Call for more education for males about the female body
I continuously find myself in situations where I feel as though there is a huge stigma around menstruation or more simply periods, why do we feel the need to hide the pads/tampons in our bags and discreetly rush into the bathroom with them? I find a lot of this stigma comes from men, sorry guys but it's true. I am not talking about all guys here but I have been told on a few occasions not to talk about these things in 'mixed company' and yes I get it, there is a time and a place for everything (other nurses will know that some times we don't adhere to these rules) but honestly the female body is amazing and we should not be shamed for something that is a natural occurrence for most women at some stage in their life. Going to an all girls high school we often talked openly about these things, and in a 'Personal development' or sex ed class if you will, we learned about female AND male puberty. Speaking with students of the same year from our brother school, an all boys school - the focus was more on male puberty. Why is this? Does this happen in other boys schools, not just in Australia. I would like to see less stigma towards the female body and more celebration.Ā
