a piece of advice my dad gave me and I’ve never forgotten is, “if you won’t worry about it in 4 months, don’t worry about it now.” saved me countless times, it’s a philosophy to adopt and help improve your life. Failed a test? ask yourself if you’ll think about this still in 4 months? Made a fool of yourself in public? I doubt even the people who saw it will remember it past today. Know you could have done better? Ran further? don’t beat yourself up over it, you can do better tomorrow. Don’t overthink things, a lot of negatives matter less than you think they do.

☝🏼I’m trying to think who are Slavic people in American movies. I remember the  Russian (or Ukrainian) Mafia Members and Mafia Bosses, Russian Spies, Polish Construction Workers, assortment of Slavic Prostitutes and/or Human Trafficking Victims, a Slavic Mad Scientist/Genius who usually Tries To Do The Right Thing in the last moment, to no avail, usually inept and dumb Slavic Police, Slavic Aged Proud Ballerinas/Opera Singers with tragic past… am I missing someone? 

P.S. “Red Sparrow” was particularly infuriating. I hated that movie.

Also, whenever the setting of anything ever, at any given time, and in any given mainstream (or even non-mainstream) genre, franchise or storyline lends itself to Romania, it’s always, and I mean, almost always connected to vampires, Dracula - something supernatural, horror-y, macabre, otherworldly, demonic, spooky or gothic - where the locals are backwards, ignorant, under-educated, barbaric, positively medieval, fanatical, amazingly superstitious, living in a constant state of fear from some hellish, obscure entity or other and for the lack of a better word, written to be downright cookie-cutter and two-dimensional - it’s like an entire nation has been reduced to a mere Halloween amusement park cliche where the one and only thing of focus and notoriety is that of stereotypes over heaps of other stereotypes which should’ve been outdated a couple of centuries ago.

I’ve only seen Slovenia represented in two pieces of media and one was so god awful i forgot it and the other was a Louis C.K. show. People could at least put in the work. 

Also, i swear to god i get fed up to shit with how americans treat Melania. I mean ok, listen, i don’t like her either, but she speak 2 languages, a feat most americans cant accomplice.

Like, at least try to do a good one…

I also wish they’d stop casting the most basic of women without any contact with our world in slavic roles - it’s incredibly difficult for slavic (of course, not native english speaking) actors to get roles that aren’t “a slavic person”, and all of those are taken by Scarletts (surprise surprise) and Jennifers

God I think about the x-files episode on the “satanic romanian cukt” called “The Calusari” so often. The entire time I was watching that episode I wanted to fucking scream. Like no amount of research went into that at all. the calusari are a folkloric dance group??? also the romanian that was spoke, much like someone previously mentioned with other EE language, was so atrocious. But at least it was romanian. Often times, they give the character that’s supposedly romanian a russian/slavic name, and they also speak russian/other slavic language.

When I saw Croatia being mentioned in Bad Moms Christmas I was deeply shocked.

In Castle girl from Dubrovnik (like it’s only fucking city in Croatia what the actual fuck?) was shockingly well-educated (she went to college) came ilegally (surprise, right?) to USA and was killed because she had business with drugs (surprise ×2)

Stana Katić, an actress from Croatia (or Serbia idk anymore, I know she often comes to Croatia on holiday to visit cousins), plays leading role in Castle. I’m shook she even got a decent role, but I really think she should have said something when producers came with terrible idea about girl from Dubrovnik. Like, girl, you could have shouted at them. 🤷🏻‍♀

Rade Šerbedžija, an actor from Croatia, always plays Russian criminals and has terrible accent.

Tomasz Kot, the awesome polish actor who played in everyone’s favourite Cold War, was supposed to play russian antagonist in one of the Bond movies. Guess what? Daniel Craig said no because Kot was too tall and would make him look stupid :)

No one from the main cast of upcoming Witcher - Netflix series is Slavic and when people in Poland started to complain about it ( it’s a polish book series based on Slavic mythology!) all of the western media started to write that Poles are racist because we don’t want POC in the series when in fact no one cared about their skin colour 🤷🏻‍♀️ and none of them noticed that it’s them who are xenophobic and prejudice

And the other thing that I hate is when every Slav speaks Russian! Like I was watching “the spy who dumped me” the other day and opening scenes took place in Lithuania but according to official English subtitles the natives were speaking Russian and tv news were also in Russian. There is a whole ass language spoken by 4 mln people but who cares if they’re Slavic make them speak Russian! Plus Vilnius was portrayed like it was still Cold War with super old cars, dirty streets and poor alcoholics but that’s a thing for another story…

Western media needs to start doing minimal research on the slavic cultures they’re trying to portray and actually put some effort into it

There’s so many interesting things you could choose from and? You go with the most basic one? The overdone one? The not even remotely accurate one?

I can think of one (1) czech character I’ve seen on American TV and there’s a whole lot of issues with how she’s portrayed

Ok, I understand that portrayals of the Slavic people in Western media are lazy and problematic for all the reasons listed above, however, it kind of baffles me how we should be made to care so deeply about it. Western media is exactly that, Western. Let’s face it, most movies that come out of there are offensively mediocre. American cinema, especially temporary American cinema, should not be put on pedestal just because it makes so much money and gets masses to watch the crap they’re producing. We have our own film industries. We should try our best to support and sustain them, and then promote our films abroad. We should be the ones in charge of our representation.

Not to mention our own stereotypes towards other nations/ethnics in films and popculture. I dare to say we tend to get much more biased, even racist in our films.
