margaery curls her legs under her, setting a fluffy white throw blanket over her and loras. the television screen flashes before them, another episode of their new favorite show, bridgerton, beginning again.

the  music  pumped  through  bryce's  blood,  reverberating  through  her  bones  and  down  into  her  soul.  head  tips  back,  auburn  hair  spilling  down  her  back  as  she  moves  in  tune  with  the  beat.  sweat  beaded  along  her  spine  and  between  her  breasts,  all  the  bodies  of  fae  and  shifters  alike  crowding  the  club.  a  broad  smile  spreads  across  her  face  as  she  meets  danika's  gaze,  pulling  her  best  friend  away  from  the  group  of  males  surrounding  her  so  they  could  dance  together  instead.    ❛ hold  still! ❜    she  sees  danika  mouth,  the  music  too  loud  for  her  to  actually  hear  the  words.  she  watches  as  the  wolf  licks  the  pad  of  her  thumb  before  gripping  bryce's  chin  and  rubbing  a  smudge  of  lipstick  from  under  her  bottom  lip.     ❛ thanks!  that  lion  shifter  was  a  real  sloppy  kisser! ❜

that  look.  damn  that  look.  it's  as  if  he  can  see  past  all  her  defenses  into  the  deepest  part  of  her  soul.  he  seems  to  understand  her,  truly  understand  her,  in  a  way  that  nobody  but  gabby  ever  could.  ever  care  too.  but  here  was  the  god  king  of  rashearim,  the  world  ender,  taunting  her  into  accepting  his  help.

he releases her with a laugh, the question almost ridiculous if not for the countless years they spent hating one another. being in competition kept them at odds. sometimes sam wonders what they could have been all this time if they'd only learned to work together instead of in opposition to each other. there's a hefty sigh he releases in knowing she may laugh at him. at his vulnerability. or that it may send her running without bothering to look back.

"because i care about you." the words pass between them almost flatly. because if sam was going to be honest, he couldn't give more emotion. he wouldn't be caught without a sense of pride. he cares for celaena but he has his limits. "is that not obvious? i sequestered you here in secret. i've given you multiple heartfelt speeches." sam stops, scratching the back of his neck before forcing himself to look directly at celaena again. "this may be the last one, by the way. i don't know if my ego can handle another brush off."

nothing is said to require a response. sam doesn't want her to say something she doesn't mean, but he won't keep fighting for someone who isn't interested in being fought for. she could handle herself. that much was obvious in every single thing celaena does. "i'm not afraid of leaving. i'm afraid of never truly living. arobynn would kill us, you're right. but that's only if he was able to find us. and i don't know about you, but if there were any two people who could probably disappear under the radar, never to be seen again, i'd say it's you and me."

because  I  care  about  you.  the  words  strike  a  nerve  in  her,  the  fortified  dam  that  has  kept  all  of  her  emotions  in  check  for  the  past  ten  years  cracking  down  the  center  and  threatening  to  spill  out.  his  gaze  is  like  a  weight  settling  over  her  and  it's  an  effort  not  to  look  away.  she  is  not  used  to  being  vulnerable,  or  from  receiving  any  type  of  vulnerability  in  return.  emotions  were  a  weakness,  arobynn  taught  her.  something  to  be  used  to  your  advantage.  and  any  time  she  had  shown  a  flicker  of  something  other  than  ruthlessness.  .  .  .  well,  she  was  punished  for  it.

but  she'd  be  lying  to  herself  if  she  said  she  hasn't  come  to  care  for  sam  regardless.  despite  her  best  efforts,  he'd  somehow  snuck  past  her  defenses  and  wormed  his  way  into  her  heart.  arobynn's  plan  to  pit  them  against  each  other  only  driving  them  into  each  others  arms.  but  lying  was  what  she  did  best,  especially  to  herself.  would  he  still  think  the  same  of  her  if  he  knew  the  truth?  or  would  he  curse  her  and  sell  her  back  to  the  highest  bidder  in  order  to  buy  his  own  freedom?

no,  no,  no.  sam  wouldn't  do  that.  because  here  he  was,  bearing  his  heart  to  her  in  hopes  she  might  give  him  a  sliver  of  herself  in  return.  he  was  goodness  and  light,  where  she  was  death  and  darkness.  she  wanted  to.  gods  she  wanted  to  so  badly  it  hurt.  but  she  was  scared.  all  she  had  known  her  whole  life  was  death  and  destruction;  could  she  really  forge  a  new  path?

a  hint  of  a  smile  graces  her  lips  at  the  passion  in  his  voice,  the  strength  in  his  words  solidifying  her  decision.    ❛   you're  a  damned  idiot.   ❜    she  says  shaking  her  head,  stepping  forward  and  closing  the  gap  between  them.  they  both  were,  if  they  were  truly  going  to  go  through  with  this  plan  and  thought  they  could  get  away  unscathed.  she  stops  a  breath  away  from  him,  craning  her  head  back  to  look  up  into  his  honey  brown  eyes.     ❛   because  I  care  about  you  too,  sam  cortland.  I  always  have.  you  plan  will  almost  certainly  get  us  killed  us  but.  .  .  I'm  all  in.   ❜    and  then  she  leaned  up  on  her  tiptoes,  and  kissed  him.

head  cocks  to  the  side,  two  predators  regarding  each  other.  black  waves  cascade  down  her  shoulder,  her  movements  pure  feline.  his  request  stirs  something  deep  in  her  chest,  the  challenge  rousing  the  ig'morruthen  inside  her.  they  may  have  a  common  goal  for  the  moment,  but  they  were  still  mortal  enemies.  and  every  molecule  in  her  body  was  screaming  at  her  to  both  bolt  as  far  away  from  him  as  possible  while  simultaneously  urging  her  forward.

she  steps  forward  until  they  are  almost  chest  to  chest.  even  with  her  heels  she  has  to  crane  her  head  back  to  look  up  at  this  god  king.  but  he  didn't  scare  her.  because  she  was  a  monster  born  from  the  deepest  pits  of  hell,  the  thing  nightmares  could  only  hope  to  capture.     ❛ careful,  liam. ❜    she  purrs,  dragging  a  finger  down  the  center  of  his  chest.     ❛ you  don't  want  to  wake  the  beast. ❜

this  had  to  be  a  nightmare.  a  real  fucking  bad  one.  because  kaden  was  supposed  to  be  dead.  no,  not  just  dead.  oblivion.  samkiel  had  told  her  himself  how  his  head  had  been  severed  clean  from  his  body,  the  molecules  of  his  very  soul  split  until  they  no  long  existed.  and  samkiel  never  lied  to  her,  which  meant  that  the  universe  was  well  and  truly  pissed  at  her.  she  wasn't  sure  which  was  worse.

❛ help  me?! ❜    dianna  barks  a  laugh,  the  words  sounding  ludicrous  coming  out  of  kaden's  mouth.  she  wasn't  sure  the  word  '  help  '  was  even  in  his  vocabulary.     ❛ did  being  shredding  into  oblivion  and  brought  back  to  life  somehow  scramble  your  brain?  why  would  I  ever  believe  a  single  word  coming  out  of  your  mouth? ❜

she  levels  her  gaze  at  him,  dark  eyes  bleeding  blood  red,  her  fingers  itching  to  lengthen  into  claws  so  that  she  can  rip  that  look  off  his  face.  instead,  she  makes  a  show  of  contemplating  it.  crossing  her  arms  over  her  chest  and  tapping  a  red  nail  against  her  chin  as  if  he  had  just  asked  her  the  most  philosophical  question  in  the  world,  the  wedding  ring  on  her  finger  glinting  in  the  light  with  the  movement.  oh,  this  would  surely  piss  him  off  more.

a  truly  devious  smirk  starts  to  curl  at  the  edge  of  her  lips  as  she  hums,     ❛ hmmm–  i'm  gonna  have  to  go  with  no.  thanks  for  the  offer  though. ❜

her social skills are nearly as poor as his own. he can hear lucien snicker from the room next door , imperceptible to human hearing. tamlin has never been good at reading people &* it seemed that was still quite true , even with their isolation in the spring court. it was why he'd gladly shrugged off his duties to mingle with others to lucien as the court emissary. if only he could let him handle this particular situation.

he gives a tight smile &* controls his urge to bite back to her aggression. he needs her to like him. charm &* kindness were the key -------- if lucien ( or common sense ! ) was to be believed. ❛ suppose i have to work twice as hard if my good looks aren't even palatable , then. should i go find another book ?   ❜ in the smallest gesture of his own aggressive nature , he lazily tosses the book he'd offered her onto the table beside her. ❛ that one is probably too boring for you anyway. all sappy romance &* people saying nice things about each other.   ❜

a  beast  peers  behind  grey  eyes,  pacing  back  &  forth,  waiting  to  pounce.  it  can  sense  the  creature  before  her   (   she  always  did  have  an  uncanny  ability  to  see  the  monsters  underneath   )   maybe  because  like  calls  to  like.  or  maybe  because  she  knows  that  pretty  things  are  always  nothing  but  claws  and  teeth  beneath  the  surface,  waiting  to  shred  the  innocent  to  pieces  if  they  dare  get  to  close.

nesta  was  taught  the  two  most  important  things  about  the  fae  when  she  was  a  girl:  the  prettier  they  were,  the  more  dangerous  and  to  never  play  one  of  their  games.  and  it  just  so  happened  she  found  herself  in  the  midst  of  both.  and  if  there  was  one  thing  she  knew  for  certain,  it  was  that  this  was  all  for  show.  one  did  not  simply  kidnap  you  from  your  home  and  then  play  gracious  host.  but  the  real  question  was   why?

❛ i  wasn't  even  aware  you  could  read. ❜    she  quips,  not  even  bothering  to  look  up  from  her  own  book,  mindlessly  turning  to  the  next  page.  perhaps  if  she  angered  him  enough  he  would  send  her  home.  realize  she  was  more  trouble  than  she  was  worth  for  whatever  twisted  game  this  surely  was.  her  attention  is  finally  grabbed  by  the  book  hitting  the  table  beside  her,  a  flash  of  that  beast  behind  his  emerald  eyes.  there  you  are.  she  plucks  the  book  up,  a  hint  of  satisfaction  rolling  through  her  as  she  gives  him  a  hard  stare.     ❛ on  the  contrary.  I  quite  like  sappy.  it's  a  nice  reprieve  from  the  harsh  reality  of  being  kidnapped  and  forced  to  make  small  talk  with  a  fae. ❜

even  though  nesta  had  been  the  one  to  summon  lucien  it  takes  several  minutes  before  she  can  turn  to  face  him.  to  look  him  in  the  eyes.  she  know,    deep  deep  deep     down,  that  he  isn't  responsible  for  what  happened  to  her  and  her  sisters.  but  it  is  still  hard  to  separate  him  from  the  memories  nonetheless.  the  bite  of  cold  as  the  liquid  within  the  cauldron  washed  over  her.  the  fear  and  hysteria  written  over  elain's  features  as  nesta  failed  to  save  her.    failed  another  sister.  again.

book  snapping  shut,  her  gaze  finally  lifts  to  meet  his.  his  searing  hot  while  she  burned  cold.    ❛ i  know. ❜    a  small  acknowledgment.  he'd  been  trying  to  make  up  for  his  role  in  their  demise  ever  since.     ❛ she  isn't  ready  to  see  you. ❜    nesta  clips,  more  out  of  habit  than  disdain,  to  protect  her  sister  from  her  would-be  mate.  it's  an  effort  to  keep  reminding  herself  that  she  isn't  in  fight  or  flight  mode  anymore.  she  is  safe.  she  is  healing.  and  this  is  just  another  step  in  her  journey.     ❛ but  that  doesn't  mean  we–  i–  can't  make  the  effort  to  get  to  know  you  now  that  you've  been  staying  in  the  night  court  for  some  time.  ❜
