I should make little intro posts for all my "canon" Dragon Age timelines, but this will be short for now

had a dream that the dragon age series got made into a movie, and origins already sucked really bad and tanked at the box office, but 2 was already almost finished with production, so they just shadow dropped it onto shitty streaming services. And more than anything, that felt like exactly what would, or maybe could only, happen to dragon age 2 as a movie to me. Jerry Trainor played Hawke.

i wanna hear your thoughts about how dai fumbled the themes of religion 👀

okay i feel like i said that really definitively when actually i haven't played dai for a year so my thoughts are scattered and it's hard to point to specific lines 😭 but essentially it's the beginning of where the series stopped being grounded which made its politics pretty much dissipate imo. i have endless hate for settings that make gods real characters that we can interact with, and the way the game portrays dalish religion/gods is ofc extremely iffy given the way they borrowed from real irl religions

but for andrastrianism specifically i think it completely moves away from the rest of the series' criticisms of religion - in any game the absence of criticism would be kind of annoying as christianity's #1 hater, but when the previous games portrayed the chantry as a colonialist institution that enables every kind of abuse (with da2 frequently emphasising sexual abuse)? it feels extremely nasty. imo it comes mostly from the game's refusal to let the player feel like a bad person, eg; neutering the mage/templar conflict so the abuses of mages aren't bad enough to make a new player who chose to side with the templars will feel guilty etc. Basically most of my criticisms of dav apply but because dai keeps attempting to engage with religion it's both better AND worse

THIS. Inquisiton doesnt want you to feel bad so they refuse to actually investigate how bad, as an institution both the chantry and the inquistion are. and it could have been a compelling arc for an andrastian inquisitor to deal with the idea of how to reconcile your own faith vs what the insitution does. and like prev's tags pointed out, you cant ever complain about the fact that hey you're pretty much being held hostage (and especially for non human inquisitors). you are never allowed to criticize and if you play a faithful inquisitor, its almost a sin to speak out against the chantry in certain conversations.

and then also. for a game so focused on religion, the companions who arent andrastian are weridly non religious. we have no dalish companions so we have no one who worships the elven gods, the one dwarf hates the ancestors anf the qunari guy's arc is literally about how he wants to lowkey leave the qun (given that that is his best ending) and refuses to actually talk about the qun. which....sure, we've always had more andrastian companions than anything but also. we had merrill, who constalty talked about her gods, sten literally quotes the qun in ever other convo about it, and thought oghren and sigrun dont necessarily talk about the ancestors, we literally go to orzammar and we get to see how the worship of them and the paragons work first hand. and then even the andrastian characters depending on their background were able to give us different perspectives - alistair was critical of the chantry, leliana was ostracized for having different interpreations, fenris does have a belief in the maker, but in dai, all the andrastian characters, with a fw exceptions, kinda just. think the same. no one is critical, no one really questions things, they all seem to agree that the chantry is good and necessary. DAI is incapable of separating personal faith from the actual institution, so everyone has to be agreeable to everything. characters arent allowed to believe in anything else and if the inquisitor expresses that they have different believes, you better keep that shit down (which btw is smthg josie literally says to an adaar inky who expressed a desire to join the qun but anyways).

No because you don't understand. Flemeth stole the golden MIRROR. she stole a symbol of Morrigans individuality and personhood, something that would allow Morrigan to look at herself and say 'thats me'. She smashed it on the ground and it fractured into a thousand tiny pieces, and her daughter wept over it.

The lesson was not about the futility and lack of use of shiny objects, the lesson was about control. It was about stripping Morrigan not only of possessions but of ways to identify herself. Because Morrigan wasn't being raised to be herself. She was being raised to act as a host, a body, a sack of meat, something that personhood could reside within, not a person with agency herself.

i love posts like this bc it's like a fun litmus test for racism and the (often willful) ignorance that perpetuates it. the staple crops of peoples who were victims of colonization and genocide have been so far removed from them that pop culture and fictional genres more strongly associate things like potatoes with the colonizer rather than the colonized people they originate from, but there's a whole bunch of comments that would rather get snarky about a joke 'nitpicking' at the fantasy genre than spend any time thinking critically about that.

What about a canon AU where Hawke needs to somehow buy her way into Kirkwall after fleeing the Blight with her family, but working for the smugglers isn't enough? What if Varric needs a wife ASAP before Bianca's family kills him and he hears about this newly washed-up refugee from a formerly well-respected noble bloodline who's been working odd jobs for questionable people to keep herself and her family afloat? What if he decides to take a look for himself and watches her for a few days and realises she's EXACTLY what he needs to deal with dwarven politics? What if he makes her an offer she can't refuse and they're married before the day is over and the Hawke family is moved into Varric's mansion? What if Dragon Age 2 becomes a green card AU?
