Terry Pratchett started his career as a crypto-monarchist and ended up the most consistently humane writer of his generation. Ā He never entirely lost his affection for benevolent dictatorship, and made a few classic colonial missteps along the way, but in the end youād be hard pressed to find a more staunchly feminist, anti-racist, anti-classist, unsentimental and clear-sighted writer of Old White British Fantasy. Ā
The thing I love about Terryās writing is that he loved - loved - civil society. Ā He loved the correct functioning of the social contract. Ā He loved technology, loved innovation, but also loved nature and the ways of living that work with and through it. Ā He lovedĀ Britain, but hated empire (seeĀ āJingoā) - he was a ruralist who hated provincialism, a capitalist who hated wealth, an urbanist who reveled in stories of pollution, crime and decay. Ā He was above all a man who loved systems, of nature, of thought, of tradition and of culture. Ā He believed in the best of humanity and knew that we could be even better if we just thoughtĀ a little more.
As a writer: how skillful, how prolific, how consistent. Ā The yearly event of a new Discworld book has been a part of my life for more than two decades, and in that barrage of material there have been so few disappointments, so many surprises⦠to come out with a book as fresh and inspired asĀ āMonstrous Regimentā as the 31st novelĀ in your big fantasy series? Ā Ludicrous. Ā He was just full of treasure. Ā What a thing to have had, what a thing to have lost.
In the end, he set a higher standard, as a writer and as a person. Ā He got better as he learned, and he kept learning, and there was noĀ ātoo lateā orĀ ātoo hardā orĀ āI canāt be bothered to do the research.ā Ā He just did the work. Ā I think in his memory the best thing we can do is to roll up our sleeves and do the same.
This post seems to be making the rounds again so here it is on the word blog

since i have only listened to the monstrous regiment book and not actually read it, discovering wazzer was called āwazzerā and not āwozzerā kind of blew my mind. very excited to find out what other characters/places etc i donāt actually know the name ofš¤¦āāļø. iām telling this story since i donāt have the actual words to describe how immensely this book affected me but who does really. iām almost too scared to attempt the characters properly because i revere them so much (that might not be the right word but iām too tired to look it up). all i know is maladict with 90s boyband curtains is definitely not staying but it was fun for just nowš
YOUR DISCWORLD ART IS AMAZING TIFFANY KILLED ME
hahaha thanks so much!! yeah it seems to be making people emotional, maybe because i was a bit emotional when drawing herš. iām hoping to start drawing full finished discworld illustrations soon, so far iāve mostly been just sketching so thank you so much for the encouragement it really means a lot!!
a bunch of Tiffanys. Tiffanies? Anyway my partner and I just finished listening to I shall wear midnight so you all know what that means.... shepherds crown is nextš©. Iāve still not listened to raising steam so Iām going to make sure I listen to that myself first so that when I listen to my final final final discworld book I have my girlfriend there for emotional support š. Might seem like overkill but Iāve planned it this way ever since I started rereading the series a few years ago and got her to start listening to some of them together too. I just know Iām going to be super emotional so this is the best way!
I hope this isnāt too much information but our discworld audiobook time has been priceless during 2020. Every Friday we run a bubble bath, pour some prosecco or gin, leave our phones in another room and just soak and listen to the books. It means we have been getting through the Tiffany books at about 40 mins a week so a bit of a snails pace, but itās honestly the only time of the week I feel completely relaxed, and with not going out and working from home itās given the week some structure. Highly recommend weekly bath night or at least weekly ālock the phone away and listen to something nice for an hourā, weāll sometimes listen to a musical album instead. Really helps with the olā mental health.

For a long time I didnāt know whether to watch The Watch or not, well, now I have my answer š .
Finding this page from the Terry Pratchett Hisworld book makes the watch tv series situation that more upsetting. I canāt imagine how hurt Rhianna and the rest of the āOrder of the Honeybeeā is feeling right now.
Magrat Garlick sketch. I remember I related to Magrat most out of any discworld character back when I first read the books when I was younger. Her storyline of not really knowing who she is or what she actually wants in life, thinking sheās failing at everything, trying loads of different hobbies/approaches to witchcraft and none of them fitting, man it just hits different when youāre a skinny wee teenage girl! (The description of her body being like two peas on an ironing board stayed in my brain forever because it was so accurate to me tooš) I think thatās why Lords and Ladies holds such a special place in my heart, when Magrat finally takes a bit of control in her life. Itās so nice to reread the books as an adult and recognise what i loved about Magrat whilst not personally relating to her at all anymore. I know itās said all the time but TP really got people man.
couldnāt decide how cheery littlebottom would wear her beard š. either way sheād have it styled and pretty, but also functional for working with dangerous chemicals?
sally von humpeding. back when I was a wee baby gay reading thud for the first time I had SUCH a soft spot for sally! rereading as adult sheās still such a fun character to add to the mix of the watch. always wished weād had time to see a bit more of her.

sooo after about 3 years of not posting art on here I think itās time I start again! Iāve dove head first back into one of my first fandom loves - discworld! and I think tumblr is the best home for all my conceptual scribbles, so this is just a bit of a warning for those following me of what content to expect for the foreseeable future (though Iām sure fantasy gays will still be dotted around). if thatās not your bag thatās totally understandable, and if it is well enjoy the next wee while of me slowly uploading the last few months worth of discworld fan art! hereās a sketch dump from across a handful of the books to get us started.

I threw the design of my personal favourite couple (and everyone else's according to the notes) up on redbubble back in the day, lord knows how many years ago now. It's still there and if you ever wanted to support me or my work by all means have a look at what else you can have the design on! The sticker option is by far the most popular. Sharing this is also so much appreciated, thank you!
Your āmy love and I meet under the skyā poem is so beautiful and it makes me feel a lot of emotions, and your art is also incredible. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us!
Thank you that's so kind! I'm really glad it seems to be making people emotional haha!
hi! you are my favorite artist and i just really really love your style!!!!! is it okay if i redrew your wlw comic? thanks so much!
Hi thanks so much for the kind words! I'd appreciate it if you did not redraw my comic though, it is my own project that I would like to have the option to develop at some point. Thank you very much for the sentiment though.
