ohhhh my god. oh my goddd
Whatever you do, do NOT think about Data at his friends bedsides as they die. Over and over again, every single one of them. Until he’s all alone.
I read a fanfic where Data watched Geordi die, but he copied his memory engrams and proceeded to spend the next hundred years transferring Geordi’s memories into an android body, per Geordi’s request so that Data doesn’t spend eternity alone ughhhhhhh.
Also have to add that in said fic, Picard joins Q in the continuum so there’s that
what kills me about data's character arc is that he's an autism allegory and the arc ends with him Fixing His Autism. like no shut up he was fine the way he was!!! he wanted to be human because from the moment he was born he was told he would always be lesser for not being one! but he was wonderful and conscious and complex and not so human but one would think in a universe of millions of species that Human shouldn't be the highest ideal
A lot of trek bros™️ get mad at me when I criticize the writing of Data and the eventual emotion chip plot because they’re like “well he said at the very beginning that he wanted to be human”. Um no, he was told right when he was activated that he was no more than a machine ie, not good enough. That’s why he has the notion that he should try to become human.
These people are basically saying “yeah Data isn’t ideal if he’s more of an android than a human and he should have more human-like emotions so he can be accepted” and as an autistic person who highly relates to Data, it makes me so upset.
I was told at a young age that me being autistic was a terrible thing, so i resented myself FOR YEARS and tried to be as neurotypical as possible. But a lot of people saw through the mask and it made it difficult for me to find friends.
The emotion chip (and I guess Picard s3 if we REALLY want to go there even though it’s not canon) pisses me off because it basically reverses all progress with Data trying to understand HIMSELF as an Android and says “yay! You have emotions now! Now you can truly be like one of us” which is almost the equivalent to those Facebook “autism moms” complaining about their child and praying for a “cure for autism”. It is so triggering to me because it not only invalidates Data’s growth, it invalidates mine as well.
The Wesley and Jaxa dynamic to me is like… so Jaxa’s bajoran, her life has not been the greatest to say the least, she had to claw and scrape her way to the academy and to starfleet and she actually manages to get there and things are going well for her and she’s on this elite team and she’s not just in starfleet she’s The Future of Starfleet. And then this spoiled brat who grew up using the federation’s flagship as his own personal playground also gets added to this team and he’s nice but you kind of hate him because how come he got all of this stuff he just got to waltz in here he hasn’t had to work for it the same way you have. But then time goes on and you actually get to know this guy and you learn that even if it’s in a completely different way to you he’s one of the few people here who understands the costs of war and loss so there’s this weird camaraderie between the two of you because even if you’re coming at it from completely different angles you both Get It in a way very few other people do. And then you kill one of your other friends together and you feel guilty about it, you both do, but you can’t go back to your life before which is what would happen to you if you got found out so you agree to keep it a secret you all agree to the cover up. But then he goes rogue and sells you all out and he’s selfish and a brat and how could he do this to you does he not understand what he’s sending you back to? But then you’re not expelled but your life is ruined anyway and you’re back to clawing and scraping for everything and none of you talk anymore. And then you finally make it through all of this bullshit and you’ve graduated and you’re in starfleet but you’re posted to the ship he grew up on and you’re surrounded by all of this stuff from his stories. And his mother is there giving you your medical checkups and you know that Captain Picard like Shakespeare and horses and you know Commander Riker likes poker and jazz music and you know Counsellor Troi loves chocolate and has a weird relationship with her mother and you know Commander Data likes painting and Sherlock and they all vaguely know you but you can never acknowledge it because means acknowledging The Incident which you’re not doing because you’re moving on from that even if your environment refuses to let you do so. You will never be able to move on from it while you’re there but you have nowhere else to go nowhere else will take you so you try to please these people as best you can even if it means killing yourself to do it.
And then she dies and for Wesley it’s like you finds out and she died on the ship you grew up on and the people who you trusted with your life so many times just let her die and it’s not fair. And you’re already miserable and dead inside and then Jaxa dies and they just let her. Picard let her die just like he let your father die. And your father is dead and Tasha is dead and Josh is dead and now Jaxa’s dead and it’s all because of goddamn starfleet and it all feels so meaningless and they all just let her die and what’s even the point anymore?
the events of “lower decks” (not to be confused with the show) definitely helped Wesley make his decision to drop out of the academy. Yeah yeah he had that vision with his father saying “yeah this Starfleet thing? You don’t have to do it anymore it’s okay” but everything from the nova squadron cover up to jaxa’s death played a huge part in Wesley’s decision in the end.
I have a feeling his mom told him about what happened to Jaxa and it left a really bad taste in his mouth. If it left a bad taste for Mariner, it definitely left one for Wesley.
Guys…………. In the episode contagion data just sticks his arm into the iconian gateway thingy without thinking or knowing if it would hurt him….. there’s that one time in that one episode that I don’t remember the name of where he just called himself expendable specifically because he’s an android……….. half the time he’s not considered sentient by those outside the enterprise…………..he gets (essentially) misgendered constantly (people calling him it/its) (I know I know it was that 90s and ppl called him that in the show because they don’t consider him sentient but like. Consider)…………. he literally says he might not have a mind to read in the episode tin man…………. Not even getting into the books like ghost ship etc……………………. He didn’t have a friend at all until he met Geordi……… that’s like 20 years……..he entered the academy at 3 years old……………..his daughter literally dies because of one man’s inability to take no for an answer and the man never gets punished………….datas only reason (pretty much) for being given any amount of respect for much of his life was because he was very very very very useful…………in encounter at farpoint he apologizes for talking to much (commenting on scientific phenomena [his literal job is mostly Science])…………………… he ALMOST KILLS HIS BEST FRIEND because he got his lifelong dream (he already had emotions but whatevs)………………..he also got kidnapped that one time………………………….he had to GO TO COURT to prove he’s sentient…………………………and he was semi-canonically suicidal in the past (some stupid android equivalent because the writers are COWARDS /hj)…………… guys his mental health MUST be shit. Bro is NOT coping. Whump/Angst writers take notes /silly
In tng, Data is repeatedly compared to the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. Which, yeah, is a really good comparison. He pretty much is the tin man, but in space.
However, at the end of the Wizard of Oz, the Wizard doesn’t give the tin man a heart. He doesn’t go around looking at life with the all-new wonder of emotion. The Wizard gives him a heart-shaped knickknack and tells him he already had a heart the whole time!
SO WHY THE FUCK DID DATA GET THE STUPID FUCKING EMOTION CHIP?!?!?!?!?
as much as I want to not acknowledge the last TNG movie, this really helps rectify all the damage that it did. I really wish more people knew about this. As much as I hate the movie, I hate the fact it bombed in the box office and caused any ideas for future Star Trek films (excluding the AOS ones) to be scrapped. I’m tired of sad Data edits. I’m tired of people saying his life ended on that fuckass shit tar. Or that he came back in a fucked up body in Picard. This is so much better than anything they came up with.
TLDR: Data came back after the events of N3mesis thanks to Q
I’m going to be extremely blunt because I’m sorry but i disagree
in Picard season 1, did the Federation apparently imposing a “synth ban” and having B4 dismantled protect what happened in Measure of a Man? Is that any better than Data being brought back in b4’s body?
Maybe I just never really cared for B4 because I only loved Data and I knew what B4’s purpose was in the movie. I mean, if a 5th TNG movie happened if the last damn movie didn’t bomb, Data would be back! His memories were put in B4 for a reason!
Maybe they should’ve elaborated more on what happened to B4 in the book because it’s most likely B4 remained inside Data just like Lal did. Like it sucks but before it all happened, the Enterprise had just lost their best officer, Picard’s soon to be First Officer, their friend!! B4 was NEVER going to replace Data, and it’s not because he’s not capable, he’s just not Data. I don’t want to spew the “needs of the many outweigh the few” argument but that’s what it is.
Q was probably doing a favor because several years beforehand, Data had saved Q’s life on the enterprise, back when Q got kicked out of the continuum and was without powers. Q was mourning Data too.
I’m sorry, but if I had to pick between Data and B4, I’d pick Data any day.

Thank you, The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard, for making Captain Data happen. And also having Geordi be his first officer. They definitely got married on that ship.
'Captain, I now have the antimatter, and I am moving towards the opening at the end of the lab.' - data
'The next time distortion should occur within seconds.
Geordi, begin countdown on my mark.' - data
'Now.' - data
'Captain, there appear to be three of us.' - data 3
'Should I drop the antimatter or wait for one of you?' - data 1
'Only one of us is at the correct time continuum.' - data 3
'Which one?' - data 1
'Me. It's me.' - data 2

I like them a lot okay
I got so upset thinking about the Picard series i just stayed up reading data fanfics while listening to angry Taylor swift songs
first episode of picard: oh yeah okay data has a daughter sure second episode of picard: *proceeds to show exactly what WASN'T supposed to happen because of Data's trial in Measure of a Man*
oh my god and dont even get me started on them having datas eye and skin color. this is like new levels of fucked up i didn't even know existed. i am dying.
Literally just makes this series non canon because how do they fuck up so hard with that? The federation would NEVER do that after measure of a man and Picard would’ve NEVER allowed it to happen.
I absolutely abhor this concept of a series and I’ll never understand the praise for it. Ever
Ask yourselves this:
If a bad movie bombed in the box office, did it really happen?
I’m actually gonna frow up
If hating Bruce Maddox was an Olympic sport i would be a gold medalist
DATA’S A ROBOT? I THOUGHT HE JUST HAD JAUNDICE
This snapped me out of a bad depression slump. Thank you
I think a lot about how the Federation imposed a synth ban after Data had served them for 30+ years.
What would they have done to him if he'd still been alive?
I don't think it would have gone well for him tbh
I have thought about the same thing. B-4 was dismantled as part of the ban, no matter what Jurati says about him being low functioning and deactivated because he couldn't learn. That was just an excuse.
Would the same have happened to Data? It's hard to say but as the order was to deactivate ALL synths I can't see how he would avoid it
Am I the only one who thinks everything that happened in that series isn’t/shouldn’t be canon? The whole idea of a synth ban really pisses me off because they completely fucking ignore what happened in Measure of A Man, you know the trial that gave Data RIGHTS. But nooo, in this fucked up timeline, this “synth ban” happens and Picard, the man that helped get Data rights, is an admiral and ALLOWS it to happen.
The federation would never allow this to happen. I know the federation isn’t perfect but they would not go this low after seeing Data as a PERSON.
That’s why I can’t accept this series. Sorry
