also, little headcanon that ive yhought of after seeing this au. I think Mrs potts would be the type to shoo him out of the kitchen if she's baking or smth, cuz adam DEF sneaks tastes, and lumiere would be the type to let adam sneak a taste because Adam's gotten... V E R Y good at puppy dog eyes. like. so good it's. concerning 😭

It's one of my favourite parts of the movie to think about. The fact that he didn't grow up with his parents for the first years of his life so had to be raised by his own servants. To what degree did they still have to uphold their original duties while doing this? Was it their fault Adam had turned out the way he was? They weren't prepared to developmentally and emotionally raise a child! Were they partly to blame for the curse happening at all?

Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts being the few higher ranking servants meant that they were the most prominent in Adam's life.

Cogsworth: Tries to see Adam as royalty before anything else. Note that since this is set in the earlier days of his rule, in addition to the fact that Adam isn't a gigantic beast 20x his size- Cogsworth isn't as passive and anxious as you'd know him to be. Yes, he's very worried about the reputation of the castle knowing his Highness is an ANIMAL now, this just drives him to be hard-pressed on training Adam well to be fit for the throne early; before anything drastic happens with his transformation.

Therefore he is most strict with him- keeping him on top of his studies, training him consistently on his royal duties; not really focusing on letting him Be a Kid. As the Prince's second-in-command, he feels he holds the most responsibility to shape him up proper. However simultanenously he's aware that with his status he still technically must follow the Prince's orders, so Cogsworth likes to view himself as more of a guide. An educator. Not a bossy-boots at all.

He is also generally kind of awkward with kids I think and doesn't really know how to bond with him outside of royal business. Adam sees him as kind of annoying in general but loves to ask him all sorts of questions about anything (Cogsworth loves to flex his knowledge).

Lumiere: He rather prioritises Adam's social and physical development. Lumiere mainly teaches him about social skills including manners and how he outwardly presents himself appearance-wise. Overall developing his self-confidence. Lumiere teaches and accompanies him in many leisurely activities together, including music (sing and dance), horseback riding, etc etc.

He loves Adam a ton and almost sees him as a son; he spoils the young prince often with treats that he bakes, takes time out to play with him; just mostly spending time with him and wants to see him happy. Obviously he believes that Adam should learn some proper royal responsibilty, so he leaves that work to Cogsworth. Think of Cogsworth doing the theory bits and Lumiere doing the practical bits. Adam sees Lumiere as "the fun one".

Mrs. Potts: In her position you could say she's practically the most well-equipped with raising him. She is much more firm with Adam but not in a cold, dismissive way. Being a mother herself she obviously has plenty experience dealing with children (LOTS of them at a time) and so pretty much includes Adam as one of her own. Therefore she sees past his royal status at the moment and treats him as she would the rest of her kiddos.

Adam has the most trust with Mrs. Potts in terms of emotional comfort, and she prioritises keeping his attitude in check. Including instilling manners into him. She is also very much aware of Adam's animalisatic tendencies and so wants to ensure his emotional capacity pivots in the right direction - so Adam goes to her when he is nervous or upset about something because Mrs. Potts always has the right words to say.

So not only is it a scene that hits straight to the heart, but I love the detail within it/intentionality… the script reveals a little more here. I love the idea of Lumière having joint pain! It shows that even the less extreme visual signs/ physical jolt from a petal dropping there’s further to it to the curse progressing than directly scene.

If Lumière has joint pain… one can only imagine, like in the musical Mrs. Potts describes stiffness etc. it’s interesting and tragic idk

Obsessed with the way this whole scene is written, but also confirmation of the prince being a teen/close to young adult when he was turned. We see that portrait slashed in the opening but not again in this version. Better than eleven at least…

I also cannot get over Belle making the connection and identifying him as the prince etc. like she’s a smart person, she puts together a lot more than given credit for. And I’m curious how much she pieced together— as she did identify enchantment well before anyone spoke of it etc. Does she fully think Prince = beast or understand that it at least used to belong to a Prince?

(Which by the way, is beautiful), and together we decided to make the Cogsworth of my horror au: Who killed the master? And her to met! ...As you can see Charlotte has...mmmm, a very peculiar personality! 😅 (And it also has a dark background story...🤨)

Lumiere’s legs ache, but it’s a fantastic ache—the ache of being out in summer, hiking through the woods, air on his face when for just a second there he thought he’d never have a face again. He breathes, deeply, almost too deeply—and oh, his muscles hurt.

“You might have thought not to wear heels,” teases Plumette, gently, just behind him.

“Cherie, you yourself are wearing heels,” says Lumiere. She laughs and raises her skirts so he can see them. Truly scandalous! And oh so pretty. Their laughter can be heard through the forest as he chases her off the path.

Behind them by a few yards, Cogsworth sighs and raises his eyes to the heavens. Lovers in summer, eh? He cannot remember ever having been this way himself: annoying, grasping for physical attention, all flirt and kiss and nonsense, utter nonsense. He groans and puffs and leans against a tree.

“They all do it, Mr. Cogsworth,” says Mrs. Potts, walking just behind him. “Let them have their fun. Summer was made for lovers such as them.”

“And normal people such as us?” says Cogsworth. “What of us? You have Mr. Potts, I have…..hmph, I have Clothilde. Summer should belong to us, too.”

Mrs. Potts smiles. Far down the path—lagging far behind the older members of the party—Cadenza and Garderobe cling to each other, arm in arm, taking their time and hiking only in between the kisses and hugs. Cogsworth groans again and keeps on walking.

“Mon ami! Cogsworth! Down here!”

The party follow the sound of Lumiere’s voice, off the beaten trail and down into a hollow. Cogsworth waves as he sees his friend and Plumette practically dancing in front of a fallen tree.

“Don’t you see?” yells Plumette. “It’s a tree-house! Someone has made a home beneath the tree!”

It’s true: the upturned roots of the tree form the roof of a home, a charming one strewed with blankets and baskets of herbs. Just outside the shelter stands a cauldron, bubbling over flame; this last intrigues Lumiere very much, who stands over it with a spoon.

“You must come try this at once,” he insists. “Marjoram! I haven’t tasted it in years. Ooh, and something else as well—” He sips from the cauldron and concentrates. Plumette, beside him, laughs and eats as well.

“Lumiere! We are trespassing, we cannot just help ourselves to someone’s dinner—”

“Relax, mon ami,” and Lumiere cuts Cogsworth off by forcing a spoonful to his lips. “When our enchanting host returns, we will share our picnic with him. The master will be along with it shortly, no? Cadenza—you are a man of taste—taste marjoram and see what you think.”

While the musicians smile and sup, Mrs. Potts feels an ache deep within her. This is no muscle spasm—though she certainly had enough of those while hiking this deep into the woods—no, this is unease. She looks into the hovel of the tree, and sees roses pinned against the roots, and an owl perched upon a chair; magic, she thinks, magic, and her stomach turns over.
