1. Always have a water bottle in your car 2. Carry an extra lighter (even if you don’t smoke) 3. Get something new where you go to eat often, not just your usual. 4. Make a budget for yourself 5. But don’t forget to give yourself some play money and always round up on how much things cost so you have money left over 6. If you’re texting someone, but nervous to send it, just click the fucking send button. You typed that shit out for a reason. 7. Stay out late, but wake up early. You’ll be glad you had all of your day. 8. If something makes you laugh until your sides hurt, write it down in the notes in your phone, you’ll want to remember that later. 9. When you’re talking to someone, and you suddenly think of something you want to say, put up a finger and wait for them to finish talking. It’ll help you remember what you wanted to say, but you won’t interrupt them. 10. Go to plenty of concerts. Especially outdoor ones. Get drunk with your friends, but not sloppy drunk. Just drunk enough to scream your favorite songs and dance without feeling embarrassed. 12. Always keep a change of clothes in your car. Including a pair of shoes. You never know. 13. Keep at least $20 cash on you at all times. Gas is usually cheaper when you pay with cash, and not everywhere you go to eat splits checks. 14. It’s okay to be sad, but try not to forget about what makes you happy. 15. Coupons are always fantastic. 16. If you think something is cute, fucking wear it. Don’t worry about what everyone else thinks. You’ll look great, I promise. 17. Sex stores are fun, even if you just want a good laugh. 18. Plan out your days off with your friends, that way you aren’t stuck around asking the “I don’t know what do you wanna do” 19. Don’t forget to remind your friends how much they mean to you. 20. If someone gives you a compliment, smile and say thank you. They wouldn’t say it, if they didn’t mean it. 21. Drink plenty of water. Not only does it keep you hydrated, but clears your skin. 22. I know you might want to be tan, but is it really worth being burnt and exposing yourself to all that skin cancer bull shit? No. Use at least SPF 15. It’s not that hard and you’ll still tan. So stop being a brat. 23. You’re allowed to be happy. Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. 24. Aim to be better, not bitter. 25. Some days are better than others. 26. You can never over pack. Pack what you want. You’ll be glad you have options to choose from. 27. Take those extra hours at work. It’ll be worth it when you see your paycheck. 28. Clean your fucking room and make your bed you slob. It’ll look so much nicer and you’ll feel better you did it. 29. If you have to, make the first move. It’s scary, but someone has to do it. 30. Take plenty of pictures. Of the sunset, your food, your friends, your dog, selfies. Everything. That way, later when you scroll through your camera roll, you’ll remember everything about that day, good or bad.

Some of you may be wondering quite why I’ve made a poster with synonyms for ‘suggests’. Well, in my experience, it’s one of the words I most often struggle to replace in my essays. How interesting is it to read two pages of essay with the word ‘suggests’ written over a dozen times? Right, not very.
Ergo, here is a list I have compiled of words to replace ‘suggests’. “Shakespeare’s use of animal imagery implies an untameable nature to Katherina…” Whilst that is an appealingly written example, it does work to illustrate the underestimated use of synonyms for ‘suggests’.
Ridiculous Sentence Prompts
“Who wouldn’t be angry you ate all of my cereal and faked your death for three years!”
“I’m going to need you to put on some underwear before you say anything else.“
“Quick catch that cat it stole my wallet!”
“Fuck I feel like I got hit by a car… Wait I did? And it was your car?”
“The skirt is short on purpose.”
“I can’t believe I’m sitting in space jail with you of all people.”
“So why did I have to punch that guy?”
“I may have accidentally sort of adopted five cats.”
“I hope you know that my name is actually ________.”
“Please stop petting the test subjects. ”
“That is the tenth demon summoning this week holy shit.”
“Please put me down it’s just a sprained ankle"
“So what if I broke my arm I’m still doing it.”
“Why exactly do you need chloroform at 2AM?”

How to get along with different types of room-mate
Roommates can be divided into the following types:
1. The thoughtless roommates: This is the person who leaves their stuff scattered around the room and never cleans or tidies up after themselves. First, remember that he or she is not deliberately trying to annoy you. However, you need to discuss this or nothing will change. When you do that, don’t come across as being angry and accusatory. Instead, stay casual, warm and friendly. Also, ask if there’s anything you can do to make life easier for them.
2. The “borrower”: This is the person who takes your stuff, and treats your belongings as if they’re also theirs. This can range from something small like a few slices of bread to something more important like your clothes or bike. Clearly, this is NOT OK and needs an open discussion so that everyone is clear as to what the boundaries are.
3. The explosive flatmate: Often, this type of person seems calm and tolerant – then suddenly blows up over fairly minor things. Yet, we come from different backgrounds – and each person is unique – so different stuff annoys us or becomes an irritant. Here, a frank honest, discussion will often do the trick so that tension doesn’t build, and spoil a good relationship.
4. The irresponsible flatmate: This individual is unreliable and doesn’t seem to care about the impact of their actions. For example, they break stuff and just leave it, or forget to pay the bills … They never see it as their problem, and they just don’t seem to care. This person needs confronting in a firm, respectful way. And if things stay the same – don’t ever share with them again!
5. The ghost roommate: This is the person who is rarely around. They often have a busy life or else they travel with their job. They’re rarely problematic – so be glad that they’re so easy – and enjoy your time together when they happen to be there.
a shitposter’s guide to political bias in major news outlets
as in, stop quoting the fucking daily caller, for the love of god. we are all gross liberals/progressives/socialists here, so if you see any political post on your dash that uses any news outlet in the first list as its source, then there is like an 80% chance you’re about to reblog hyperbolic conservative propaganda with very little basis in reality. don’t do it, guys. don’t do it. check sources. save a life.
WARNING: GONNA HAVE SOME CONSERVATIVE OPINIONS:
Fox News: should be obvious. don’t do it.
The Blaze: Glenn Beck’s personal news network. don’t do it.
The Drudge Report: mostly link aggregation, opinions section is some bad shit. don’t do it.
The Daily Caller: Tucker Carlson’s baby. you may remember Carlson as the human mouthfart that used to run Crossfire before Jon Stewart fucking eviscerated him ten years ago. don’t do it.
Hot Air: doesn’t vote the straight conservative opinion ticket, some columnists have more liberal social views, but still. on the top 10 list of popular conservative blogs. don’t do it.
Breitbart: conservative, neoreactionary, published an opinion this month calling for a limit to the number of women allowed into STEM fields. don’t do it.
National Review: tbh if you gotta cite a conservative news source, go with TNR. the print magazine and policy institute especially do some high quality pieces, but like as a rule, you’re probably not gonna like the conclusions they come up with. online-only content can be a bit more opinionated. maybe do it.
Wall Street Journal: so center-right the right has actually started to disown it. you’re not gonna like their economics, but they’re not scandal-mongering drivel like some of the blogs on this list. maybe do it.
The Washington Examiner: very good local D.C. reporting, actually, but like, the opinions section is still not gonna be anything you wanna read. maybe do it.
The New York Post: conservative AND a tabloid, do not look to for unbiased reporting or anything except like vile exploitation of tragedy. don’t do it.
Any British Paper That Isn’t The Guardian or The Independent: american newspapers tend towards center-left, british papers tend towards center-right. my sympathies to our cousins across the atlantic.
Special Mention: The Daily Mail: do not cite the Daily Mail for any goddamn reason, i will come to your house and rub your nose into your keyboard like an untrained dog.
GOOD HEARTY LIBERAL STOCK:
The New York Times (plus Magazine): american paper of record and probably deserves it. will surely be too white elite new york liberal center-left for most of your commie asses, but still excellent.
New Yorker: i mean it’s not breaking news and it’s frequently so pretentious you get sucked up your own ass turning the page, but they do know their investigative journalism.
The Washington Post: on average, best political/policy reporting of any paper in the country. their wonkblog, even after Ezra Klien &co’s mass exodus, does excellent daily roundups of domestic political news.
The LA Times (and most other city papers): LA’s great, p much everything is center-left, some of them are gonna be better at covering national issues than others (looks pointedly at SF Gate). good for local, double-check for national.
Huffington Post: PROCEED W/ CAUTION, their news reporting is fine enough but the sheer number of bloggers attached to the site means there’s not always so much quality control. double-check that shit.
BuzzFeed: PROCEED W/ SLIGHTLY LESS CAUTION: be on the watch for bloggers here too, but tbh their staff reporting is some real good shit. they have a white house correspondent now and everything.
Slate: some good liberal shit.
The Atlantic: some good liberal shit. older than you. follow ta-nehisi coates on twitter.
NPR: some generally decent liberal shit. please donate to them.
Politico: some good liberal shit.
Mother Jones: some good liberal shit. older than you.
The Guardian: actually does some great US reporting, had reporters in Ferguson last summer.
Al Jazeera: also has an american bureau, good stuff, and, of course, international coverage unlike almost anything in the US.
BBC: doesn’t care as much about the US, but more foreign policy coverage worth reading.
Vox: where Ezra Klien and his crew all ran off to. unfortunate tendency for clickbait headlines, but their explainer cards do an excellent job of breaking complex news stories into easily digestible parts. i’m biased, but i love them.
SORTA INBETWEEN, THIS IS A SLIDING SCALE AFTER ALL (look, a graph):
The Economist: technically has a majority center-left readership, but you’re not gonna like their economics. they love themselves some free markets.
AP/Reuters: about as neutral as it possibly gets. all facts, no opinion. (pronounced roi-terz btw, impress your friends)
USA Today: well i guess making every hotel guest in the country step over it on their way to breakfast qualifies it as the most popular print paper in the country.
CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.: all technically left of center (by maybe a milimeter), but watch out for sensationalism. they are 24-hour networks after all.
The Daily News: i have no opinion on the daily news and i doubt any of you do either.
TIME magazine: i mean like, not objectively unreliable, but you could be making better choices.
LITERALLY SATIRE, THESE ARE LITERALLY SATIRE:
The National Report: it’s satire.
The Onion: it’s satire.
Empire News: it’s satire.
watercolor tips and tricks
some tips and tricks that have seriously helped me in excelling at watercolour
1. PAPER WEIGHT. for the love of god do not use any paper under 110-120 lbs to paint with watercolour, a very VERY wet medium that will soak clean through the paper if it’s not thick enough (most paper pads sold at craft stores have the weight listed on them. printer paper is around 20 lbs, sketch pads will be about 60 lbs, IDEAL watercolour paper 140 lbs+). i use only 140 lb paper for my serious watercolour works. canson and strathmore are my favourite brands
2. there’s no need to have very expensive watercolour paints, but it is important to use something better than crayola. my dad gave me a 24-pan windsor&newton watercolour set when i was 8 and these are still the paints i use today (i was a very careful child, but i never even had to replace my paint pans after almost 10 years either, so this brand, while super expensive, lasts and earns my gold star.) some other cheaper options are: x and x
3. if you’re going to be using watercolours, prepare to use WATER. so many people forget this, but it’s so important to realise this media is meant to look translucent, so you should see the paper through the paint. if you can’t see it, then you’re using the paints as if they’re gouache or acrylics, so try using more water and work with lighter colours.
OKAY NOW FOR THE ACTUAL TRICKS
4. SALT
quite overused in watercolour but it’s so freaking cool it can be pardoned. *remember for all of these effects, you have to use lots of water with the paint for it to work!
5. ALCOHOL/VODKA/HAND SANITIZER IF YOU’RE LAZY LIKE ME
you have to be very careful here because the second image can turn into the first if you use too much alcohol and it soaks through the water and paint gets in the spot, so be sure to experiment plenty before using this!!
but yeah you can use whatever clear alcohol you can find and it does p much the same thing
6. LIGHT SKIN TONES
okay while the darker skin tones are more easily achievable with browns and additional yellows/blues/reds to bring out the undertone, light skintones are hard as hell to make with watercolour because it’s hard to even think of what to mix. think no more!
YELLOW OCHRE + ANY PURPLE = perfect skintone you can play around with. adding more of yellow or purple will give you either cool or warm skin tones you can build up on and layer until they’re the proper value. remember to use purple/cool shadows with skin in compositions with normal lighting!
7. PAYNE’S GREY
and finally to repeat my previous post, use PAYNE’S GREY instead of black for a richer, darker colour in your painting. don’t use black unless your entire composition has warm colours, but even then, try to use a very dark brown instead of black.
8. WHITE
finally, it’s very important to mention this: never use the white watercolour they sometimes give you. EVER. EVER. dilute your paint with water instead to get a lighter value, or else you’re not using watercolour to its full extent (which is something you might struggle with if you’re used to using acrylics or oil)

that’s all i can think of at the top of my head, but if you have any questions or need further brand recommendations etc, feel free to message me!
Body Language Cheat Sheet for Writers
As described by Selnick’s article:
Author and doctor of clinical psychology Carolyn Kaufman has released a one-page body language cheat sheet of psychological “tells” (PDF link) fiction writers can use to dress their characters.
This is something I have always encouraged people to consider when writing. If you can afford it, and you have one in your area - TAKE A BODY LANGUAGE CLASS. It will open your eyes to a whole new world of subtleties you never knew existed. SO worth it as a “Real Life” skill and for all those times when you’re writing and you need your character to react nonverbally.
There is also, in addition to these others, the writer resource book: The Emotion Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi
Tips on Writing Essays:
I have had a lot of you asking for tips on writing essays, so here is a post that I hope answers all you questions :)
ANSWER THE QUESTION: There are so many cases where people write essays that don’t actually answer the question posed to them. Here are a few tips to make sure you fully understand what the question is asking:
Highlight any key words in the question and look up any words you aren’t familiar with
Identify the command words in the title - such as compare, explain etc. as these tell you what skills you should be using when writing
Establish if there’s any limits or specifics set on what the essay explores e.g. characters or certain chapters of the novel
PLANNING: It is incredibly important to plan your essay before you start writing, even more in exam situations when you are time pressured - you want to know exactly what you will write.
Start to think about and develop a statement/thesis which answers and responds to all parts of the original question
Order your points/argument in a logical order - depending on the subject this could be: chronologically through the novel, pros and cons, structured by theme or character, alternative points on two texts being compared etc.
Make sure each paragraph/point you plan is relevant and contributes to answering the question
STRUCTURE:
- Introduction:
This is the first thing the reader will read so it must be engaging, and ‘hook’ the reader straight from the begging.
Introduce your thesis and state what you will be discussing/arguing in the body of the essay.
Make sure you name the texts to be discussed if there are any.
- Main body of essay:
This is the main section of the essay, in which you expand on the points you outlined in the introduction.
Make sure every point has a new paragraph and that you begin each paragraph with a linking word (moreover, however, furthermore etc.) and a sentence that refers back to the question.
If it required make sure you use evidence (quotes/stats) to back up you points, and if it literature based, that you explain the quotes effect on the reader. At the end of paragraphs always link back to the question.
Many people use the PEEL (Point-Evidence-Explain-Link) paragraphs as a guide when writing essays
- Conclusion:
Summarise the points you have put forward
State and reinforce your point of view on the argument (if appropriate)
Never introduce a new argument - but it can be effective to add in a though-provoking comment or a new expression
End on a powerful note - ensuring the reader finishes knowing exactly where you stand/your main point of view
EDIT/DRAUGHT: In an exam situation there’s really only time to read through once/twice and check for spelling mistakes. In different situations it is very important to go through your essay multiple times in detail:
Check for spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes
Ensure you have varied your use of vocabulary - especially when starting new paragraphs (words like however and in addition can’t be overused)
Get other people to read it and gives their criticisms and suggestions
If there’s a word limit I always think it’s easier to go over it with an extra point and then condense and cut out words if you need to, rather than struggling to add in phrases here and there at the end
GENERAL TIPS:
Do any extra reading or research around the essay subject that may help you when writing the essay
Remember to put any references in the footnotes or in a bibliography at the end of the essay
Make sure you always hand them in on time and in a freshly written/printed version (no little annotations, corrections or crumpled paper)
