hello malevolent fandom does anyone know what year/s the podcast takes place? both blackstone and threshold? i know its early(-mid?) 30s but does anyone know a precise year? ok thank u love u
Blackstone takes place in 1934, starting in late August or early September and ending in early December 1934 (there are exact dates mentioned in S4)
Blackstone S5 takes place in an alternative timeline medieval England circa 1250s (likely post-1255)
Threshold takes place in October 1935

There is a little bit of Malevolent-specific Nyarlathotep lore!
A version of Nyarlathotep shows up in the events of Call of Cthulhu: The Witch’s Mark (as one of the people seeking the Crimson Stone that the Butcher stole on behalf of Senator Christian), and a version of Nyarlathotep also shows up (and even interacts with the player characters) in Call of Cthulhu Game 2, as he was trying to track down a kid who had touched the Gray Stone and received a vision of the location of the Blackstone

I have good news! Harlan is planning on creating a physical book filled with the Laurence Holder stories (a.k.a. some of his original Call of Cthulhu games reworked to have Laurence Holder at the center of them). If the link doesn't work, this is what the caption says:

I didn’t think Malevolent advertises as updating every other week?
The public Malevolent feed updates approximately once per month, and the Patreon feed updates weekly.
To detail it more thoroughly: Malevolent releases to the patrons in small 10-15 minute “chapters” every week (and I do mean every week, Harlan has never skipped a week since Malevolent started in April 2020, with only one exception when he delayed releasing the final chapter of series 1 so it could be released to both the public and patrons at exactly the same time). At the end of each chapter, the patrons are presented with a choice for Arthur to make, and the patrons vote on two or more options with the winning result being written into the next chapter as the decision Arthur made.
Five of these chapters (spanning 5 weeks of real-time to make) are stitched together and released to the public as a public “Part”. Consequently, Malevolent releases monthly to the public with the occasional “skip” month, whenever the public catches up with the patrons.
The end of 2022 severely kicked my ass health-wise, so I decided to start the new year off by binging a podcast. And uhhhh Malevolent is really good you guys 👀

Everyone talking about invictuscon artist alley. Where is it. Where is invictuscon. I dont even know what invictuscon is but everyone is talking about it. Im am. So confussed. I understand it conceptually but?? Help??
InvictusCon is a once yearly event typically held in the latter half of March. This year’s InvictusCon (2026) was March 27-29.
InvictusCon is a digital convention featuring live-streamed remote panels, usually hosted by Ren Brooke, a large number of one-shot TTRPG tables with volunteer Game Masters using many different systems (D&D 5E and Call of Cthulhu are popular, but systems like Everyone is John, 10 Candles and others are also represented), public game servers for Minecraft and VEIN, an artist alley, and private patron-only events.
All of it is hosted on the official Invictus Stream discord server.
To answer your specific question about “where is the artist alley?”
The artist alley, when active during a convention, is a category of channels in the official Discord server (which thanks to Discord updates in recent years, you have to go into your settings and elect to see once they go live). Instead of a physical booth, each artist has their very own channel where they can talk with anyone stopping by, and where they show off their merch and link to their online stores so you can buy prints, dolls, stickers, keychains and whatever else they might make.
At the end of the convention, all those channels are deleted and vanish until next year.

That’s because Malevolent started out as a one-man Call of Cthulhu campaign masquerading as a fully narrative podcast. Sort of.
The creator of Malevolent, Harlan Guthrie, prior to making Malevolent, had been the founder of a YouTube channel that primarily played TTRPGs as a livestream every Wednesday night. Although he ran and played in games from many systems, he was particularly fond of his custom worldbuilding for his Call of Cthulhu campaigns. These older campaigns form much of the backstory for Malevolent.
When he and his wife began podcasting (beginning with their D&D actual play podcast - Dice Shame), Harlan decided to try creating a sort of sequel to his old CoC games which didn’t require organizing multiple people for a traditional CoC campaign, and thus: Malevolent.
In the beginning of the show, the mechanics of CoC are still more clearly present, as Harlan initially intended to keep character sheets and stats and so on for Arthur, but he’d later decide to move to a more fully narrative creative process and many of the gamified elements (the dice rolls, the sanity loss sound effect) would disappear.
However, the Patreon CYOA aspect still remains, even today, by asking patrons of the show to vote on what Arthur should do next approximately 4 times per public episode.

Can someone explain to me why Blackstone is connected to Shub-Niggurath??? I'm on Call of Cthulhu Game 1 Part 3 and I've listened to almost every COC game that I could find (yes, I started with the recent ones), but I still don't understand why they're linked
Shub-Niggurath wasn’t really related to the Blackstone.
The events of Call of Cthulhu Game 1 are related to how John ended up in the book that Arthur would eventually receive. A bit more tangentially, Shub’s demise, which is orchestrated and executed during the events of Call of Cthulhu Game 1, inspired Kayne’s decision to try to kill Azathoth and usurp his place as the dreamer of all reality.
Also tangentially, the Three Soldiers, who were celebrated as legendary seekers of the Blackstone (and the other stones) by the Order of the Fallen Star (despite all three actually being double agents seeking to prevent the Order or likeminded individuals from gaining access to any of the stones) got wrapped up in Shub-Niggurath’s machinations when one of the three soldiers fell into truly worshipping her and betrayed the other two by attempting to summon Shub into our reality in 1255. That attempt failed, leaving Shub’s herald (the Black Goat) tied to an artifact, all of the Three Soldiers dead, and only the betrayer soldier’s apprentice alive to try to complete the Shub ritual the next time the stars aligned 666 years later.
Kayne briefly explains this in Intermezzo.
The stones don’t appear in the Call of Cthulhu games until Witch’s Mark, where the plot revolves around Senator Christian stealing the Crimson stone from an agent working for Nyarlathotep-in-disguise and then Nyarlathotep hiring the Butcher to kidnap the Senator’s daughter to force him to give it back. This is also when Charlie Dowd sends the Gray stone to 13 Mosby Avenue, expecting Roland to receive it, but unknowingly having it end up in the possession of Sammy Wiley (the kid acting as the current PI partners’ secretary).
Call of Cthulhu Game 2 follows up with Nyarlathotep trying to pursue both the Obelisk (being transported secretly back to Egypt to prevent it being too close to Leerie, where it could be used in the ritual to summon or kill Azathoth) and Sammy, who had touched the Gray stone and inadvertently learned the location of the Blackstone.
