This was a necessary part of the process for Nazis to take over Germany. The use of street gangs, self-appointed militias, violent thugs, mad-dog killers and lone-wolf gunmen to create fear among the general populace and to intimidate political opponents was an important part of their stretegy. And also like Trump, they made sure that they coddled and cultivated these criminals and developed their ties to them, but without ever admitting it out loud so their opponents did not call them out on it. Fascism thrives by bringing violence, thuggery and criminality to societies that are tolerant, complacent and open-minded enough to let them do it without putting up a fight.

This has a name! It’s called “stochastic terrorism”, it is when a leader or a person with power and influence says “wow [insert thing here] sure is a problem, I hope *somebody* does something about it!”

In the case of a political leader that person usually is the one who actually has the power to do something about it, but they don’t because they don’t want to be blamed for it. The point is for a person who follows them to look around, think “yeah that really is a problem that needs to be dealt with, and no one is dealing with it so I guess I should.”

It’s second-hand murder and everyone who does it, from hitler to trump to Ben Shapiro, knows exactly what they’re doing. Playing dumb is part of the strategy.
