it was complicated. her feelings not so much, that was something she only seemed to become more and more sure of. the situation however made it all feel much more complicated than it needed to be. of course normani was aware of the possible affect getting into a relationship with lauren could have on the group dynamic. and after everything they’d been through, that was the last thing she wanted to happen when they were doing so well now. but was it fair to hold back feelings for the sake of everyone else? she was stuck in thought but for tonight, she decided to push it to the back and just have a good time with her best friend.
a bright grin spread over mani’s face at being called cute. though it was soon gone when she saw the pile of movies consisting of all horror. she frowned, “really? do we have to? i’m never gonna sleep tonight after this!” she protested. horror movies had never been something she was much a fan of. sometimes she would watch them, but it wasn’t often. but she soon gave in against her better judgement and sat back. at least it would make her best friend happy. “we don’t need to be authentic about it… c’mon you’re doing this on purpose just to scare me and i don’t appreciate it.” she muttered with a pout as lauren turned out the lights. mani shifted to get comfortable as the movie started and reached over to take some popcorn. she was kinda glad lauren spoke after a while, giving her something else to focus on. she looked at the other, her expression soft. “i know you weren’t trying to get attention. those people will look for anything to hate you and it’s dumb.” she swallowed a little at lauren’s confession, it broke her heart to think she felt the need to hide. especially from her. “from me too? lo, why didn’t you ever tell me that before? there’s nothing that would make me change how much i care about you. i love this version of you so much because i see how much happier you are.”
tonight was going to end up when they talked everything out, but lauren just wasn’t sure how to explain everything she was feeling right in that moment. there was a long sigh as she sat in thought between their small conversations and trying to watch the movie. the brunette would smile a little every time that normani jumped, and after a while she curled her arm around the other, and allowed her to cuddle into her side. “you know...you’re scared, but you bet my ass that nothing would happen to you with me!” she pressed a sloppy kiss to mani’s cheek before letting out one of her signature giggles. things were starting to head in the lighter direction and the green-eyed girl was getting more comfortable again.
she tried to stay happy when the topic of her interview was brought up. but just the idea of it really set lauren off. her relationship with lucy had been ruined because of speculation and the terrible reactions of people. that, and lauren just didn’t feel the same about her anymore. mani was the one always there for her, shoulder to cry on, and laugh on. and ever since the end of that relationship with her ex, lauren promised herself that she was going to be open about every part of her life. “i don’t...i don’t know. i didn’t think you’d see me the same. or you’d be weirded out that i liked girls and you wouldn’t treat me the same anymore. you know i love when you flirt with me.” mani spoke the truth though, ever since coming out really to her friends she felt better in her own skin. having approval from her best friend is what really mattered in that moment. “i...trust you with everything mani, but you know it’s not..simple between us,” she said quietly, thinking back to close kisses and touches the two of them has shared together. “i just don’t know how to explain or even act on what i feel right now.”

normani seemed to have been smiling just a bit more lately. which it may have something to do with how much her and lauren had been texting and how they fell back into being as close as they had over the last few days. she tried not to think about putting any labels on whatever it was they actually were, instead just enjoying the time they spent together and talking. if anyone were to ask, she wouldn’t know what to say. even though though she couldn’t help wondering herself. it felt a little stronger than just a friendship but not exactly full on dating, more like some weirdly comfortable middle ground. mani grinned at her phone when she saw lauren’s message just as she was finishing applying just a bit of mascara and eyeliner. she’d decided to keep it casual with a comfortable pair of ripped jeans and a simple v-neck shirt, letting her natural curls fell down over her shoulders and back.
she tried to ignore the butterflies in her stomach that started when she drove the familiar route over to lauren’s. she’d made the trip enough times to know it in her sleep by now. she stood in front of the door, pausing for a moment to take a breath and gather herself. why was she suddenly so nervous, it just lauren after all. one of the few people she could talk to about anything and everything until the hours of the morning or laugh with till her stomach hurt and there were tears forming in her eyes. normani was just about to knock when the door flew open and her best friend bumped right into her. she reached her arms out with a surprised ‘woah’ leaving her lips. she laughed along as she embraced lauren. “yeah, i was just about to. nice timing…” mani followed inside toward the living room with a smile as she held onto lauren’s hand. “it’s not shit… a movie night sounds pretty great.” while she sometimes enjoyed finer things, mani was just as happy with simple and lowkey nights in. of course just the fact of her date for the night being lauren, she knew she would enjoy it no matter what they did. “so what do we got?” she pulled lauren over to the couch with her and sat down, starting to look through some of the movies.
in the past month or so, lauren knew that what she felt for her best friend was intensifying. not that it was a bad thing, but lauren didn’t want to be so selfish about it. they had tour coming next year, performances...so much time that was going to be consumed with everyone together. and a breakup could possibly ruin all of the good chemistry that was between them. pulling herself from her thoughts she was pulled down to the couch next to normani, a small grin on her face. “you’re cute,” she giggled out, sitting back and shrugging at the small pile of movies. “i mean, i was thinking we can scare the fuck out of each other and go with a scary movie. so there’s like 5 different ones to pick from. i kinda wanna watch insidious.”
the two of them bickered back and forth about movies, and finally the two of them decided on just watching insidious. “will you relax? i’m going to be sitting right next to you. no lights on though, that won’t be authentic for a scary movie.” getting up from the couch she put in the movie, grabbing the remote and shutting the rest of the lights off before returning to her seat next to mani. she grabbed the bowl of popcorn and curled herself close to her best friend, two of them quietly watching together. “you know, so many people are talking shit about that interview i did. what i said about..having a girlfriend and everything.” lauren played with a few pieces of popcorn, the idea of everything going wrong was in her head. “i wasn’t trying to get a lot of attention from that bullshit, but it was like...i felt forced to hide all of the time. even from you.”
