i'm listening to gathering moss, by robin wall kimmerer, and she is talking about a very odd job she was consigned to do, where an eccentric millionaire recuited her to consult on a "habitat restoration". when she arrives, the job they actually want her to do is to tell them how to plant mosses on the rocks in his garden. he wants it to look like a specific, beautiful wild cliff in the woods nearby, with centuries-old beds of moss growing thick and strong. she tells him it is impossible. such a thing would take decades to accomplish.

later, she is called back to look at the progress of the moss garden and is amazed by the thick, well-established mosses. how did they do it? she asks.

then they take her out to the woods and show her that they have been blasting huge chunks of rock out of the cliff, packaging them in burlap, and moving them to the owner's garden.

for years i have been trying to find out if there's a way to just test your way through college credits and ultimately a degree without actually going to school--half for good, practical, career-oriented reasons and half out of a spiteful belief that i can already pass multiple degree programs without fucking around with a college--and i think the CLEP exams and the Modern States voucher program is very close to or exactly what ive been looking for. in the associated list of 'easiest bachelor's degrees" was Business Administration, and Communications and i laughed a mean laugh. i 100%ed a handful of College Composition prep tests last night so i think i could just mop up a degree's-worth of that also

by the way, important side note: the minimum age to sign up on Modern States and start taking their free college courses that then convert to a voucher for a free CLEP test that THEN turns into transferable credits is 13 years old. if you are a teenager this could be a really really good way to just slam dunk a bunch of transferable credits ahead of time. im just starting to look into this and there are often a ton of hoops to jump through when soemthing SEEMS like a good deal, ie, there are reasons this isnt better known/better utilized. but its the first im hearing about it and i wish i had known about it when i was 13

I think that Elon Musk is an object lesson in moral philosophy.

Like, he's the epitome of self-interest; the closest thing real life can produce to a Randian hero. And by any reasonable standard, he's won at life! He's the richest man ever to live, and he's getting richer; he controls the channels of information and communication; the government of what remains the world's only superpower waits on his command. If capitalism had a victory condition, he would surely have achieved it. And yet...
