how she evolved from a sweet country singer into a global superstar. In my deep dive, I watched a video where she mentioned that she likes to drop by Tumblr to see what her fans are up to—that’s how I ended up here; I’d never even heard of the site before. （I spend every day online, yet apart from WeChat, I don’t use any other social media.）

Seeing TS so healthy and relaxed makes me genuinely happy; she’s still as kind, generous, and talented as ever.

Hello Tumblr!

Just set up my digital basecamp here.

I’m an overlander and novelist whose novels are forged from my true expeditions of Earth’s toughest and most enchanting realms—the Taklamakan Desert and the Tibetan Plateau.

This life might seem worlds away from my former days as an electronics engineer, living the coffee-and-code grind, simple and stale. But deep in my mind, a dream was burning: living through, heart stripped bare, the Taklamakan's ocean of silence and Tibet's wind-carved plateaus.

The moment my flight from Europe touched down, I began turning that dream into reality. The road to aim was not easy as usual—letdowns and bitter letdowns, setbacks even deceived.

Despite a cycle of disappointment, I eventually made it with a few buddies who shared the same concrete desire. I thought that would be the end. Instead, the memories refused to stay confined to the grand Taklamakan or the vast Tibetan Plateau; they poured themselves onto the page and became these two books:
