With all the tragedy at the end of the episode, I feel like we haven’t talked at all about that scene in which Hook stopped Regina from controlling Emma (which was very similar to him stopping Snow, although done in a less brutal way with his mother in law). I think we should give this a proper mini meta, since I believe it is very important in order to understand better why he’s so mad at her right now.
I’ll state first (again) that I’m on her side here! And that I would have done the same!
But yesterday I was re watching the episode and this moment came in which Hook physically stopped Regina from using the dagger on Emma and then immediately wanted to know if she was ok.
When I first saw the episode, I was mostly mad at Regina, but after seeing it again knowing how this episode ended, I realized that they wanted to create a similar situation to the one in 5x01 (first gif) because they really wanted to emphasize how Emma’s will and maintaining her free will was important to Hook in order to create the anti parallel to it at the end.
This is something I always admired about him and I nearly kissed the screen in 5x01 when he said that it has to be her choice. Hook once more has made sure that Emma’s freedom is intact. That she’s the one in control over her life. I didn’t see any of the characters defending that concept so radically as he did. He physically snatched the dagger from Regina’s hands, while Snowing were taking the more gentle approach. That means that this value of keeping Emma in control was highly important to him, and that also means that it is a value that important to him in general.
Now with this in mind, think of how the episode ended from his point of view. For him, Emma did to him what Regina (and before that Snow) were trying to do to Emma before he stopped them. She was taking the control over his life. She was also using the sword for it (which parallels to the dagger), while doing so. So in his mind, the person he worked so hard to defend her free will, has took his and ignored it.
I still think he would have done the same in her place, considering the fact that he didn’t mind controlling her with the dagger himself when she disappeared. But you can understand maybe better why he saw that as such a big betrayal because obviously that wasn’t his will to become the DO and he lost control over that decision.
