Little bird, little bird,
What have you seen?
So small and afraid
Of what’s hiding between—
Deep in the shadowy
Cracks in your mind,
The remains of a scared
Little girl left behind.
Little bird, show me
That ravening strain
That threatens to burst
At the seams of your brain.
You can’t differentiate,
Asking anew:
Which part is the hunger
And which part is you?
Little bird, listen,
You don’t have to hide
From your family and friends—
Why, they’ve already died!
Haven’t you wondered
Why you’re so alone?
Did you forget tearing
The meat from their bones?
Don’t you remember
Their terrified faces?
Oh, what funny things
Your poor mind replaces!
Little bird, wandering
Out on your own,
‘Twixt malice and
Tepid attempts to atone.
You’ve been so restless
Since you were exhumed—
Caught between love
And the urge to consume!
Little bird, what is
That look in your eyes—
Starving to death,
Or else eaten alive?
