Box turtles
Does anyone know much about 4 toed (eastern box + 3 toed hybrid) box turtles? I have one that I’ve had for.. gosh.. years now. He always runs around the back yard during the spring/summer times and once it gets around 40 degrees in the fall we bring him in the garage (where it stays about 40 degrees during the winter) in a plastic tub to hibernate (it makes it easier on us to check on him/give him water while he’s in hibernation.) So, I know all of his food requirements and such, and his hibernation requirements, BUT my dad is saying stuff about getting rid of him since I’m only at my parents’ every other weekend. :( and I love crush, I mean, c'mon.. I even built a freaking shallow pond in the back yard just so he’d have a good water source (and our yard is nothing but slate rock.. so it was tough) He’s awesome. He’s my little buddy. I’m the only one he let’s pet on the head. Everyone else he hides from. So, since I obviously DO NOT want someone else that I may not even know to take care of the turtle that I’ve raised and have watched grow over the years, does anyone know tank requirements for them? When we put him in his tub we give him shredded paper and Pete moss. Is just pete moss okay for an all the time substrate? I don’t care if he needs a 5000 gallon tank, I will work extra to get it just so I can keep my buddy. The sad thing is that my dad says stuff like this just because he gets mad that I don’t come home EVERY weekend. Like sorry, dude. But I’m grown now?? So I’m not sure if he’s serious or not but I need to start gathering information for a just in case basis.
An adult box turtle would need a pretty decent sized tank… but you could easily build a tabletop enclosure since you are not afraid of building things for your turtle. Try googling it, you will likely find a lot of build options. It will take time but it will also probably be cheaper than buying a pre built one. Substrate opinions vary depending on the person you ask. I keep Littlefoot on a mixture of things… potting soil (it is VERY important to get potting soil without perlite- which is that white styrafoam stuff in it. Your turtle will want to eat it), reptibark, some bark I collected once when we were camping, sphagnum moss, and dried leaves from outside. Keep in mind if you collect things from outside it will likely bring in bugs. I don’t mind at all. Littlefoot’s tank actually supports a little bug ecosystem. There are rollie pollies everywhere and worms in the dirt… I even saw a baby cricket at one point. It is very important that turtle kept inside have the proper lighting. They need a heat lamp on one side of the enlosure and then all over uvb/uva. Try to keep one side of the enclosure warmer than the other so if they get too hot that they can move away and cool themselves down. You obviously know about the importance off water and having a place to soak. A big plant drainage saucer works really well for this. I think I may have covered a lot of the bases? Feel free to message if you want to talk more! :D
My turtles are in an Ikea bookcase we bought for like $30 and it’s been working wonderfully. We duct taped all around the bottom edges so that the dirt stays in. My turtles have coconut coir and sphagnum moss and some large flat rocks scattered about.

edited to add, I have Ornate box turtles, one is 6 inches and one is 4.5 inches, so I’m not sure how big yours is but you might need bigger. At any rate, I highly recommend a bookcase!
Thank you both so much!! I’ll definitely look into building something for him and getting together a price on how much it’ll all be!
No problem at all! I'm glad you got other opinions and ideas as well! You should definitely post pictures if you decide to build, and even if you just set something up! We love to see how different box turtle enclosures can be!
((He’s heeeeere! Everyone, meet Michelangelo. He is now the official mascot of this blog. Don’t mind him being a little shy. He’s still getting used to everything.
By the way, Michael Bay… This is what a box turtle looks like. Get it right next movie.))
Hi Michelangelo? Can I call you Mikey? Welcome to the world of the internet. It’s a strange place! Pssst… just so you know the turtles from TMNT are supposed to be Red Eared Sliders, not box turtles.
((Which is exactly why I said what I did. Those turtles in the movie were indeed red eared sliders, and it even said red eared sliders on April’s little psycho presentation to her boss, but later on in the movie Sachs calls them “itty-bitty box turtles.” Now, I’m not sayin’ one is right and one is wrong, ‘cause the guys that wrote the original comics never specified their species, I’m just saying there’s an inconsistency here and Michael Bay clearly doesn’t understand that there IS a difference between RES and box turtles.
Either that, or he didn’t want to drop the $150-$200 per turtle for proper box turtles and forgot to change that line in the script after he bought his $15 turtles. I’m willing to believe either one, to be honest.))
Sadly there are WAY too many people that don't know the difference between a box turtle and any other type of turtle. It really is maddening... people tag pictures of RES, painted turtles, and other turtles that they come across as box turtles all the time. It's all over Instagram and even here.No one wants to take the time to understand the difference, they just want to be trendy with their turtle picture and see how many likes they can get. :/ All this aside, Your new boxxie is very handsome and you get kudos for naming him after my favorite TMNT!
We received our first Christmas card the other day! It is from our friends L.D. and Lucky and their humom Greta! They also sent a sweet little handmade ornament for our Christmas tree! As you can see, Littlefoot's stocking is up! He is eagerly awaiting Santa Clause!
This is a sweet little stop motion video about how you can mow your yard in a more box turtle friendly way!

I cannot stress it enough my friends NEVER take the matters of a wild animal into your own hands, no matter how well your intentions. If you don’t know what to do when you find a wild animal, find someone who does, or better yet, contact your local wildlife shelter. This could be a matter of life or death for the animal or in venomous cases, you.
Here is a list of wildlife rehabilitation centers divided by each county in Houston: https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/rehab/list/ If you don’t live in Houston just search for your local wildlife shelter.
Box turtles rarely need help, and don't need to go to the pond like so many people think. They are terrestrial and usually just going about their business when people come across them. The only time a box turtle needs your help is when it is in the road, and even then you should just help it cross to the side it is facing and leave it at that. If you find an injured turtle, try your best to remember exactly where you found it- heck even take a picture- and then find a rehabber that can nurse it back to help. That picture or tack sharp memory of where you found it allows the turtle to be released back into its EXACT habitat and continue on with its life as normal as possible.

I forgot to tell you guys but yesterday I carried a turtle -I think it was a Box Turtle- across the road they were trying to cross in front of my school and everyone stopped for me as I got out of the car to help it across the road.
This lady gave me a thumbs up too and that was the highlight of my day, saving a turtle.
:)

BOXING BOX TURTLE! Day 5 of Boxing BEASTS! He might not be fuzzy or as cute as my previous boxers or any where near as fast. While he might be a bit slow with the punches he can take punch better than any other. This is the newest of my boxers so far! He did end up looking like Gamera more than I intended!
