Soft frame has a tension she is all too familiar with, comes with the time of year and the aching sense of loneliness that persists in some moments. Josh is away on a mission, and she can manage. She knows that she can, but she also knows that it takes far more energy right now than it usually does. "Just some trouble sleeping. It's all right, though. I keep busy. Do you want some cake?"

It's unusual for Chloe's voice to drip with sarcasm, but then it's also unusual for her to have someone along for an adventure, let alone a sentient ship who has a penchant for winding her up. It's unusual for a queen to feel free, so bound by politics, tradition and expectation. Josh, though...he has made it feel so easy. The excitement when she gets a chance to be alone with him is nothing like she has ever felt before, finds herself chasing it, dreaming of it. So when they have a rare moment to slip away, she takes it without hesitation, his hand in hers. She has found herself pressed against the wall of one of the quieter corridors now, looking into that beautiful face. She laughs softly at his warning, glances at his lips. "My servants are well paid, and they have certainly seen far more scandalous things than a queen and her betrothed." She moves, lips brushing against each other. "Or would you like to wait, make our way to one of the hidden passageways?"

they had been skating about it for a couple weeks now... this little push-and-pull between him and chloe, a gravitational force battling between the two of them. but she had always been like the sun to him, lighting up his world from the moment they met, full of bright warmth and something else far hotter simmering deeper below. something that peter recognises in himself, though unable to put it into words. maybe that was why he felt so drawn to her?

he hadn't planned on kissing her — well, he thought about it a lot, actually. every time that beautiful smile dawned on her features, every time she said something so ridiculously smart that even he had to take a second to catch up, every time she just said his name... oh, he was down bad for chloe smith. but as the sunlight streamed through the window and lit up her face as she drew the freshly-baked goods from the oven, peter found his feet moving all by themselves. the first kiss had been gentle, merely to capture her attention and test the theory of whether she wanted him right now too ; the second kiss after she responded eagerly turned entirely all-consuming, his hands lifting to cradle chloe's face and draw her close enough to tangle their breaths — but it still wasn't enough for peter's liking. he needed to have her closer, to ensnare her in his web for as long as she would have him.

feeling her arms snake around his shoulders gave him the unspoken permission he needed to act again. releasing his tender yet tense hold on her face, making sure to keep their lips pressed together as he opened his mouth, inviting her to deepen things, peter's hands slip their way down to settle behind her thighs — and in one swift motion, a surprising display of strength from somebody as lanky as him, he lifts her straight off her feet and deposits her gently atop the counter that he had originally pressed her up against. sure, he had to tilt his head upwards now to continue kissing her, but peter really couldn't care less ; not as he stepped into the space between chloe's knees and ran a hand up to her hip, rethreading his other hand through her hair and sinking so wholly back into her fervour with a breathy moan.

Chloe wasn't entirely sure how it all started, couldn't pinpoint it if you asked. She'd enjoyed Peter's company from very early on after starting to work with him, and one thing just sort of led to another. They spent more time outside of work together, and suddenly she found him in her daydreams as well as her apartment every now and then. Perfect timing really, the aromas of spices, honey and chocolate having already started to waft through the place by the time Peter had knocked on her door.

They had just been talking, her timer not interrupting much as she went to take the pao de mel out of the oven. She'd turned around and there he was, and suddenly his lips were against hers. It took her a moment, and a part of her felt a bizarre sense of relief. Like the heavy, thundery downpour after quite some time of dry weather, complete with the build up just before and the spark of something within it as fierce as lightning. She didn't quite care about processing that all now, more focused on chasing that feeling, that closeness, quickly closing the distance between their lips soon after Peter had initially pulled away.

She sighed as he drew her even closer, happily draped her arms over his shoulders to entangle them even more. She was about to respond to him opening his mouth against hers when he lifted her up in one fell swoop. She squeaked and laughed against his lips as he set her on the counter, leaned down just that little bit so they didn't have to increase their distance at all.

She shifted on the counter, let her tongue roam and run against his. One hand snaked up, buried into those lovely sprigs of brown hair while the other urged him closer. She gasped softly at the feeling of his hand on her thigh, her back arching. Moving the hand from his back she peeled his digits away, shifting his palm to rest on her waist instead. She leaned down a little further, retreating her tongue to playfully nip his bottom lip. Pleased with herself, she giggled, wrapped her legs around his waist. She had a feeling that her baking would be going neglected for a bit, and for the life of her she couldn't find it in her to care.

Usually Chloe feels quite calm about these situations, usually it's easy to figure out a good strategy, level head. It's been some time since she's been out of the action now though, and it's been something rather unexpected. Good enough reason for her heart to be racing probably, but she wishes it wasn't.

It was supposed to have been a standard retrieval mission, not many needed, but an analyst was needed as well as a tech guy and it was their respective turns on the rota. Before they knew it there was a fleet of aliens approaching, and by the way they'd been shouting she doesn't reckon they were particularly happy. Hands grabbed, they'd run and found a nearby garden, holed up in a shed.

"Yes. Fine. That's fine. We can..." She takes a deep breath, leans back against the wood of the door. "Diplomacy can sometimes work but since we ran off with their thing..." She looks at the alien device Howie has been tightly holding onto since the surprise appearance. "They seemed pretty angry about that so I don't think it's going to go magnificently well. They might be slow but um...HQ probably won't be fast enough for them to either track us down or worse. Did you figure out what it is or had we not gotten that far yet?"

little scoff catches in her throat, raising her eyebrows again at sister even though she knows chloe is too busy to see it. "no, you're right." sarcasm drips from honey sweet tone. "I'm absolutely the type to enjoy my own voice that much." as if it didn't take years for anyone to get more than a squeak out of her.

she's always found such comfort in listening to chloe talk about the things she loves. "somehow I doubt anyone has ever looked at you and seen a regular rock." small laugh is undeniable all the same. "the rest sounds perfectly like you, but not that part. you couldn't be plain if you tried."

Chloe chuckles softly, fingers busy gently working brown hair into a matching braid. She enjoys Maeve's silence just as much as she is proud of how far her sister has come even from when they'd met, just two traumatised young girls who learnt how to navigate the world together. It still clings to them, both the quiet and the trauma, just in different ways. "Well, maybe it would be an interesting challenge for you, then. I'd say I'll make you do that but we both know that I'd never stoop so low."

She just smiles at the compliment at first, before raising an eyebrow at sister through the mirror. "Don't make me challenge you to see who wins," she replies, a playful look in honey brown eyes before she returns to her very important work of braiding. "I can be plain. I probably am plain to some people. Or is it purely because I'm tall?"

"Oh, you're no fun." Chloe huffs, pouts a bit as she looks through her playlist. "There's a difference between actually bad and overplayed you know, and I don't listen to pop trash." She gives Sam a pointed look. "I have Seal, The Cranberries or Chic. I feel like Queen is going to be either a big hit or huge miss with you."

“ so, what? we’re just sitting bloody ducks until then? ” despite immediately following chloe’s suggestions for some odd reason that she’s yet to wholly understand herself, keira’s body itched with an instinctual urge to move. to fight back, whatever that really meant when standing toe to toe with a thunderous beast. it’s been the same for her whole life, unable to just sit still and feel helpless, and instead throwing herself wholeheartedly into anything and everything. so here she was, prepared to do whatever it took to get chloe and herself out of this mess… if only she wasn’t so suspicious of this whole thing. they’ve had breaches before, sure, but why was hq so perfectly empty as well?

glancing from the doorway again and back to her friend, key can read between the lines of chloe’s face like a novel, a scarily-good skill she usually keeps to herself. but she’s glad to see the same questions were possibly flickering through the scientist’s mind that were rifling through her own. “ you don’t like this either, do you? something’s definitely really fuckin’ weird about this, ” she assesses, her arms folding across her chest and a smug smile starting to break out upon her lips. was she just smug that she could read chloe, even as the other woman maintained her calm outer attitude? maybe. yes. as a hand cards through her wild curls, key bounces on the balls of her feet anxiously ; she didn’t want to stress chloe out… but who better than the two of them, currently stuck inside alone with the xenomorph, to investigate what the situation at hand was all about?

“ you’re gonna hate this then, sorry. ” in what can only be described as a sudden surge of reckless bravery, the very life-blood of keira’s whole existence, her hand seeks out the door handle and she puts the bobbypin pulled out of her hair to work quickly and with expertise, eventually creaking the door open somewhat in victory. when she’s satisfied enough that there was no incoming stampede that would get them killed, the redhead turns back to her friend and nods her head as if to say follow me. “ think about it, chlo… we can’t get out without help, sure, whatever. but we could go and figure out what went wrong here in the meantime? ” she lingers in the storage cupboard for a second longer, letting chloe catch up with the madness — but then, she’s stepping out into the hallway and hoping she’s followed, throwing her friend a wink that feels more confident than she feels. “ dream team, princess. ”

Chloe sighs, some frustration in her demeanour. She sort of gets the stress, knows that Key isn't used to these sorts of situations, but an annoyed part of her is reminding herself why she enjoyed travelling alone. At least she didn't have to repeat the logical parts to herself, fewer variables and likelihoods to think about. "Fortified ducks if anything, thank you." She nearly asks if Key hasn't been listening, that they can still do things to keep them safe from where they are. It might only be a temporary measure, but she has enough tricks up her sleeve to make it work and, if all else fails, there'll be a response from UNIT that'll set everything straight.

She doesn't though. Instead her features tighten further, dark brown eyes steely as Key hits bullseye with her next question. She doesn't want to admit that her friend is right, not when she already knows what it would do to her ego. Later, when it's all over, she will find time to appreciate just how perceptive the redhead is. Right now she's just being a pain in the arse about it, and she knows that explaining her thoughts will just prove Key right too.

When Key apologises though, the steel in her eyes evaporates and they widen. Before she can stop her the door is unlocked, and Chloe's face crunches up, her head shaking. "You're mad!" She whispers hurriedly, reaches out as if to grab Key and keep her right here where it's safe. For goodness sake, why couldn't she just stay safe?! Chloe shakes her head again, now genuinely looking terrified. "We can't do this. Don't do this." She exhales, an anxious look cast to the corridor, to the faint sounds of the alien's wrath before she looks back. "We could get killed. I just told you, I...I couldn't, I can't...Please."

the door between them feels like miles, locked, solid, stubbornly present no matter how hard she might wish. her forehead rests against the wood with a light thud, shifting down to sit on floor, resting against the door. there's no point in pressuring chloe to open door... if she wants to, she shall. it's always hard to come back, it's hard to live on. but too often it's so much harder to keep on living as the world insists on repeating the same horrors and mistakes no matter how hard they tried to help the first time.

"everyone dies in the end." it's the one universal truth, the one thing they have left to hope for at some point. "but we have. think of all the people we've crossed paths with, even the little actions." giving up hope is a dangerous thing: a noose when they have no idea how much time is left. "we can only help, queenie. if they don't take the offered hand - or offered lessons... they still have their free wills."

Sometimes it gets to Chloe more than other times. Sometimes all the memories, all the pain and the blood and the loss come flooding back and it's as though it tries to suffocate her. Everyone leaves, everything fades, yet they exist as some sort of morbid anomaly, dragged through time and both hoping and fearing that this death will be the last. She despises it all, wishes above anything that she could go back to that young woman who didn't have so much on her shoulders.

She doesn't say what she wants to say out loud, only sighs, runs her hand through her hair. She doesn't budge, only rests her head against the solid wood of the door. "Even when they do, they still die...what a pointless existence this is. We barely even exist. Do you remember living? I quite frankly don't know if I do."
