You can’t ‘skip’ being kind to yourself. That’s not how it works. You cannot spread love and good and positivity into this world and expect it all back ten fold if you’re not even extending that own love and kindness to yourself. Practicing kindness and love and empathy and all of those things have to include yourself for neuroplasticity to actually take root. Your brain is constantly learning from what you repeatedly show it. And if you’re not showing it, yourself, any of what you give to others, how do you expect it to understand that you, too, are worthy of the same things that you give? You cannot plant flowers in everybody else’s garden while simultaneously saying to yourself that your own soil is unworthy of water or care of any kind. You cannot build a life rooted in love while making yourself the exception to every kindness you offer everyone else. Please do not teach yourself that pain is what you deserve. You deserve to be included in the love you give.

Surround yourself with individuals with a mindset rooted in curiosity and playfulness. The ones who refuse to let go of hope and who want nothing more than the freedom to play in this big, beautiful world. The ones who will absolutely find a way to do that in whatever way they can. These are the kind of people who remind the world how to be alive, and they will remind you too. I am so very serious when I say to choose people who make things fun no matter the circumstance, no matter the situation. Choose the people who make you want to be silly, who make you want to smile at very mundane things. You must be around people in this life that allow your soul to play and dance without constantly feeling the need to be guarded. And the best part about it all, you’ll start to feel yourself becoming that kind of person too even when you’re not in the same room as them.
