My dear, how far do you go hunting monsters before you become one yourself?

Their was always an sense of discomfort when Andromeda moved in public. She was practiced in knowing when eyes were on her, and it seemed that always seemed to be at least one person marking where she was or who she talked to. Whether they looked upon her with curiosity or disgust, she never knew, though she assumed it was the latter. She had never understood how steadfastly people held onto their convictions, when really the lies they had been fed as children were nothing but smoke and mirrors.
And they were no longer children and yet the people around her continued to think as such, lashing out in temper tantrums that, when age and ability was taken into account, was not that dissimilar from the ones Nymphadora had thrown as a toddler.
Stupidly she allowed herself to get distracted by these thoughts, her body moving of it’s own accord into someone browsing in the same aisle as she. “I’m so sorry, clumsy me- not watching where I was going.” She knelt to the ground to pick up the book she had dropped in her momentary lapse, unable to see who exactly she had inconvenienced.
Running errands was not something Alice did often; after all, work seemed to consume her entirely. When she wasn’t chasing the bad guys, she was struggling to even offer a glance to the piles of messy paperwork in her office, and vice versa. The fact that there were actually people out there that enjoyed doing all that boring stuff was something she couldn’t quite wrap her head around, and and that was pretty much common knowledge. Still, as the diligent young worker that she was, although she struggled to stay attentive, her paperwork was usually done on time.
This week, though? Normally not the most active witch (in the sense of exercise), she was starting to entertain the idea of going on one of those muggle jogs she’d heard of so much, all in the name of clearing her head. All over her office at her were papers and papers and oh, more papers about her missions, particularly since her bosses were practically forcing her to describe every single step that she took to take down last week’s baddie-of-the-day. Some Aurors over at the Ministry liked to say that writing reports was like reliving the whole glorious moments, over and over again, but she’d rather be spending her time doing some proper research into other malignant witches and wizards instead of concentrating on old news. As it had to be, she had no such luck.
She took it upon herself to distract herself, even if momentarily. She made her way to the kitchen, ate the last of their lettuce and tomatoes, and then concluded that they had run out and were in dire need of those exact ingredients. These days, she fought hard to ignore the growing tiny person in her stomach, but her conscience told her eating healthier was not only the best thing to do, but a necessity. Whether she wanted this baby or not, she had to be more responsible. Maybe a walk would do them both good.
She wore the coziest coat she had, quickly tied up her curly mane into a ponytail, slapped on some quick makeup and hurried out of the little place she shared with Frank, the cold seeping into her bones at a rapid pace. The small store she had in mind was hidden somewhere in Diagon Alley, so instead of bracing the cold winds like she usually did, she quickly apparated herself to the front doors, and quickly hurried in. She had no idea why she was trying to pick up the pace, with her wanting to just waste time, so she leisurely grabbed a basket and walked down the aisle, keeping an eye on the fruits and veggies on her right. And, before she knew it, her shoulder bumped another customer’s, and quickly, she reached down to help what she noted was a woman. A familiar one...
“And—Andromeda! Hey!” Merlin, did she wish she didn’t sound so harried herself. Alice offered a kind smile to the woman and fixed her hand on the basket. “I haven’t seen you in a while.”
New Years was fun. Wasn’t New Years fun? Petre thought so, and he had been sure to tell everyone he saw that he thought so – at the top of his lungs, no less, shirt unbuttoned halfway and reeking of cheap booze. That was the state he found himself in well after midnight. Stumbling through the streets singing in Romanian, trying to either find his way home or find his way to the bottom of the bottle in his hand.
Not much of an enforcer to begin with (at least, not outside of work), seeing wizards and witches making fools of themselves during the holidays was the least surprising thing in the world. There were those poor, elderly squibs, discarded and uncared for, and then there were the youthful, albeit maybe off-their-kilter young adults that seemed to have an affinity for alcohol, particularly the intoxicating type. She herself wanted to go get some alcohol on her walk home, but before she could finish processing the thought, the sound of a foreign song infiltrated her ears and caught her attention almost immediately.
It was kind of distant, but with a couple of good, precise steps, she found her way towards the source of the singing: a (nearly) shirtless man that held a bottle in his hand and looked to be having a hard time finding his footing. It was a disheartened but amusing sight, and while Alice normally didn’t go out of her way to socialize with wizards and witches that tended to loiter the outdoors, she felt a sting of pity. He continued to stumble away from her, oblivious in his world, but she set down her bag by her feet and shrugged off her jacket, ignoring the cold that invaded her skin. Hell, it was a new year; her first good deed? She picked up her light tan trench coat and her bag as she hurried after him.
“Wait!” She shouted, trying to make her voice heard. Her heels hit the pavement steadily until she finally reached up to him, and before he could break his tune, she held out her coat, adding a smile for the hell of it. “Here. You look... um, cold.”
Mary had always believed that the best fix for a hangover, even the little ones that she would get occasionally, was more alcohol. Donning what could easily have been Sirius’s sweater- the laundry room in the flat was a bloody mess and she would often ‘accidentally’ steal an item of his that she found more pleasing than her own- she headed towards the tiny liquor store near the flat. Shivering from the slight chill in the air, she glanced back- ever paranoid- spotting someone that looked even worse than she felt. She nodded to them, trying and failing to look sympathetic to their own hangover.
Three weeks. Three long, arduous, hard-working weeks it had been since Alice’s lips last touched the delightfully bitter taste of alcohol, and boy, was she dying for at least a tiny sip tonight. No longer would she be returning home with just packets of paperwork huddled in her small hands, her hair beyond frizzed and her light clothes wrinkled and covered in floo powder; today was her day. She had gotten a ton of boring things out of the way before the clock had chimed 7, and by the time she had clocked out and was on her way back home, she managed to remember that Frank had an outing—he’d left the note behind the front door, which was the only reason why she saw it before she left (otherwise, she wouldn’t have noticed).
And what that meant was time for herself. Not that she didn’t enjoy Frank’s companionship, because she absolutely did, but having their humble place to herself meant that she could down an entire bottle of alcohol without worrying about Frank telling her to pace herself, or taking the bottle from her and hiding it. She was well aware that he had good intentions, and it was because of him that she managed to keep herself so grounded, but for Merlin’s sake, she wanted nothing more than to get so hammered that she wouldn’t even think twice before falling asleep. That’s what she was seeking for—relief.
Although the thought of finally getting a bottle was enticing all on its own, her morning sickness was most definitely not. Even as she walked through the London streets, she felt her stomach churn and the urge to vomit nearly overwhelming her for a second, stopping her in the middle of the sidewalk for just a moment. Closing her eyes, she sucked in a breath, blew it out, and continued her way to the closest liquor store, desperately hoping that she wouldn’t barf all over the counter or something equally ridiculous. The moral part of Alice told her it was probably a higher power telling her to head home instead of risking hurting the growing baby inside of her, but the rather desperate part of her seemed to overpower without a second thought. Alcohol is the only remedy for your nights, it seemed to repeat in her head. And, feeling rather meek, she believed it.
Close to the entrance of the small establishment, she caught sight of a small, slim figure that looked eerily similar. She didn’t think too much of it until the girl turned back, a glint of something in her eyes... not fear, but more like caution. The girl gave a good nod in Alice’s direction, and feeling now like she had most definitely seen the girl around somewhere, Alice hurried to open the door for her, fighting back the vomit that was practically begging to get out. A little awkwardly, she kept her silence for a minute as she tried to recompose herself, and finally, when she felt good enough, she spoke —
“Evening, miss. Have I seen you around before?”
