A few new looks at Captain James Conrad in Kong: Skull Island.
Oh my God *thud*
Hahahahahaha
after reading a huge fantasy series that leaves you with a book hangover:
Symptoms of PTSD.
We knew, my immediate family, that my husband has PTSD from the moment he stepped out of my truck to introduce himself to my dad. I of course knew this from the minute I found out what he used to do for the US military. At 17, he signed on with the Army, and by 18 he was on his very first deployment as a Calvary Scout Sniper. My dad is a retired soldier with PTSD himself (blown up, shot at, the whole nine yards), and he knows it, and he’s done awesome at dealing with it without much help. So, over the course of my relationship with my husband, my dad has made a point to call my husband every so often to make sure he’s doing okay.
Josh (my husband) would not admit to himself that he was having trouble. He had flashbacks and nightmares. He is still hyper vigilant, aggressive at times, and forgetful. He won’t tell me his nightmares or his flashbacks, and I don’t push, especially around the time of year where he lost his spotter and best friend. Yet with everything he went through, Josh is the most loving and wonderful husband and father.
After a particularly bad night of flashbacks, he decided it was time to get some help. I wanted to look for ways to help him, to show him that I support him and love him no matter what, but getting that man to take a pill, let alone make his appointments is like pulling teeth from the mouth of a mule. So I went to the old timers at my job, one of whom pointed me toward essential oils. After some Googling, I chose Young Living. It’s been three weeks of roller bottles, diffuser blends, orders, trials, and of course, errors. We’ve spent more than double what I originally intended, but I have absolutely no regret, because these past few weeks have been almost completely symptom free for Josh. Not only that, but the rest of our family is feeling better too. My skin is clearer, the kids are calmer, and everyone is sleeping better. I highly recommend them for anyone who is sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, or carrying burdens no one should have to bear.
we have calcium in our bones
So i worked with veterans for a few years.
To me, John is absolutely reminiscent of a lot of the… slightly scarier vets?
Like he absolutely is hyper vigilant
Like… people only picture that as like scared and eyes darting all over the place, panicky, but … it also manifests in a much… slower… more deliberate way of looking around. Walking into a room and taking a quick scan of it to pick out the best way to escape, the most likely looking people to start trouble, mood of the room so you know if you need to play it cool.
So he walks through the door, quick glare at everyone, then a forced smile as he loosens his posture and plays it cool. But the SECOND anything starts turning he isn’t remotely startled, just moves right towards that stack of beer bottles he noticed on his way in, palms it and positions himself where he needs to be in order to take someone out. When the situation cools he’s reluctant to put the bottle down, but he does it anyways. Either spends the rest of the evening hovering near the bottles or else purposely stays away from them, while being incredibly aware of how far away they are.
JOhn’s the type of vet that seems pretty much to be fine, but his family will say hes secretive and more intense than he used to be.
John is the kind that stays completely calm and quiet while someone yells at him, but everything in the set of his jaw and the way he’s shifted his balance, screams out silently ‘please give me a reason, any reason, you have no idea who you’re picking a fight with’
i ADORE john but anytime i see a fic where he is nothing but sweet and understanding, all i can think is how much, to me, JOhn is playing the role of a civilian. He knows how to do it, and most people probably think he plays it flawlessly.
(((sorry mycroft, you have no idea what you’re talking about. PTSD manifests in a lot of ways, and John’s particular version isn’t even rare))
I love this and agree it is so, so John. I come from a military family and there is so much about him that I recognise.
I really thought the writers dropped the ball with John’s PTSD…that stuff doesn’t just go away easily (if ever), and certainly isn’t cured by one good romping adventure.
The only evidence we’ve had of John’s PTSD since then has come almost entirely from Martin Freeman’s performance, which I am really thankful to him for.
In addition to everything byjove mentioned above, there’s the fact that whenever John’s near gunfire - like when Sherlock shoots the wall in 221b; and outside Irene Adler’s flat - he ducks and covers like he’s in a war zone. Also, when AJ mentions being tortured in The Six Thatchers, he almost goes completely fetal; ducking down and covering his head, and even rocking himself a little for comfort.
(Okay, so the writers acknowledged his PTSD a little bit in The Final Problem by having Sherlock ask John - the combat veteran - if he’s alright after the prison Governor shoots himself. Not Mycroft; not the civilian who doesn’t like to get blood on his hands…Sherlock makes sure John’s got a handle on his PTSD.)
FWIW, Martin Freeman grew up in a very military town. I don’t know if he knew anyone on active duty, but however he came by it, he has certainly done his research. And more importantly, from things he said in interviews around the time the show first started, I think he feels a responsibility to the real people who have been through war. And a big part of that responsibility is honoring what they went through, by showing its after-effects in a consistent and reaslitc way…by making sure that people know the effects of war are something that stay with a person forever.
Reblogging again for @qthewetsprocket‘s excellent commentary. Regarding your last paragraph: I believe Martin’s dad was a naval officer and that his grandfather was in the RAMC (as seen in Who Do You Think You Are?) so both of these connections could have definitely influenced his performance as John as well.
I remember in a Sherlock interview he said he’d spoken to army vets after he got the role to learn more about it. :D
I love this so much. John’s PTSD is so similar to my husband’s.
oooooo
Found my cat.
AUDIBLE GASP WHEN THE CAT CAME OUT
THE WHOLE VIDEO I WAS WONDERING HOW THAT CAT LOOKED AND HOW CUTE THE MEOW WOULD BE AND I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED.
It’s a new year yeah? Holy fucking shit. People can do so much in a year. I got divorced, remarried, and pregnant in one year. (Not this year, but yeah. The Hubby is one sexy beast I couldn’t help it. Think Cowboy Tom Hiddleston and you’ve got my dude. Oooo! Story idea!) We bought a house for ridiculously cheap. I dabbled in Young Living essential oils and discovered that that shit actually works! I want to hear what my badasses did in a year that surprised and/or empowered them to be as awesome as I know they are! Seriously, let me hear it ladies!
I will never get past the cuteness of Baby Groot

Impromptu Michael Fassbender Fic
A/N: In collaboration with the lovely and wonderful vanillabeanlattes and hotsouthernstubbornponymess, here is an absolutely filthy smutty Fassy fic. It seriously came out of no where, and it was such a pleasure to work with these two! Darlings, I cannot wait for next time! <3
Please do heed the warnings, though. This entire thing is insanely full of smut. Light bondage. Definitely definitely NSFW!
Enjoy! Xx
He looks like he’s just waiting for you to finished getting dressed for your date and all he can think about is undressing you. And when you come out in a brand new dress that you bought just for that night - a beautiful red number, tailored to perfection - you give him a little twirl. He stares for a moment and before you know it, he throws you over his shoulder and heads for the bedroom.
