she didn’t realise who the hand belonged to before it was too late , she’d already made eye contact . “ oh, uh - , ” she spoke in shock , snapping her hand back from the book as though it were a red hot poker . this was precisely why lu was served so poorly by her tendency to daydream , to drift softly from the reality surrounding her . the grand library was quiet this time of the day , most other students were having lunch or simply still asleep , and she was browsing particularly obscure pieces of fiction on a neglected row of shelves . it was unsurprising , however , that the hand that reached out for precisely the same book , at precisely the same time as luna , belonged to none other than caleb gardner . somehow , it was always the library in which they found themselves meeting . “ sorry . ” she muttered , refusing to meet his gaze . “ i — uh . you go for it . ” as she spoke , luna took a demonstrative step back . it was probably safer to leave distance between herself and the boy . a soft smile blossomed across her lips . “ you’ve got yourself a deal . next time . ” that was something lu could agree to without any fuss . despite being her opposite in almost every way , clifford was also a very dear friend . and , okay , she also liked to keep a close eye on him to make sure he wasn’t getting into TOO much trouble . “ he’s ... certainly eccentric . although , who am i to talk ? ” a giggle escaped her lips as she shook her head gently , self-aware enough to recognise that she was prone to strange habits and fascinations . as an only-child , and a lonely one at that , luna had passed much of her time preoccupied by obscure historical events or scientific theories . any subject , really , that had an encyclopaedic entry or a book written on it . these days , she often found herself lost in a wikipedia wormhole for hours on end , only surfacing when one of her sorority sisters pulled her away . “ how have you been , cliff ? how was your summer ? ” she asked , linking arms cheerfully with the boy as she started in the direction of the quirky café .

it really was her lucky day , considering cliff rarely has his school supplies near him , in fact he even made a tiny effort to go to class , he stayed twenty minutes , but that’s not the point . “ to solve a what? hodge━ never mind ” he said as he tried to process what the girl had just said , but even as hard as he tried , the numerous times he skipped his classes just showed he had no clue what luna was talking about . “ coffee sounds nice . ” he said with a soft smile appearing on his face . ” my treat though , i can’t let you pay for me , right ?”

“ that’s not really how saying thank you works , clifford . ” a fond smile tweaked up the corners of her mouth . “ i’m paying . no arguing , please . ” she gave a delicate wave of her fingers , as though to signal she simply wouldn’t hear any more of it . money was no object for either individual , and yet it was still important to luna that she be the one to buy the coffee . he had helped her out , majorly , and for that she owed him her gratitude. “ how about that little place just past the main library ? you know , with the slightly strange but very nice owner. ” lu liked to think of herself as something of a coffee-shop connoisseur , considering she often studied in them when it felt as though the walls of the library were slowly closing in on her .

a laugh was quick to escape cliff’s lips . it was not every day that you see a person so eager to write down an equation. “ i mean i probably have one . ” he said as he started searching through his backpack ,which wasn’t really a hard task considering she was half empty , but within seconds he managed to find a pen. “ yep, here you go. ” he said as he gave her the desired item. “ you’re probably the only person i know , that would panic over an equation .” he replied , though she really was the only one , most of his friends probably didn’t even know what an equation was, so it was safe to say she was the smartest of the bunch “ guess i’m a lifesaver then huh ? ”

“ brilliant , thank you ! ” she exclaimed , eagerly taking the pen from his hand. despite the worry clifford often caused her , at the end of the day , she knew she could always count on him . “ it’s not JUST an equation . it’s part of an attempt to solve the hodge conjecture . a crappy attempt , but an attempt none the less. ” she carefully wrote the equation down on the back of an old , crumpled receipt she’d located in her pocket , a relieved smile curving up the corners of her mouth . tucking the receipt back into her jumper , she held the pen out toward clifford . “ a lifesaver. ” she agreed with no hint of sarcasm or exaggeration . “ let me buy you a coffee , or something , to say thanks ? ”

cliff was raised in a family where achievements meant way more than showing love and affection towards your child . it was evident to him , and probably everyone around him , who was the favorite child of the reyes family. and even thought his brother wasn’t his father’s child it still seemed like they preferred him over clifford . which is why it was nice from time to time to spend time with someone who cared just like luna . there was something about her , she was genuine and nothing like the people he would usually spend his time with , but maybe that’s why he liked hanging out with her , it was a nice change for him. “ well hello to you too. ” he said as a grin appeared on his face . “ if i didn’t know you better i would think you were trying to ignore me. what’s the rush ?”

it wasn’t until lu had collided with the boy that recognition flushed her features , having been too lost in determined thought prior to the unexpected impact to notice his presence . “ cliff , hi ! ” she exclaimed , struggling to catch her breath . “ i - do you possibly have a pen i could borrow ? ” she asked , bright eyes hopefully flitting over her friend as though the writing instrument would magically materialise . “ it’s just , i REALLY need to write this equation down and , stupid me , i don’t have a pen. ” the words were delivered at approximately four times the acceptable speed for a sane person to talk , leaving the girl breathless once again . she simply refused to let yet another perfectly good theorem slip through her fingers , certainly not like that time a few months back when she’d been too slow getting out of the shower and it had disappeared from her thoughts like a particularly mocking magician .

BUT , hear me out .. “ sienna throws her open palms into the air , as to motion for the other one to stop searching for the logical part in sienna’s words . maybe because it’s never there to begin with or because the brunette just wanted her soulmate to stop for a second and let herself be f r e e . either way – sienna was determined to get her point across . “ if it’s warm enough , it will be perfect . think about it .. bungee jumping in your underwear is the closest experience to your birth you could ever get . “ she stressed , palms moving to clasp together . “ it’s perfect , lu – it’s going to be a m a z i n g ! “ sienna almost whines out . having ideas that were questionable was somewhat of a specialty for the van kirk heiress . “ i promise i’ll do my research . no one is losing their panties , lu . you have to do that with me ! “

her mouth had fallen open approximately fourteen sentences ago , when sienna had first started describing this unhinged whirlwind of an adventure . it was only now that luna gathered herself enough to close it , although her widened eyes gave away every last inch of her incredulity . she’d always been an open book , but sienna was granted an usual degree of access . “ bungee jumping ... in our underwear . ” she repeated slowly , as though to make certain she’d heard this insane scheme correctly . but , alas , she had heard it with perfect clarity . “ i don’t know if i want to experience ... THAT . ” both girls were quite aware that they would take a bullet for the other , just like luna was quite certain she would eventually be worn down & left with no choice but to agree to the ludicrous proposal . “ i — how did you even come up with that idea , si ? i mean , it’s definitely interesting but , well , it’s also ... rather unusual . ” tactful as ever , she was careful not to criticise it outright .

the girl wasn’t certain how she’d ended up trapped , listening to d.c. rejoice about his classes . of course — lu was genuinely pleased his schedule had shaped up so nicely , but had she stumbled into a strange , alternate universe in which everything was plain sailing between them ? they didn’t make small talk like this anymore . so deep in perplexed thought , his question caught luna off-guard . “ pardon me ? ” her response came instinctively , accompanied by rapid , confused blinks . “ oh — schedule . gosh . uh , well . ” a tiny line appeared between her eyebrows , “ it looks ... good , i suppose . unfortunately i have both friday and evening classes , but i rather set myself up for that . ” her shoulders quirked jerkily upward in a shrug which was intended to appear nonchalant , but likely had quite the opposite impact .
