Day 03
I would iike to change the format of my post into describing a single idea everyday instead of writing all I had done during the day. This time I would like to talk about Mathematics. I listened to a new podcast “Numberphile”, which was usually talked about mathematics by Youtube Video. In the podcast, It was an interview with English Mathematician, Hannah Fry. Hannah Fry at first wanted to be a hairdresser, but somehow continued her study and got a PhD. Her PhD was about fluid dynamics, modelling formation of water droplet in the wings of plane or F1 racing car. Just after she finished her PhD, she really get exited to work in a aerodproject to design wings for F1 racing car, where she imagined that most engineer would thinking about the phystics, thinking about the mathematics and come up with mathematical equation to find an optimal design for the racing car. In the reality, everything had been covered up in the computer simulation. What was being done is engineer run a simulation software and picking up the image with the least amout of air resistance, “chucking darts basically, really boring” said Fry. She then back to the academic work and had a postdoc about applying mathematics in social studies. This was the part where it was getting exciting. Human behaviour was thought to be complex and unpredictable. In fact, it was not. Hannah tried to model the human behaviour using mathematical equation. She and her team also produced the most amazing study, at least according to her, something about retailer. However, sadly, no one has read the paper. They somehow model all of the retailers as an continuous line in mathematical system. In my own opinion,I think this mathematic model is very amazing. I am sure that I will check it out later.
Her mathematician worklife was basically putting up the model equation into computer, when the model does not work, she will cracking up pencil-and-paper mode to analyze the equation. When she got stuck, she would take a walk to refresh her mind.
Today, she is a very popular mathematician, appering on several events, writting several books, appearing on Numberphile youtube channel, but it is not used to be. She used to be a very nerdy mathematician. Everything was started when she gave a small talk in the club about mathematic model of how disease spread. From there, she got invited from one talk to another talk and finally into the TED talk. After the TED talk, she was told to wrote a book about mathematics of love, to accompany her talk which will be released. And voila, one book into two and three books and she gained her reputation. In spite all of that, she thought having a child hindered her producitivty in mathematics. She mentioned that after everything is settled she really want get back to her nerdy mathematician life again. In my own opinion, I think she is an amazing mathematician and I will be waiting for her next novel “Free as Bird”. Sorry if there is any mistake by content or english grammar. I am still learning to write a blog. The original numberphile interview was attached in the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKCjQWmUwv8
