There are layers to this. Earlier in the episode, Xena discovers her secret while they're sharing a locker room. A woman she has got naked with turned out to be trans. It's the exact scenario terfs are always fear-mongering about, but Xena just shrugs it off.

Also, the kiss was a big deal not just because it was gay but because the trans actress was HIV positive. They wanted to show the world that you can't contract HIV just from kissing someone. Bear in mind, the AIDS crisis was still fresh on people's minds in the 90s.

said this on twitter but putting it here too! one thing about this season’s structure that i really like is how the flashbacks feel the way actual memories feel - not entirely accurate, focusing on very specific moments in your relationships, ones that may seem inconsequential but completely shaped who you are.

in the books, one of the vampiric powers is the ability to recall memories in extreme detail, and even though louis’ memories in the show are not objective either, they still have the astonishing and inhuman detail of the books. i do like that lestat’s are more akin to feelings: the oppressive feeling of the childhood dinner table, blacking out for the actual wolf attack due to PTSD but remembering his mother’s molestation afterwards, hearing nicki’s music for the first time, magnus holding him down. these memories are so visceral in their singularity
