Rachel is the most beautifully written narrative ghost I’ve ever seen. 

Everything and everyone in Arcadia Bay is tied to her. From the junkyard filled with ghosts to the college campus plastered wall to wall with paper telling how deeply she’s missed. There’s no way to avoid the glimpses of her in Arcadia Bay.

We see her in Chloe’s room when we find the postcard from RA. We see her at the dinner when Nathan is startled by the mere sight of her clothes. We see her on the cliffs when the ghost of a deer shows Max what will lay ahead. And most of all, we see her in the people of the town when they tell stories of the life she lived, and we realize all Max will ever have are stories. Not memories.

Rachel is dead before the game even begins. Yet her influence on the world and narrative is more important than anyone. She is the foundation of Life Is Strange. A ghost that seems more alive than the living.

One of the criticisms about Chloe's character I disagree with most is that she was selfish the entire game until having a sudden change of heart on the cliff.

Chloe can be selfish. It's a character trait that comes out in some of the choices, like answering Kate's call or how she guilt trips Max if you don't agree with her. Yet, Chloe is nowhere near one of the most selfish characters in media.

Her main motivation through the entire game is finding Rachel. She puts herself in harms way time and time again to figure out if the girl she loves is okay. Even after it's reveled that Rachel was with Frank and it's put into question how well Chloe knew her, it doesn't slow down the search at all.

If she's not looking for Rachel she's spending time with Max pushing her to be a more confident version of herself. She's highly supportive of Max's artistic dreams and pushes her to find who she is.

With that in mind it's weird to me that Chloe is written off as entirely selfish. She can be at times, but at the end of the day she shows again and again how much she cares for people. She's always had it in her to sacrifice herself for the town, or at least Max and/or Rachel.

I don't even care if Chloe was supposed to die in the bathroom. The sheer cruelty that the universe inflicted on the girls if that is true is enough to make me sacrifice the bay.

First Max is given time travel to save Chloe. So why is it her fault the timeline got messed up? If Chloe was always supposed to die on Monday, then the gun shot should've been it. To give someone a power and then punish them for using it is cruel.

Then if Max decides to sacrifice Chloe the universe punishes them both by taking away all of Chloe's memories. Sure, Max has more to hang onto, but Chloe doesn't get a final comfort of knowing she's loved and dying for a cause. She dies hearing the words "No one will even miss your punk ass." and she has no idea how untrue that will be.

Since I first played Life Is Strange I've teetered on the idea that Chloe was supposed to die in the bathroom. But what I'm sure of is that I don't care. Even if was Chloe's destiny, what took place that week was so cruel they deserve to at least be together.

This commentary from Max is so interesting because she’s right in a way she isn’t even aware of.

If Max couldn’t control time, Kate wouldn’t have jumped. By sacrificing Chloe, you stop Kate from being pushed onto the roof as she’s still alive by Friday for the funeral. That means Max changed Kate’s destiny in the bathroom just as much as she did her best friends.  

It also means that Kate doesn’t have a single fate. She has three.

She can die on Tuesday by jumping off the roof. She can be saved on Tuesday and then witness or be killed in the storm. Or she can not go to the roof at all after Chloe is sacrificed. 

No matter what choice you make Max will never know the full extent of what she could have changed. If you sacrificed the bay Max will never know that Kate wouldn’t have gone to the roof.  If you sacrificed Chloe, Max will always replay that moment on the roof and wonder if it could have gone worse/better. 

Max has changed so much in a way she can’t even fully comprehend. Time travel powers really would be such a mindfuck.
