Do you have any tips you would give to beginners? (Sketching or colouring, etc) 🥺 Your art is so lovely

...I didn't mean this to be this long but I got excited and I wanted to explain what I know--AAAAA!!! (´。＿。｀)

These are some things I learned from my art classes. [TL;DR at the bottom.]

Disclaimersss: (1.) I know you said "beginner," but I'm going to assume you don't wanna just see "look up references," and "just practice lol." (2.) I'm an art student; not a teacher. (4.) I'm assuming you want to do art professionally, and you're looking to do something similar to what I do. If you just want to have fun, that's ok too!! (5.) You can always ask other artists for their input. This stuff works for me and may not apply to you.

General ✱ Don't learn too many things at once. You're slowing yourself down and for what!! Nothing!!!!

✱ Learning how to observe is just as important in making art as actually putting pen on paper. (Brush on canvas? Pen on tablet?)

✱ The purposes of Study/Practice are (1) to learn how to understand how things work, (2) to develop muscle memory and hand-eye coordination. Don't stress over how to make pretty things for now, just learn how they work.

✱ Simplify what you're observing. You don't have to study all a being's bones and wrinkles to understand how a body bends and twists.

✱ Art is about having good taste. [And there isn't one singular Correct one.] Know what you want. Make what you want.

Taste is something that develops over time, so if you don't know what you want now, that's normal! Making art is about consuming art as well. Develop your taste by watching shows, reading comics, etc.

If you're struggling to like what you're making now, that may be because your taste is different to what you're doing. Which leads us to the next tip...

✱ Compare your work with other artists' work... *realistically.* You can learn a lot by studying not just real life, but professional artists' work. They developed that stuff for years and you don't have to. Heck, if you're interested, don't just study art styles you like! You can learn a lot by studying other forms of art.

Sketching ✱ Sketch at least twice! Once to do composition, twice to add details! (Sometimes more, for stuff outside your comfort zone.) Trying to do both at once can consume more time because your mind is split trying to make something pretty and read well at the same time. Breathe!!!!! [Final comic here.]

I know I sketched using circles in the above example, but I do that because the art and poses involved are right in my comfort zone. (It's the same reason I only sketched the hands once.) *For beginners,* and for making work that's more complex, I strongly suggest sketching with more angular shapes! For two reasons: (1) forces you to think about perspective, (2) forces you to make choices. [Final art here.]

But why am I making you make choices? Because confidence is appealing! That's why clean lineart is so pretty! By forcing yourself to make clear choices, you are learning how to make confident lines.

[I learned coloring almost entirely self-taught (basically everything except Color Theory) so that's something I might do on a separate post, me-thinks.]

TL;DR - Basically: Learn the simple stuff so you can use the simple stuff to build the complex stuff.

Focus on one thing at a time.

Observe things! Learn about things! Making art involves a lot of understanding how things work. Making art involves consuming art also.

Make what you want!!!

Sketch multiple times.

Sketch with angular shapes.

Confidence is pretty. Confidence is Good.

Now though, they are old gods, powerful, the fact few have invoked them in millennia leaving their power to grow, even as the majority of their worshippers forgot. It's not a surprise though- they too have forgotten. It wouldn't be fair to use your godly powers for petty things- and it's easy to forget they're there after so long without use. They live without them, but if you look closely, the clues still linger.🍬

Now this is a concept I like. I hear so much about gods that fade away when their followers' praises cease, but the idea that instead they would grow like an unpruned garden of power in the absence of attention... it's fascinating to me. I wonder how big the reaction will be when a Hermit finally tries to use their power again and it comes out many times stronger?
