I wish all my writers a happy new year. May all your stories finally be written, sentences be completed, emotions be evoked with beautifully crafted words, readers be moved to tears, the urge to create be satisfied.

"YA books are brain rotting at any age" okay I know booktok is annoying but please get offline
For real though I may make jokes but YA is great and an absolutely valuable resource for tweens/teens and isn't completely represented by the love triangle romances it's become associated with (which tbh who cares if it does have that). YA includes Holes by Louis Sachar, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. And y'know I grew up reading a bunch of Sarah Dessen books, the Flowers in the Attic series, Thirteen Reasons Why, Twilight, Maximum Ride, etc etc and even though I probably wouldn't recommend those books now, they nurtured a love of reading that followed me afterwards!!! I'm grateful that people eventually realized that there is a tumultuous period between childhood and adulthood and gave that period of life a space in literature
Stop hating on YA and just admit you hate teenagers, especially teen girls.
People act like YA is a genre when it's not. It's an age category and teenagers deserve to have books of all genres specifically geared towards them and their interests and what they want to read. If you're an adult and you want to enjoy YA, fine! Lots of people enjoy things that weren't created specifically with them in mind. But if we get rid of YA, because a bunch of adults decided that books that weren't created for them were bad, then teenagers have to choose between middle-grade novels and adult novels, and that's a really big jump to make.
" one of my favorite things in this world is how we pick up little habits and phrases from the people we love. it's no wonder our hearts become so easily broken when people leave. i still say that one phrase my cousin used to say a few years ago. i still make ramen the way a friend taught me to in 8th grade. i discovered my favorite book series of all time from someone i don't talk to anymore. you collect so many pieces of people as you go about this life. you are a mosaic of everyone you've ever loved, even for a heartbeat."

FRIENDLY REMINDER THAT DOING YOUR BEST DOES NOT MEAN WORKING YOURSELF TO THE POINT 0F A MENTAL BREAKDOWN.
I remember reading a study once that asked people in their 90s to rank the best to worst decades of their life, and the overwhelming majority were like “my 70s were the best” and ranked their teens and twenties as near the worst, and I think about that a lot when people act like if they’re not living their best life at 25 they’ve lost their chance. like nah, the longer you’ve had to learn about yourself, the more you can love yourself. there’s no expiration date on joy until you’re dead
y’know as much as self-sacrifice gets made out to be super noble and shit in a lot of fiction, i am. very much more in favor of the message “you can live. you can want to live. it is a good thing to want to live, and it is a good thing that you are alive. you don’t have to feel guilty for being alive.”
idk it’s what i really needed to hear when shit got bad and honestly it’s what i still need to hear sometimes and it’s what i want the people i care about to believe about themselves.
“Most of our childhood is stored not in photos, but in certain biscuits, lights of day, smells, textures of carpet.”

the worst thing about writing is that you have to write things in order for them to have been written. absolute insanity.
I want to write. I have ideas. I open document. I type four of the worst sentences ever created in the english language. I daydream the rest of the scene. I close document.

How to interact with a wheelchair user
(a list of do's and don'ts)
Don'ts
Don't touch our chair without permission
Don't crouch down to talk to us
Don't tell us how brave we are
Don't ask us to 'do a trick'
Don't push us unless we ask
Don't say "it's not too bad" when we complain about inaccessibility
Don't have a go at us or call us fake for standing/walking (ambulatory wheelchair users to exist)
Don't ask us what is wrong with us or why we need the chair
Don't do stuff for us
Don't ask for a go in the chair
Do's
Do be kind
Do treat us like a human being
Do move out of the way if there is little space or a narrow path
Do ask if we need help
Do talk to us like any other human being
Do be supportive
Do ask us if you want to sit down, we are usually happy to move somewhere with seating
Do speak to us, not our carer or service dog
Do ask appropriate questions i.e. how accessibility can be improved, what we think about the weather, if we caught the game last night
Do reblog this so other people know how to interact with us!
