CATCHING FEELINGS

                  BACKDATED TO A YEAR AGO . . .

it’s silly, and heejin’s fully aware of this. she feels like a complete fool for even acting this way, but she can’t exactly help herself. she knows that it’s probably an unwritten rule somewhere in the book of friends to not crush on your friend’s brother but it’s also not exactly fair at all when you take into account that said brother is lee taeyong. 

somewhere deep down, she’s a little thankful that taeeun isn’t around just yet, and it’s only her and taeyong in the apartment, but it also makes her completely ... unnerved. because she’s sure that taeyong simply sees her as a little sister and nothing more, and she’s fine with that. really, she is! after all, she’s convinced herself that it’s all just a phase and that soon enough she’ll get over him. 

“is t-taeun unnie coming back soon?” she asks, and she hates the way that her voice wavers just slightly. it’s a little silly as well but she can’t help but think that if she plays her cards right that maybe, just maybe ... no. no, that’s insane. she bites at her top lip and looks around the humble apartment.

yangyang is enjoying the spooky season, dressed head to toe as eleven from stranger things. his wig is wonky and his dress may not be the correct shade of pink but he’s not really concerned, people get the idea at least. he’s watching people do the scream contest, wondering if he should do it but not sure he wants to risk losing his voice over it when heejin walks up to him. 

“wow so scary!” he says with a light laugh, looking her up and down in her vampire costume. “i thought you were really a vampire just using the festival as a cover up.” he smiles at her attempts to look scary and thinks to himself that she’s too pretty to really be scary, especially when trying just makes her look cute. “definitely terrifying,” he says with a nod. he looks down at her broken heel. “i’m sure they have something around here. i was just wondering, i’m down to go look at some booths.” he holds out his arm so she can link hers with his. “don’t trip though,” he says with a grin.  

it’s a little silly, but the tiny compliments have heejin smiling. “really?” she replies, happy with the compliment she’d just received from yangyang. in an attempt to ‘scare’ him a little more, she lifts both hands, but instead of saying boo once again, she laughs a little. giving his costume a good look, she continues, “you look great too! stranger things? really creative.”

“thanks,” she smiles, gently holding onto his arm. “i guess eleven’s a gentleman?” she teases, but she’s genuinely thankful for his arm. her broken heel had caused her enough trouble, anymore and she thinks she might just decide to go around barefoot. she can’t help but look around the booths in slight awe though, halloween has always been one of her favourite holidays. “you know what would be really cool? if they had like vampire shaped slippers. i wouldn’t care how funny it would look but i’d buy them!” she laughs.

     “what boys?” a look of concern crosses his face now. not that he would interrupt his sister’s budding romance, but she really shouldn’t be doing something like that alone. if taeyong knew the boys in question, he may feel better. even if they were from her school or something. but the mystery makes him uneasy.

     “she’ll be mad if i interrupt her,” he realizes that he’s stuck. he’ll either get chewed out by his mother or his sister, and he has to pick the lesser punishment. “ugh. heejin, can you take me to where you last saw her? she’s late, and taesuk has to get home.” the poor youngest of the family, though he probably is delighted to stay up a few extra hours.

“accidentally!” heejin’s quick to defend herself, lest taeyong decides to accuse her of anything else that she didn’t purposely do. sure, taeyong isn’t her older brother, heejin doesn’t have one, but he’d always acted like one (even when she never wanted him to, much rather preferring he treat her like how a man would treat a woman. but that was another issue altogether).

still, despite her own complicated thoughts, she’d always been envious of her friends for having such a caring brother. “they weren’t that cute. maybe a little. but they approached us right before we entered the haunted house. taeeun unnie went with them, but i wasn’t going to give up a haunted house for a bunch of boys,” she shrugs. ah right, she’s getting off track. 

“yeah sure,” heejin finds herself giving in. “i saw them a while ago near the booths, getting a few things,” she gestures for taeyong to follow her. “oppa, you should repay my kindness by treating me to something the next time we hang out” she jokes, turning around briefly to look at him, silly smile plastered on her face.

perhaps the best thing so far about the whole festival was the fact that they’d be screening horror movies. heejin doesn’t hide the fact that she’s a fan of movies, particularly horror ones, and so when she’d heard that they’d be screening them, it was normal for the girl to be ecstatic.

still, the seating arrangement didn’t quite work in her favour. if she’s being honest, heejin’s small and a little petite. some would say… short (she’s short). and as such, it wasn’t particularly easy for her to get a good seat where she could see everything on the screen.

in an attempt to get better seats, she squeezes her way past people, popcorn in her hand. “excuse me!” she says, trying her best to squeeze through. that is, until she accidentally trips and spills her popcorn onto a stranger. “i’m so sorry!” immediately she apologizes, eyes widening. “are you alright?” she asks, brushing popcorn off of the stranger.

spooky season. despite how little heejin may seem to care about ... many things ... she’d always enjoyed halloween, eyes glowing whenever she spotted anyone dressed up in a creative costume. if she’s being honest, heejin sort of wishes that she’d had more confidence to go dressed as whatever she wanted to. but alas, she never knew if she could quite pull of the look as well as other girls. instead, she opted for something simple; a vampire. basic, she knows, but she can’t screw up much dressed as a vampire. 

still, heejin, being herself, somehow manages to screw up one way or another and finds her shoe with a broken heel.

“yangyang!” the moment she spots her friend, she breaks out into a smile, beaming as she walks (floats? do vampires float?) towards him, despite her broken heel. “boo!” she lifts her hands up and attempts to make a scary expression, but she’s smiling too wide, excited to see her friend.

“happy halloween! do i look scary?” she asks, furrowing her brows in an attempt, to once again, look scary. “i was on my way to look at the booths, i’m hoping they sell some sort of spooky slippers or shoes... since...” she looks down at her own pair and frowns. “how about you?”

AND NOW FOR THE MAIN EVENT … with @lmheejin

     “hey,” he grabs heejin’s arm, gently enough but still with every intent to get her attention. “have you seen taeeun? i thought she was with you.”

     perhaps letting the kids run off by themselves wasn’t his best idea. it’s getting late and his younger sister was supposed to meet him and their siblings at the front gate ten minutes ago. he’s not worried just yet, he doesn’t imagine anything too bad has happened to her. but taeyong is a diligent big brother, so when he spotted heejin without his littler sister, he started to worry. she might just be held up in the haunted house, or catching the end of the last movie playing. he just didn’t expect her to be separated from her friends.

     “can you try texting her? i think she ignores me just out of spite.” he grins, and turns to taewon, the next oldest after him. he asks her to keep an eye on taesuk, that they can wander around until he finds their missing sister as long as she keeps her phone on. maybe heejin will help him, and if not, he’ll just go on a solo search.

it’s not as though she doesn’t have anyone else to go with; but the lees are like family to her, and she enjoys spending time with them. heejin herself wasn’t exactly someone who’d readily open up to anyone else, much preferring her small circle of friends, and taeyong fell into that despite being a few years older.

“i thought she was with you,” heejin furrows her brows. she’d only just left the haunted house (which, in all honesty, didn’t feel that haunted), and her clothes were covered in what she thought was decor. “that’s why i had to go in there all alone! i might have accidentally punched a guy in there by accident...”

“a girl ignoring her brother out of spite? how surprising,” dramatically she puts a hand over her mouth, but she doesn’t deny his request. opening her messaging app, she begins to type a quick text to taeeun only to remember when she’d last seen her friend. “oh oppa!” she turns to taeyong, and holds onto his arm. “i actually saw her a while ago! she was flirting with some boys, but it should be fine. taeeun unnie can do better.”
