My newest project, cool and pretty placemats!
Called myself fat for the first time in public. It was scary but it felt amazing!
Self correction is the sign of a good person. Not a bad one.

Trump Trigger
I don’t know who to talk to. I feel so alone right now. All this talk about Trump and his disgusting tape are bringing back so many feelings I though were buried. And especially now that women are coming out, claiming to have been assaulted by Trump, and the campaign is calling them liars... brings back memories of being assaulted as a teenager and no one listened to me. It hurt me so bad but even my own mom didn’t listen. She didn’t think it was a big deal that her boyfriend stuck his tongue in my mouth, the man I thought of in a fatherly way.
No one talks about it. Just like no one talks about how I was molested when I was 6. It’s like it didn’t even happen. But it did happen and it hurt. Even today I’m afraid of men and I have trouble telling anyone what’s going on in my life because it’s like no one cares.
And then I heard a lady on the radio say that the women who were assaulted by Trump shouldn’t have put themselves in that position and should stop acting like victims. I’ve been crying for half an hour. I can’t stop shaking. I didn’t want to be assaulted as a teen but it happened. I got out of the situation as fast as I could but it still affected me! It’s never the victim’s fault that they get abused or assaulted!! What’s wrong with this world that a WOMAN rationalizes a man’s abuse of another woman!?
I wish I had someone to talk to about this. But it’s politics, and I don’t want to get into a political fight.
Hey, I noticed you're an ex-vegetarian when I was exploring the Gary Taubes tag...if you haven't read it, I think you might enjoy "The Vegetarian Myth" by Lierre Keith.
I realize this is probably pretty old, but I thought you might appreciate an answer :) I have indeed read Lierre Keith’s book, twice in fact, and loved it. It’s amazing what I put myself through physically just for a political statement that turns out to have not been a very good one to begin with. Thanks so much for the suggestion!
So long, and thanks for all the fish
Hey guys! I just wanted to let any of you still following me to know that I've decided to leave tumblr. As much as I love the idea of tumblr, the truth is that I feel out of place here and I don't feel like it's a good fit for me.
I plan on still blogging about low-carb, keto, paleo diets, though. If you're still interested, you can stop on over to my new blog! Same title, same kind of content (eventually).
It's been fun, tumblr!
Vegetarian eggs
Have you guys ever heard of or seen vegetarian eggs? As someone who's living a low carb lifestyle, I buy a lot of eggs. Hubby and I go through at least three dozen eggs a week. I really wish I could spend a lot of money and get the best eggs possible. Eggs from free range, naturally fed, organic, happy chickens. Unfortunately, the price of those eggs in the store is roughly three times the price of the eggs we usually buy, and I haven't yet found a source for local eggs, which would really be the best option.
On a bit of a whim, I bought one dozen cage free, organic eggs from our local grocery store, because I wanted to do a taste off between them and the regular eggs. When I got home, I happened to notice that, not only were they cage free and organic, but they were also vegetarian.
So what the heck is a vegetarian egg? Well, let me tell you. That's an egg that comes from a chicken that eats only a vegetarian diet. Isn't that nice? The answer is yes, and no.
First, let's start with why it's not nice. Chickens aren't vegetarians. That's just all there is to it. In nature, chickens eat anything and everything that they come across. Seeds, clover, worms, dead things. Anything they come across that is even remotely edible. And this is important, because there are certain proteins in meat and animal products that chickens need to be healthy. And if they're not healthy, their eggs won't be either.
So if you see eggs that say they're cage free and also vegetarian, there's something a little wrong with this picture. You hear cage free, and you think the animals are out roaming the pasture, right? That's not entirely true. Although it's possible that they could be, most often "cage free" simply means there are no cages. Often times, the chickens are all gathered onto the floor of a barn, sometimes with the option of roosts, and usually packed so tightly that they may as well have cages.
Thus, the only thing these chickens have to eat is what the farmer gives them. And that's where the vegetarian eggs come in. They're fed a diet of 100% grains, which no chicken was ever meant to eat.
Ok, so I did say that a vegetarian egg is good as well. Why? Well, grocery store eggs almost always come from factory farming like the picture above (or from farms with a little cage for each chicken), and so they all eat a diet of grains. However, if the carton doesn't say that the eggs are vegetarian, there's a good chance that the chickens are eating grains mixed with some form of animal product. Great, right?
No, not really. Chicken feed with animal proteins in it can get those proteins from just about anywhere. Some of the sources include:
Downer cattle (cows that are too sick to stand)
The really gross parts of meat chickens
All kinds of animal poop, INCLUDING chicken poop!
(And here's one that really grossed me out).....Dead dogs and cats that have been put to sleep at animal shelters
So I think if you're going to buy grocery store eggs, it might actually be best to get vegetarian eggs. But it's certainly not the best option. If you can find pastured eggs in the store, that would be great, but I have yet to see anything like that.
So what option do you have? Well, look around where you live and see if anyone raises and sells eggs. Most likely, local eggs are either free range (they get to walk around someone's yard) or they're in a chicken coop and get to spend at least part of their time outside where they can gobble up bugs and weeds.
Where I grew up, in rural Pennsylvania, there were people raising chickens and selling eggs all over the place, and the price of a dozen eggs was hardly any higher than the grocery store. Although where I live in NY now should still be considered rural, there's a lot more city that farm land, and it's been hard to find eggs in these parts. I'd like to raise my own chickens someday, but I'm almost certain it's illegal to raise them inside the city limits, so it'll have to wait.
If you need more evidence that you should look into pastured, local, free range chickens, check out this picture. The egg on the left is from a grocery store. The egg on the right is a pastured, farm fresh egg.
One of the things I miss most of all, being a low carb eater, is biscuits, rolls, and sandwiches. My favorite biscuits are those cheesy garlicy kind you get out at restaurants like Ruby Tuesdays or Red Lobster. MMMM.
So when I came across this recipe at Linda's Low Carb for Cheddar Biscuits, I had to try them. The best part is that they're made with (a small amount) of coconut flour, which is much cheaper than almond flour. I'll admit that coconut flour has a grittier texture than almond flour, and you can't use it cup for cup to replace wheat flour in recipes (because it absorbs water like you wouldn't believe), but I still enjoy using it very much.
And what better way to use these awesome biscuits than to make a breakfasty egg and bacon sandwich?! OMG SO GOOD!
Hi! I was wondering, how did you pass the pattern to the Nyan cat cake? Beautiful cake by the way.
It was pretty easy. I first laid the pattern on a towel, and poked holes through each square with a toothpick. That should leave a bunch of raised bumps on the back. Then just lay the pattern on the cake and gently smooth over the entire area. Lift off, an you'll have a grid to work with :)
Nyan Cake
It took me all day, but here it is. My niece's birthday cake.
I give you.... the making of Nyan Cake!
Weight loss and a huge hill
I weighted myself this morning, and YAY! I'm down to 184.4! I haven't seen anything under 185 in so long that I wasn't sure I could even get there anymore. That tells me that I'm doing a great job both staying low carb and also only eating when I'm hungry. The best part is that I'm never deprived, and my craving for sweets has gone almost completely away.
However, I have a battle ahead of me today. It's my niece's birthday, and as the most crafty person in the family, I've been designated chief cake maker. This would be fine, except.... When I make cakes, I can't help but eat what I'm working with. First I have to taste the frosting to make sure I made it correctly. Then there's the extra cake that gets cut off the top to make it level. Then there's all that left over frosting... I have a very large hill to climb today to stay on track.
But even if I do well with the cake decorating, I'll still have to actually eat cake at the party. Oy.
AND THEN her boyfriend's birthday is in like four days!! So I'll have to go through this whole battle all over again. It wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't doing as well as I am. I haven't eaten any wheat in the whole month of January, and I haven't had any sugar in over a week.
I guess what I'll do is just try to behave myself and only eat a small piece of cake at the party tonight. The left over cake ingredients are just getting thrown away.
I hope.
My crafty distractions
So I've been kind of stressed out lately, with trying to buy a house for my mom before her lease is up in March. To distract myself, I've been very crafty. Like, extremely crafty, lol. Here's what I've been up to.
I bought myself a new camera for Christmas, one small enough to just throw in my bag and go. Well, I felt a little uncomfortable just throwing it in my bag, so I decided it needed a camera case. And since the camera itself is pink, I thought a pink case would be perfect :) I eyeballed this pattern but didn't actually follow it. Just used it as a guide
Shown without camera for obvious reasons.
I also bought myself a Kindle Fire HD for Christmas. I was going to get an ipad, but decided that $500 was kind of an outrageous amount of money to spend on something I consider a toy (also, hubby has an ipad, and they become uncomfortably heavy after a while). Anyway, I thought about buying the official Amazon case for my fire, but it was like $45, and since I'm cheap and I wanted to be crafty anyway, I decided I'd make one. I used this pattern, only adjusted slightly to fit my kindle.
Then my mom came over, and I showed her my kindle case, and she asked if I would make something like that for my dad. So I said, sure! And then finished this in one day. I didn't follow the pattern exactly with this one, and it has a more quilted look.
I have a few other projects in the wings, too, and I'll be sure to post those pictures when I get them done :) One last picture for you. This is my kitty, Spices, practicing her cute pose.
Weighed myself this morning!
And I'm down to 185 :) It's not much of a weight loss, but considering we just got over Christmas, New Year's, and the first day of my period (when I crave large amounts of chocolate), the fact that I've lost any weight is astounding.
That means I'm down a total of 10 pounds since I started eating this way! I know that doesn't seem like a lot, but I've also gained muscle because the shape of my body has changed a lot.
I'm really dedicated to eating well every day now. I haven't eaten wheat for weeks. And although I have had sugar here and there, I haven't had a lot of it (except, like I said, the first day of my period). It's getting a lot easier to stick to this way of eating as time goes on. I don't have crazy cravings like I used to, and I even find certain foods kind of gross. Like I walked into my in-law's house the other day, and someone had just made toast, and it smelled really yucky to me. Like, ew.
My biggest problem is that I eat out of habit or boredom. Or lately, because I'm stressed out. Yesterday and today, I've tried to eat only when hungry, and I feel pretty good about how things are going so far. I'm also trying to make sure I incorporate lots of fat into my meals. I just ate a spoonful of virgin coconut oil, which is kind of weird at first, but tastes pretty darn good (if you like coconut, anyway).
Now I just need to convince myself to get more active.
Oh my GOD
I posted a little rant about dieting and eating disorders the other day, where I talked about how calorie counting can really easily lead to obsessiveness and eating disorders. But calorie counting is promoted by doctors as the only way to lose weight outside of surgery.
Well now doctors have a brand new way for people to lose weight. It's called AspireAssit. You know what it does? It's a tube placed into your stomach that pumps food out so you can eat normal meals and still lose weight. Doesn't that sound great?
The first thought that came to my mind when I read about this was WHAT THE HELL!? Are people so mislead about food and diet that they think they have no choice but to A) punish themselves on a low calorie, low fat, zero taste diet B) get bariatric surgery, or C) USE A STOMACH PUMPING MACHINE!?
I'm so very disappointed right now. I'm disappointed in the people who invented this machine (which includes the inventor of the Segway) for taking advantage of a misinformed, desperate population. I'm disappointed in doctors for thinking this is a better way to lose weight than, say, eating whole natural foods and giving up sugar and processed crap. I'm disappointed that there's obviously a market for this machine and that there will be probably millions of people who want to use it without asking themselves, "What do I do once the weight is lost?"
If you ask me, it's assisted bulimia, and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.
