Farewell Tumblr

When I first read about the Tumblr project as part of my adolescent development studies I have to admit, I was rather anxious as I had no knowledge or experience on how to use this website. My first stop was YouTube, watching any video I could find about navigating the site. After playing around a little bit, I think I got the hang of it rather quickly. 

Reading and researching for things to post was a lot easier than I thought it would be. In conjunction with other students posts, I have learned a lot. From simple little facts about adolescents, cute new quotes (I even saved one as my wallpaper on my laptop) and even some of those dry scholarly articles went in and made sense. Opinion articles were my favourite to read and post. Would I use any of them in an assignment as an official source? Probably not! But to know other people share the same thoughts as me was somewhat comforting, especially on the really big issues. It was even fun when I stumbled across things I didn't agree with and stating/sharing why. 

I hope in the future I get the opportunity to revisit Tumblr and perhaps do another project just like this one. A very creative way of learning and connecting with not only my classmates but the world.

Explicit page done 'out of respect'

Otago student who created a Facebook page showing explicit photos of women says he didn't mean to objectify anyone.

Following on from my previous post... this is another example of why we should be educating adolescents (And even adults) about the dangers of how sex and technology mix and end in disastrous consequences.

Sexting is just the internet-age equivalent of an adolescent fumble behind the bike sheds, according to US research.

When an adolescent sends a nude photo of themselves to ONE individual, do they really comprehend that they are giving permission for that photo to potentially be seen by billions of people of all ages, from all corners of the globe? With more than a quarter sending or receiving these types of texts, photos and other explicit material, surely there needs to be additional education on the consequences of such behavior? Studies and articles time and time again report sexting leads to an increased likelihood of sexual activity, therefore, should there be just as much emphasize on the dangers of sexting as teen pregnancy? 

Technology, Privacy and Security can no longer be placed in the same sentence. Perhaps this is a message we need to start exploring with our children, but particularly adolescents.

Well worth the read! Parents of adolescence need 3 types of information: 1, basic information about what is normal and what is not in their adolescence behaviour. 2, principles on effective parenting during adolescence so they can adapt. And 3, they need to understand the changes both themselves and their adolescent is facing. #EducationIsTheKey

"Oppressed majority" takes place in an alternate reality where women jog half naked and work while the men take care of the kids and endure daily sexual harassment.

It's not very scientific but was quite an interesting watch. I've never been sexually harassed to any great extent but I know a lot of females that have and the effect is takes on self esteem and body image. So men, I ask you, how would you like it to be treated like an object instead of a person with real feelings and real emotions??
