The repeated use of the specific word imperialism in fandom discussions of TotK really bugs me because like… we know what imperialism looks like, right?
Genocide either by murder or assimilation, leadership that is either of the conquering race or loyal to it generally for personal gain, control of the conquered’s resources, and a social climate where the conquerors are considered superior.
But in this Hyrule none of the other races had their cultures erased, they aren’t governed by Hylian leaders and the local leaders’ first priority is taking care of their people, they manage their own trade affairs, and Hylians don’t constantly subject others to put downs about their race.
If a Hylian man dares enter Gerudo Town without the Chief’s permission, they kick him out or put him in jail. That’s how much control the Gerudo have over their own territory and how little being a Hylian matters if you mess with them.
Rauru is accused of hoarding power but he literally gave his secret stones out to the other races and they remain in possession of them to this day.
Basically the only time the other nations seem to actually follow Hyrule’s lead at all is when facing common threats or working towards common goals. Hyrule only ever meddles in other lands affairs either to lend them aid (Link and Zelda fighting for everyone, the folks at Tabantha Bridge Stable providing disaster releif to the Rito, etc.) or requesting aid from them (Rauru and Zelda asking the Sages and Champions to help them fight Ganon[dorf].) They lead like a team leader leads. They founded an alliance.
I know I’m beating a dead horse here but to my eyes at least (for now) there is zero solid evidence of Hyrule exerting control over the daily lives of non-Hylians or stealing their resources, two major defining traits of imperialistic rule.
The only empire in the game would have been the one Ganondorf was trying to force on everyone and that was pretty bluntly depicted as being a bad thing. How can we say it’s pro-imperialistic if the main conflict is preventing the rise of an evil empire?
You can’t effectively analyze a narrative by completely ignoring everything about it and its meta that contradicts a knee-jerk viewpoint. What is even the point of analyzing it at all at that point?
We actually have no idea what the religious cultures of these other peoples were before the hylians came about. All of them have a statue of hylia, who in one we hear is no longer really revered in botw and yet in totk they've brought her below ground to safety. Meanwhile their own history is buried from them and known by none. If it's not assimilation, what is that? Why do they all worship the same goddess? Oh there's just one goddess and it's the proper religion and everyone just believes it? Unlikely. Rauru gave his secret stones to the others under his rule with the expectation that they will kneel for him and fight for him that's the scene. He's shown to have issues with rage, not trying to evacuate his terminally injured wife and instead nearly starting a whole fight and needing a time interloper to remind him his wife needs him. Is she dead then? Zelda sure doesn't think so. And once Rauru is incapacitated Zelda goes to every sage to demand that they swear the allegiance of their unknown descendants to a future that she's assured will come to pass -- but --- will it? What do they have to believe that anyway? Her word? And they just enlist their descendants expecting that the future will just be what the same as the present?
Why are all the other peoples of the past so entirely depersonalized not only do they have no faces, they have no names. And are the only representations of their peoples and cultures from the past. And Zelda, our POV character and view into this time period just never tries to learn their names? Doesn't think that's important? And then when we "see" them in the spirit realm or whatever they still have their masks on?? What do we have to know they weren't conquered and assimilated? A few memories from a traumatized young adult with her own parental issues who, very likely and very obviously in the scenes we see, became imprinted on her ancestors who were kind to her? of course they were, if they believe her or not she's presenting herself as a royal of some calibre or another and as royals it is in their interest to maintain a positive relationship. Ganondorf isn't good and i'm not arguing in favour of the completely flat villain. However, we also know literally nothing about the Gerudo of the past. Why is the unnamed Gerudo sage even on Rauru's side? Why have the Gerudo towns fallen? What does Ganon even want? Why is he a Hero and a King and if he is, what is he doing to his own people that they have fallen? Why hasn't there been any aid given to them? Why don't we see anything about that? This is the same kingdom that does eventually commit a genocide against the Sheikah creating the Yiga schism. While we don't know enough at all to say if the remaining zonai conquered the surface to create the kingdom, we also don't know enough to say they didn't. And we definitely don't know enough to say there wasn't assimilation, because to my eye there absolutely was. Perhaps they aren't an empire (yet), but they sure aren't just nice people either.
I don't think blindly calling them imperialistic does anything either, the issue is trying to analyze a narrative that just -- really wasn't written with nuance that we're trying to see within it, and that glosses over very obvious issues in order to idk, make the story shorter? Make it fit in gameplay? I have no idea. But I can say that the depersonalization of the sages is a ridiculous thing in my mind. Why have them at all at that point?
Hylia is a tangibly undeniably real entity in this fictional world and is specifically the protector goddess of everyone, and that is why they all pray to her. Other goddesses were mentioned in other games, but Hylia has been the main patron goddess of all the peoples of Hyrule since like Skyward Sword I think when she literally physically interacted with them.
No one knows a lot about the ancient past in this world, not even Hylians. Hylians didn’t even know about the mummy under their castle. Millenia passed and details slipped through the cracks and history fell into legend. It happens. The only confirmed account of history being erased I can think of was the Gerudo erasing the Eight “Heroine.”
Rauru is literally dead. He sacrificed himself. Was he expecting everyone to kneel to his corpse? Would you hand out magical nukes to people you were trying to keep under your absolute control? Rauru shared power and sacrificed himself for others, Ganondorf seized power and sacrificed others for himself. They’re both kings but one is the epitome of a good leader and the other is the epitome of a bad leader.
Zelda was tending to Sonia. Ganondorf was still a threat. A man betrays, mortally wounds, and robs a woman but then it’s her her husband who gets judged for being pissed off about it? C’mon now… That’s just rude lmao
Zelda is literally from the future and literally watched Ganondorf break free. She was 100% right when she warned Rauru Ganondorf wasn’t trustworthy. The sages fought alongside her in battle. Why wouldn’t they trust her? Rauru and Zelda urged (not commanded) their allies (not servants) to help them face a common foe and even made them better equipped to do so. No one is forcing this fight on any of the sages, past or present, except for Ganondorf. They need to fight because if they don’t everyone will die or be subjugated.
In a meta sense, the ancient sages were mostly likely downplayed so the present ones can shine (the Descendants were more than a bit overshadowed by the Champions in BotW, were they not?) The masks are the blue Champion cloths of this game. It’s cool armor that makes them look like a team and gives them an air of ancient mystery by covering their faces. Keeping details on them minimal was likely a choice based in narrative efficiency. We focus on them less so we can focus on the current sages more. Maybe some DLC or perhaps another Hyrule Warriors game will expand on the past?
What evidence is there that they were conquered and assimilated? What evidence is there that Zelda’s memories are false? What evidence is there that Sonia and Rauru’s love for her wasn’t genuine? Information should lead to a conclusion, not the other way around.
Not every villain needs to be sympathetic or complex to be compelling or enjoyable. Ganondorf embodies power in all its incredible, terrible forms and that’s neat. He’s fun because he’s big and imposing and evil and you need to stop him but it seems almost impossible because he’s just so damn strong and crafty and that’s cool! When you finally beat him it feels AMAZING because he IS power incarnate but you and your friends still managed to take him down and save the day! It’s not Game of Thrones and it doesn’t need to be. It’s a video game for Everyone Ten and Up, it’s okay for there to be clear cut bad guys and good guys! I mean do you guys really want a ten year old to have a moral crisis over beating up a bokoblin? lol
But hey if you want at least a little bit of nuance? Look at how this whole situation affects the rest of the Gerudo. They were Ganondorf’s first victims. He’s a danger to them still, and a national embarrassment they want to personally stop. Why is it so hard to imagine the Gerudo rebelling against Ganondorf after he swarmed the world with monsters? Why is it so hard to imagine him punishing them for their defiance and reconquering them? They were allied with the rest, why assume no one aided them just because they lost? Ganondorf is strong!
Yes! The Shiekah were unfairly persecuted at one point (forced to ditch their tech and exiled I think, idk abt genocide specifically) and that was a bad thing with negative consequences to this day. The existence of the Yiga in the lore indicates not everyone in the royal family is being depicted as inhumanly perfect which implies that we can take who the story tells us is good and bad at face value, doesn’t it? If the royals or the kingdom were being put on a pedestal, why admit that time they did the Shiekah so dirty?
Gerudo defected to Rauru, and Shiekah defected to Ganon. And now, ironically, Yiga butt heads with Gerudo most of all. I’m realizing this as I type it... That kind of stuff is interesting to me. That’s nuance. But not every story needs nuance! A simple meal well made is still good!
In summation: This story is fiction. If the storytellers didn’t tell you it happened directly or with hints, you should just assume it didn’t happen. Filling in reasonable blanks using what is there is one thing, but creating alternate universes where the good guys are bad guys is fan fiction. That can be fun! But with all due respect, it’s not narrative analysis. It’s like you’re ignoring the story you were told and creating your own only to get mad at the story you created?
