According to the Rijksmuseum, this is the only known portrait of a black man in early European painting:

He may have served at the Brussels court of Emperor Charles V, who had a black archer called Christophle le More among his bodyguards. The badge of the Virgin on his cap is a souvenir of a pilgrimage to Halle (Brabant), a favourite destination of pilgrims from the Brussels court.

On this day in 1968, US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists during the playing of the National Anthem after Smith received gold and Carlos bronze for the 200 meter run at the Olympic Games in Mexico City. The pair said the act was a protest of racial inequality back in the US.
