What drives me crazy is that Juri is right. "Miracles are not real. Eternity is not real. That castle is not real." She gets it from the beginning. She sees through the comphet, the gender roles, the system, and it makes her so powerful. She rightfully hands Utena's ass to her in both their duels, and is the older, more experienced lesbian who challenges Utena's comphet.

By every standard, Juri has seen through the world, and it's astounding that she doesn't escape by the end. Not only that, but Nanami, who is absent in the follow up movie, is the next to escape instead of Juri. A series of women are escaping the world one by one, but Juri lingers.

It adds another layer of tragedy to her character because, in the end, Juri herself is the one choosing to stay despite knowing there is nothing for her there. Juri denies both the miracle that her feelings can be known and the miracle promised to her by conforming to cishet standards. Although Juri firmly refuses to buy into the system she finds herself in, she also doesn't believe that there is anything beyond it.

Better to linger in this space where her feelings aren't known. Better to never open the door and see what's beyond. Better to refuse revolution.
