So, had to work yesterday and was reasonably okay for the day, didn’t have much of an appetite and was a little tired but nothing too strenuous. Five o clock rolls around and I start feeling distinctly crappy but that’s okay, I can hold on until the kids go home.
Six o clock comes and their mother arrives, we do the handover (Child A behaved very well today but child B was a little fractious etc) And I, responsibly inform the mum that I’m not feeling well and to watch the kids in case they come down with whatever I have.
She thanks me, pays me and goes on her way. I barely have the door closed behind her before I’m darting for the bathroom.....I shall spare you the details but suffice to say, I am NOT well.
Up into the night getting sick, then slept half the day away and at three this afternoon get a phone call from Child H’s mother. (I had child H with me on Thursday for afternoon/evening)
“Hi there, sorry to ring on a Sunday but H has a terrible stomach bug, it’s very bad, we were so busy we just brought him to the emergency room today and they've told us we’re obliged to inform you.”
She then went on to tell me that he was sick Thursday morning but seemed so much better by the time I got him in the afternoon that there didn’t seem any point in mentioning it.
I have been ill for 24 hours now, I still can’t keep food down and it’s difficult to stay hydrated.
Not only that but I have potentially infected three other children and am not eligible to mind the six month old I was booked for for the next two days.
I am pissed off about this. I mean, I get it. I frequently step in to look after children that have a fever or a bug and can’t be admitted to a day care but that is when I am aware. When I am informed.
There are precautions I can take, extra hand washing, less hugs, more disinfectant. Not that it always works but that’s not the point, there are other children in and out of my house, playing with the same toys, eating at the same table and I have a duty of care.
I am vigilant but when I am informed I can be doubly so. When I am not informed. I get ill, the children in my care get ill and I lose work.
TL:DR For god’s sake people inform your childcare worker if a child is ill.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
