i find it interesting how we never got an adult ruben sex scene

from a writing perspective, it’s understandable: we see what Niall sees, and he obviously isn’t there for these moments.

not directly what the ask is about, but I do wonder if Ruben is actually quite bad at sex. he doesn’t really strike me as a man who cares that much about women’s pleasure, to be honest. obviously I might be completely wrong, and we don’t really have enough information to say either way, but that’s just the impression I get from him. he seems much more interested in sex as something that proves something about himself — that he’s masculine, experienced, in control, whatever — than as something that requires him to pay attention to the other person. it might have been enough when his partners were twentish but come on.

and then there’s his own sexual trauma, which just can’t not affect the way he approaches sex. even if he’s trying to separate himself from what happened to him, it’s still part of the way he understands intimacy and his own body. and then later in life he has fertility issues, which I can only imagine would add another layer of insecurity to all of that. so I can absolutely see him having this very specific idea of himself as a sexually competent, desirable man while the actual reality is… maybe somewhat different.

and then there’s Niall’s “to fuck the way you fuck” — but does he actually know the way Ruben fucks? or does he know the way he imagines Ruben fucks? because those might be two completely different things. Niall spends so much time looking at Ruben and filling in the gaps, and I think he probably has a tendency to turn Ruben into this larger-than-life version of himself in his head.

I actually have an essay sitting in my drafts about exactly that: the way Niall sees Ruben versus the way Ruben actually is. because the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that those are very different things.

(btw Niall doesn’t care about his abilities, it’s still the best sex of his life, because it's, well. it's Ruben)
