Random Top 5 Fics Recs of All Time
I've kept a note in my phone for the past 10 goddamn years where I accumulate fics that I love and return to often. So here are my top five favs of all time.
1. Bend Sinister, mortsix, Forgotten Realms, 2019
Glorious writing, building upon established canon to weave an enticing and many-layered narrative that takes place seamlessly within the main plot of 'Servant of the Shard' (not an easy task). Unapologetically better than canon. Sadly never completed but a masterpiece nonetheless.
2. art is for arrogant blowhards, leoandsnake, Disco Elysium, 2021
This fic has amazing depth and attention to detail that extends into every character and setting, and really nails the rationale of self-sabotage in a way that's translates very much to the real world. I always appreciate a Harry POV where you can feel his "skills" without resorting to actual DE style internal dialogue. 3. To Beard the Lion, BurnItAllDownDahling, Dragon Age Inquisition, 2015
Another self-sabotage fic (I'm beginning to sense a trend), this fic is a really unique perspective on Cullen in particular, which investigates the idea of a fix-it fic, where -surprise- you can't actually fix him. I also really enjoy a more naive Dorian who is absolutely in over his head. 4. Living With the Firelight, Yakkai, Red Dead Redemption II, 2019
It may be a short, porny, one-shot but it's hiding a great little character study on Javier in there. The environment descriptions are so vivid and well realised it feels genuinely like eavesdropping to read. 5. Storm Warning, NeverwinterThistle, Baldur's Gate 3, 2023
GOAT Durgetash fic. The writing is bulletproof. The characterisation is flawless. There's an operatic quality to the way the story builds, and leaves you craving answers. It's one of those fics where you go to the author's profile and read every fic they've written regardless of fandom because it's just that good.
