Let’s talk about Kyo and Momiji for a sec
I cannot stop thinking about that scene where Momiji comes into Kyo’s room, at first glance, to tell him to come for dinner, but really to have a deeper conversation than that.
To someone who doesn’t know Momiji, this scene would appear like Momiji was only taunting Kyo a bit with the way he was talking about Tohru. Here, Momiji says that Kyo had better man up and do something quick, or he could end up in a future where he loses Tohru to Momiji.
But let’s think about this statement for a sec.
Momiji does love Tohru. I will not discount that. He has crushed on her for awhile, but he’s well aware that they won’t be a thing, though it could very possibly happen if Kyo became confined, Momiji isn’t saying this for his own benefit.
If he was, it would mean he was also competing for her in a way. It would mean his love for her ran deeper than his cares about Kyo.
But I believe Momiji never truly viewed Kyo as the gift of a monster to hate as the rest of the Zodiac saw him, no matter what his instincts told him. I believe that Momiji loves Kyo more than any other Zodiac member does. Kyo is the sibling he always wanted. Someone who interacted with him instead of neglecting him. Someone he could bicker with, someone who was there, and that was enough.
Momiji doesn’t say these things because of his love for Tohru. He says them because of his love for Kyo, which runs even deeper. If he doesn’t warn Kyo of the future they might encounter, Momiji knows Kyo might give up. And that future wouldn’t only be awful for Tohru, it would be devastating for Kyo, and Momiji can’t have that either. He isn’t teasing him here, nor warning him of what he wants to happen—No, Momiji is desperately trying to bring Kyo out of his despair to get him to ACT. To try and spur him to do whatever it takes to break the curse, to get out of confinement, even if it comes as the cost of a future with one thing that Momiji might want.
And that’s truly what love is. Something self-sacrificing.
