PISACA

What a truly classic-feeling monster. Classic is a different feeling than unique, and both are good; unique monsters are very original takes on ideas, while classic monsters adhere to a known formula that inspires a feeling of nostalgia. Pisaca has both in spades. Even though it is largely just a snake with tentacles (snentacles), Pisaca manages to feel at home with the rest of the snake-inspired monsters of Greek and Dark Age myth (the Hydra, the Gorgon, the Cockatrice, etc.). A lot of monsters in Dark Souls as a whole have that same sort of feeling going on, but this one in particular goes above and beyond. The Pisaca foregoes arms and legs, making do instead with a mass of writhing tendrils for both grasping prey and for locomotion. It’s a phenomenal look, sort of becoming the logical endpoint for the tentacle-covered monsters in Lovecraftian myth, while not going too overboard. Here, less is more, and the few large tentacles on the Pisaca’s head do the work that a throng of them couldn’t. Having so few allows the silhouette to be strong and readable. In a game that prioritizes rewarding skill and forethought, it’s important to make the enemies have good outlines, and a writhing mass of blue pasta does that significantly worse than having enough to communicate “octopus head” and show where its attacks are coming from. The hidden “spike” the Pisaca conceals under its bell shows the designers went the extra mile in making an octopus enemy. Its spike is a sort of monstrous version of the octopus’s beak. Despite looking like a mosquito proboscis, it’s merely for impaling - and possibly generates the spit attack - but it adds a real sense of malice to what would otherwise be kind of a cutesy enemy. A sad, jellylike snake thing that wanders around a prison feels only vaguely threatening, so I like the direct representation of its danger. My only real question is who decided that the weird blue raspberry gorgons would be ideal wardens? I guess if you just kind of fill a prison with dangerous animals, the only people who break out weren’t going to be stopped by sapient guards anyways.

in the late 90s there was an anime called initial d which was all about street racing and drifting. naturally every single drift was played for great drama and excitement.

in 1999, an italian named giancarlo pasquini released a europop song under the alias dave rogers called Deja Vu. this song was picked up as the theme song for the above anime. it in turn became a meme, a shorthand for drifting and Cool Moves as a concept.

in 1983, air canada flight 143, a full sized 767, ran out of fuel halfway to edmonton, alberta. this is not something you want to have happen to a huge airplane. the flight chose to try and make an emergency landing at a nearby decomissioned airforce base (as they were falling fast and could not make it to a proper airport), where they ran into a second problem: they were falling out of the sky at 500 feet per mile, but reached gimli (the base in question) while still too high to safely land. normally a plane would just do a big loop-de-loop to lose altitude, but they had maybe three minutes of airtime left before they hit the ground: not enough time to make any kind of circle. the pilot, therefore, decided to execute a side slip to lose speed and altitude. this is Not a move you want to do with a massive 767, because airplanes are not built for that and if you screw it up that plane is hitting the ground at a high speed at a weird angle and breaking into a million pieces. nevertheless, the captain tried it... and succeeded. the plane landed perfectly, and there were no major injuries! (a couple of people did get minor injuries when evacuating the plane after.) he did it so well, in fact, that the plane was refueled, flown out of gimli a couple days later, and continued to fly for another 20 years with the nickname "Gimli Glider."

Psychosis can mess with critical thinking skills and make completely irrational things seem perfectly logical at times. When a delusion kicks in, it can be very difficult to logic your way out of it.

I periodically think my milk is filled with slugs and larvae, even though I know rationally, that's not the case. Most days, I can work through that by reminding myself that I live with other people who also drink the milk, and if there were bugs in it, someone else would have noticed, so it's more logical that I'm just hallucinating.

However, the worse psychosis gets, the ability to logic like that can become more difficult. I might start thinking things like "they're only pretending to drink the milk to trick me" or something. They're not, and the milk is fine, but... the brain fills in the gaps of the logic with whatever it can to preserve the delusion.

Delusions often sound completely ridiculous on the outside, but when you're in the delusional state, it feels completely rational, often in ways you can't fully explain.

I often come out of delusions and think "how did I think that was real", but… well, brains are mean like that, y'know?

HG 1/144 Twelve Olympians Prototype Transformable Mobile Suit ORX-139 "Hambrabi"

GQuuuuuuX kits are back, this time with the new GQ version of the Hambrabi from Zeta Gundam! The GFreD was going to be my last kit from this line, and I wasn't initially super interested in getting another GQuuuuuuX kit however the gimmicks included in this one really sold it for me.

The Hambrabi of the original timeline was a custom prototype unit created for the Titans, specifically the Yazan unit, featuring a simple tranformation and extensive auxillary sensors to support better visibility in the Mobile Armour state. The GQ version is mostly unchanged, being a much more limited (potentially even single) unit developed for the anti-Zeon Twelve Olympians and piloted by Gates Capa. This version is pretty similar to the design of the main timeline version, aside from an updated artstyle and some extra detail on the wing binders. The GQ version features a "head" section that can pivot forwards in Mobile Suit mode, and lacks the beam sabers used by the UC version. The inbuild shoulder-mounted beam cannons are also much larger, but overall the design is reliatively unchanged, compared to other GQuuuuuuX redesigns like the Red Gundam, Gelgoog, and Police Zaku.

I kept this build reliatively simple, as I took it with me on a trip to see some friends in Melbourne. Apart from a basic panel line and some limited soot staining around some of the visible vents, I also added some silver pigment to the metallic silver frame sections. The metallic detail of these parts is unfortunately a little lost due to the matte topcoat, and in hindsight these parts would probably benefit from a gloss finish instead. There's not really any colour correction necessary on this kit, which was a welcome surprise.

The various mono-eye sensors on this kit are really nicely concieved. They're moulded in a semi-translucent pearlescent UV-reactive pink, and are absolutely miniscule individual parts. They're actually articulated and you can more them along their "tracks" for the shoulder and rear cameras. The "head" camera is inserted into a ball-joint housing that can rotate freely with the aid of a tweezer or toothpick. The torso camera is not articualted and unfortunately very recessed and thus not very visible in my photos. Despite how tricky these tiny parts were to work with, I do perfer this approach to the often flat looking stickers used for mono-eyes in other kits.

The stingray-like Mobile Armour transformation of the Hambrabi was not featured in the GQuuuuuuX anime so it's surprising that the kit has a transformation, although it's not particularly impressive, resembling just the standard Mobile Suit form bent in half.

The kit has a decent number of weapons. There's a redesign of the Feyadin Rifle long beam rifle used by the Hambrabi and Gabthley in Zeta Gundam. It's done up in a really nice silver and dark purple. The foregrip and auxillary camera are articulated for extra poseability. This pairs well with the extra backpack-mounted beam rifles for a formidable armament.

While in Zeta Gundam, the stock of the Feyadin Rifle becomes a beam saber emitter, with the GQ version, the stock can fold forwards to turn the rifle into a Beam Sycthe, with the barrel making up the handle of the weapon. This is a design feature exclusive to the model kit. The beam effect part is made of a rather nice trans-yellow UV-reactive part.

Also included is the "sea snake" weapon (just as is wielded by the original Hambrabi). This is a small grappling weapon with an electric field emitter that can incapacitate mobile suit pilots. The kit includes a stowed and "active" form, with the latter using a lead wire to recreate the image of the weapon in use.

The kit includes two open fist options for the weapons, and two open hand options in a threatening claw-like pose. The hand options have a new and much more secure peg-based design, which makes them difficult to use but much more secure than older hand designs.

Overall, this was an enjoyable if at times frustrating build. Some of the ankle armour is needlessly loose, and it can be difficult to work with the complex internal design of the head, which uses a lot of small parts to achieve its articulation. Many of the parts are also very thin and feel as if they would be very easy to accidentally damage during assembly. Despite this, I really love how the final result turned out and the kit has a proud place in my GQuuuuuuX display.

i think part of why a ton of people don't realise it is because of how the general idea of trauma people have internalised involves some singular massive traumatic thing like severe bullying or someone's death or such but like, things add up, enough small things will also leave you with trauma even if none of those things are really significant on their own like, you know, dealing with discrimination like for example racism or transmisogyny or both for long enough
